I like that story about you catching your mother’s hands, making it clear she’s not going to do that to you anymore. My Great Grandfather, who just died at 96 in 2020, had a similar encounter with his mother, when she tried to get up and smack him one day he grabbed ahold of her and said “Not anymore, I’m done”, or something along those lines, and shortly joined the army and got away from her. He was about 16-17.

Her passing really does not bother me, both because of my personal issues with her, and the fact that she had really been gone for about 6 years her body just kept going. What I care about is the rest of the family who have good memories about her, and how they feel. Thank you for sharing, and remining me there is always some one going through the same thing as you.

My mother told me once that at certain times she was afraid that I would have hit her. This thought of course worried her as she was sure I probably could have done some damage. I'm guessing these thoughts came during any one of her yelling fits at me. That took me by surprise as that thought never EVER, not even once crossed my mind. No, she wasn't abusive. But she was a single mother and I often had to be the man of the house and sit there and listen to her frustration/venting. Yeah, not fair for the kid but that's life. Yeah there were times that it was over the top but to be fair I'm sure I was way over the top at times too. I was pretty rotten sometimes.

And if his bullet had come down and hit and killed a child? It's basic gun safety and proper usage. Every time you pull the trigger you have to be prepared for someone to die, with an exception for ranges where people still can die but they are set up such that the risk is reduced as much as possible. Which is why it's important to aim at your intended target otherwise you could end up killing anyone. Firing into the air is extremely careless. He acknowledged that it was a dumb thing to do and he's right to acknowledge it. I'm glad he is not going to prison or anything for it though, ultimately no one was hurt and so severe punishment makes little sense, he has learned his lesson it seems.

  • @mongrel_97

i relate to this. i grew up in the netherlands (not native dutch, family moved there) and i grew up in a small, small town. very close minded. i was an outsider all my life there, and i'm a white guy. if you weren't bred, born, and raised there, then fck you, you're not one of us. i remember a black family moving in. they lasted like a month before moving because of how hassled they were. my family is white, blue eyed and even we were bullied because we simply were not one of them. naturally, becoming a teen and wanting to fit in, i started acting like one of the boys. maybe i'd fit in more? nah... saying racist bullshit, joining in with the thugs who'd bully people just because they weren't "one of us, from here". i realise how wrong that is now, but i said and did some horrid stuff back then.
that being said, don't get me wrong. the dutch are great people, and typically have very liberal views. it's just this one town i grew up in full of racists and close minded people. the rest of the country is full of great people. so, no hate to the netherlands. just this one town i grew up in.

    • @mongrel_97
      @mongrel_97 2 роки тому

also, just to re-iterate how the common dutch person is actually super nice: for example we'd visit a town not even a few kilometers away from where we lived, and we'd mention we're from (this town) and they would go "ohh wow (that town)??? that place is very rough / full of racists!!" if we had initially moved to a town literally a few kilometers away our lives would have been so much better.

true empathy is being able to accept a family member as a product of their environment and time, admonish them for what you don't agree with, and love them for whatever positivity they may have brought to your life. It ain't easy to do, but it's the key to evolving ourselves and fortifying our own beliefs. After all, I'm sure we all have beliefs that the next generation sees as shocking or reprehensible-and we probably don't even know what those particular beliefs are yet.

Honestly, I know that the stories are kinda rough, but 10:58 "Let me get my things." "No, don't you worry. We have plenty of things back at home, just get in the car." Is such a raw line honestly. I'm not trying to glorify a mans wrongdoings, but man were the men just built different back in the day. They had their massive flaws but also equally massive strengths. My grandfather was similar, hardened especially by the Vietnam war. But under all his callousness and unwavering opinions you had a strong and good man. He had his racist moments that made me uncomfortable, but I think it's important to take in stride the good and bad, especially with older folks who had those ideas so strongly ingrained into their psyche that they know no other way of being right. Take what you can from the old timers and learn from their example, whether its a good or bad one.

As far as I know, there aren't any racists in my family, but when my cousin came out as a lesbian, we found out there were a few homophobes, including her own dad. He basically disowned her and wouldn't talk to her for years. Eventually, he came around and embraced her and who she was, but by then, the damage was done. It did a lot of emotional damage and made her a pretty bitter person for a while. I'm just glad they talk again. He's getting up there in age and it would be sad if they never got the chance to reconcile.

My grandfather was problematic. People might even call him a "nasty" by today's political standards.
But he spent 6 years fighting the real "nastys", and lost many friends and family over those years as well as a part of his humanity. Taken from him by the unrelenting violence and fear of death over such a long period. The stresses that brings.
He was 15 when he signed up (2 months under age). He fought his first battle (he was in the Navy) when he was 17. In which he saw many of the friends he'd made in the previous 18 months dismembered, drowned and burnt to death.
So when I consider judging him based on his beliefs. I always balance that with his sacrifices, and more importantly his experience of fighting a real war against really dangerous ideologues.
And consider, maybe I don't have all the answers. And the young people of today, with their coddled privileged lives. Where danger is hearing a lecturer in a say a word they don't like... How pathetic they are. And how if the world is ever put in danger again, as appears to be increasingly likely. How unprepared for real hardship the young of today are.

If I ever snatched my moms hands because I didn’t want her hitting me anymore, I would tell her “I’m not going to let you go unless you promise to behave yourself.” Saying “you’re not gonna hit me anymore.” Is bit too nice and not shifting the fear onto her. Also when she tattled onto Boogie for she claimed “hitting her,” like a toddler would. That just unimpressed me. 😑

My father was the devil. He wasn’t around much but when he was, he was extremely abusive and frightening. But my mother was loving and nurturing. But worked two jobs. Boogie I couldn’t imagine, as a male, to have an abusive mother. My heart goes to you, it really does. Only people with empathetic intelligence, like you and I, can understand. I’m sure your abuse started at a young age, forcing you to constantly read your mothers body language, trying to figure out if she’s mad or happy. The thing is, kids aren’t supposed to read body languages, to determine how a person is feeling. But now as adults, we can put ourselves in other peoples shoes and we are a great judge of character. If we are at a party, we can sniff out danger like a bloodhound lol. Unfortunately we have been our worst enemy since birth. Self hate, using food as a reward. Addiction, suicidal thoughts, insomnia, difficult relationships, anger, depression, loneliness. No more bad days for us pal. I’m sure you still struggle from what happened, but Atleast we have all this technology to keep us entertained. As for me, the weed keeps getting better. Much love my dude and good luck with all your endeavors. Many blessings to this channel.

Even the few racist people in my family would never threaten or desire to hurt someone for being a different colour. They are just as courteous and kind to everyone, in spite of their ignorance. And my grandparents weren't racist. We had an aunt and uncle who were very racist, but the whole family disowned them when they found out, and that was when I was a child.
