    I can't believe no one has suggested those machine guns were used to discourage enemies from climbing the tank. Many Soviet tanks used to have a machine gun on the back of their turrets for this reason.

      Or for suppressing fire on fortifications if minimal infantry support

    It must had been funny if they tried to use all 4 external machine guns at the same time. The driver would be rocking the tank back and forth trying to spray rounds in as well as suddenly breaking and accelerating trying to get the elevation correct, while the gunner and commanders try to move the turret arguing about where the shots are going as they try to look though the periscopes while the tank is bouncing around, haha.

      Maybe to protect the rear of the tank from enemy infantry trying to take pot shots at the back of the tank. I'm willing to bet a Molotov Cocktail thrown at the rear engine bay would easily disable this tank. So I'm betting they put the machine guns to protect the tank from that.

    The machine guns was only used to keep enemy soldiers away from the tank, a common practice by soldiers from any army was to throw grenades or explosives into a hatch to kill the crew or fire RPGs at it since the tank cannot engage any threat that was close to it with its main gun.

    • @Legitpenguins99
      @Legitpenguins99 4 роки тому +11

      The Soviets actually had dedicated anti tank units that specialized in a close combat anti tank role. They mostly used standard or available infantry equipment to show the infantry they could fight back (or propaganda units if you want to look at it that way, they were never that effective compared to more conventional anti tank guns)

  • @statefarm8385
    @statefarm8385 3 роки тому +8

    Fun fact the reason the is7 wasn’t really produced was because it weighed 65 tons and back then they had a weight limit for a tank and the is7 passed that limit by almost 10 tons

    • @giovannifoulmouth7205
      @giovannifoulmouth7205 Рік тому +3

      Yeah it was the weight limit on Soviet railways, they transport tanks from factories on trains bc they can't drive them for thousands of kms to where they're needed.

  • @Mattebubben
    @Mattebubben 9 років тому +7

    The Rear mounted guns on the turret could probably be used to prevent enemy infantry from getting up on the rear of the tank.
    Since turning the turret and Shooting them would be an easy way to clearing any infantry trying to climb ontop of the tank.

    I suspect the designing went like this: after research, the team presented Stalin with a supremely effective tank-killer, capable of defeating any tank on the planet. He- a novice with overwhelming power- asked why a tank-killer had no machineguns.
    The designers then looked at each other...
    "Okay... You're the Boss..."

    The back machine guns were a attempt to keep tank killing infantry squads from climbing on the tank from behind and destroying it. The kv1 also had a machine gun in the back of the turret I believe.
    The Japanese equipped some of their tanks with back firing machine guns too. Seriously you were not aware of this chief ? The German Porsche Elephant is a good example of what happens when you have no secondary armament. It was hunted like a dog by Russian infantry when the Germans attempted to use it as a primary break through tank at Kursk. Were all these machine guns needed on this tank? Certainly not but more is better then none or just one in the turret. There were many instances of german tank drivers having to "hose down" the back sides of their own lead panzers with their front machine guns. Even HE was used fired on the back of their own tanks when they ran out of MG/a to drive off Russian tank hunter squads jumping on the back of lead element armor. I imagine this was a real worry to the designers that's why all the machine guns. Oh and one more thing. The did a pretty wise thing IMO about NOT cutting into the front plate of this tank for a machine gun port that would certainly weaken it's armor. It would have been better to fix a remote machine gun for the driver IMO.

    Chief I think that those fixed machine gun positions were basically defensive measures. If you notice the forward, fixed position MGs are located towards the rear, so as to cover the entire side length of the tank against Infantry.. who are trying to possibly climb up onto the tank or place explosives on it etc. I do not believe that they were intended for medium or long range usage.

    8:35 THIS gun only to (in the museum) show, however orginally it can be lowered and can be controlled without going to top of the tank, however the is-7 nearly unfinished or had break down issues.

    Why is the barrel lifted? Is it to stop people from walking into it? What about during a parade? For driver?

    • @chimpo34
      @chimpo34 9 років тому +19

      the barrel is lifted because if the tank were to go down a steep slope the gun wouldnt dig into the ground infront of it, not sure why lifted when stationary tho, probs to stop people from smacking their heads as u mentioned

      ***** Everything those person said is true, but there is also an another reason, well I think.
      It's like a infantry soldier pointing the gun on the ground, it tell that it won't fire, well it might fire but it's like a " safe ". In war tank always carry a shell inside the gun, just in case, so they lift the gun to make sure it if they do something wrong the shell will just fly in the air and land somewhere else... which in that case you don't mention it and hope nothing bad happenned the other side uhuh.
      So I supose even if there isn't any ammunition in it, they still keep the gun lifted just to say " hey it won't fire at you, it's in rest "

    • @unclebillybob1359
      @unclebillybob1359 6 років тому +1

      Real answer, the barrels were lifted so storage would be easier, lifting it up would allow the tanks in front to move closer together, thus allowing for more space for more tanks.

    I got the idea of the driver operated mg's to be used , when enemy is trying to run up to the tank and throw molotov cocktail or some magnetic shaped charge etc. on the tank.. the driver could fire all mg's at once, while turning the tanks on spot as fast as it can rotate 360's .. it would spit out on 4 mg's + if gunner decides to use his aswell. ..
    One could think that the opposing force would hit the dirt and try to hunker for cover instead of running on tank to plant their explosives etc..
    At least i would stop on my tracks and think something else or try later again.

      omri arielly You would see additional MGs on almost anything the Israelis had for many decades. Even a .50 cal coax mounted externally on an M109 SPG. And the M5 half-track was a case of "Give everyone a .50 cal or a .30 cal"
