This is a simplified explanation. Depending on the lens you use, a single shoe box may not be long enough and you may have to join two length ways. Also, paints the whole inside of the box matte black to reduce light reflection in the box and therefore sharpen the image.
In the case of having a 60mm lens, how long do you think the shoebox needs to be? Wouldn't the projection be more dimmed considering that the distance of the phone is very far from the lens itself? I'm really interested in making this DIY better. Hoping for a reply, cheers.
For everyone who wants to improve the brightness of your image, try and hang plain white bedsheets on your wall. This will make your image way brighter
TRY THIS BEFORE GIVING UP!! For me, at first everything was a white blob, but then I just cut the back of the shoe box then extended it to give the slider more room to back up by glueing more cardboard. So, just keep adjusting back and forth for the box and for the slider. Overall, just give the slider more space to back up. Hope this works for yall!
The projected image will be more improved, the colors better and overall image sharper and more clear if you paint the inside of the box flat black, or even line the box with some black fabric or velvet. It eliminates the reflected light from the phone screen on the inner surface of the box that bleeds out through the lens and reduces the image quality from stray "light noise".

I did exactly what was in the tutorial, but the image won’t seem to focus. I thought it may need to be further away so I did it again and attached the two boxes but it won’t work. What might have I done wrong?
I assume the direction of the magnifying glass matters. I haven't used a magnifying glass in a long time but if I remember right, one side shrinks and the other enlarges. Which direction should it face? Very cool idea. Can't wait to try it with my Bluetooth speaker for some fun with my daughter. 👍👍👍
This is probably a question you get all the time, but what is the maximum the image can be enlarged to on a wall? Also what would be the set distance to create that size? Amazing video dude, great editing.
I was refreshing my memories this was the second video I watched on this channel after radio transmitter ....I finally made it after years I watched this video but projected image is not that clear because I need to phone away from lens more but it is the end of the box .... next video make a projector at home I know you can...
Kincses Richárd Ohh wait. I misunderstood. No don't use white cloth or foil. I thought you were talking about the wall where you're projecting it. You should paint the walls of the box black.
Kincses Richárd It is a bit hard to explain. Those lights are just stray lights. They won't reflect an image but rather it would just give a dim background light that would ruin the details given of by the projection.
Ok great video, but he never mentions needing, a hacksaw, Elmer's glue, exacto knife/compass, or double sided tape. And we never used the masking tape at all. Not that one couldn't improvise these items but lets make proper descriptions for our videos guy. Thanks
Thanks, it works! Focusing is the hardest part😄 My version isn't this intricate though (in case it failed). I put a small hole in the lid for the magnifying glass handle instead of cutting it off.
+Maddi S well just look at how blurry the picture quality he shows is, and how dim it is. you'd be better off with a cable that connects your phone to the tv, or buying a real projector but a good clear image will cost at least $500
This is quite interesting. The image was too faint so I decided to simply look directly through the lens at my phone. Of course its magnified and a lot brighter but it's also in 3D. This came as a surprise. Your left and right eye see two different images which when combined yield a stereoscopic effect. Wow why didn't I think of this before. Nb I used a 5x magnification biconvex lens with a focal length of ~ 240 mm.
Mine isn't working 😭tell me what I did wrong? I used a shoebox and created hole for magnifying glass and inserted my phone in and it's coming very blur
According to one source, it's because your magnifying glass lens is too thick. Use a less powerful lens because you want to project further away. With a thicker mag lens you have to get too close to the wall for it to be clear. Hope this helps you.
I've already seen a similar video like this before, but this looks more better and simpler + there are comments here that really helps and contributes to improve the quality etc...

Had an idea to make this for my friends birthday so we could watch a movie while social distancing. I went out and bought a magnifying glass which took ages to find. However after spending approximately an hour making it i sadly found out it does not work at all . I decided to try and add another shoe box to lengthen it like a comment suggested it did not work. Would not recommend.

Thanks a lot .I tried it and it worked .For the first time I thought that wouldn't work but I didn't give up and after some trying I made It .Thanksssssssssss a lot
can you help me?
"Today we are building a clock!" One day later "Shit."
more like "Today we are buying a clock from walmart, putting the innards into a small case"
I did exactly what was in the tutorial, but the image won’t seem to focus. I thought it may need to be further away so I did it again and attached the two boxes but it won’t work. What might have I done wrong?
Hi friends
I assume the direction of the magnifying glass matters. I haven't used a magnifying glass in a long time but if I remember right, one side shrinks and the other enlarges. Which direction should it face?
Very cool idea. Can't wait to try it with my Bluetooth speaker for some fun with my daughter. 👍👍👍
Well if you think properly, you want to "project" so I advice you to use the magnifying side, which isn't hard to figure out. 😐
I think he used magnifying glass that has the same sides.
Art Spot Airbrush both sides enlarges dude
I’m Here Because Quarantine Officially Starts Tomorrow 😂 well in a 2 hrs
And it's still continues.
Remember when we thought quarantine was going to last for 2 weeks🤣
@@probablykayla6695 fond memories
I made this in 2012 when I was a small boy 👦
4 years is not as much to make you a big boy
how old are you, 12?
20
did it work for you?
Ur the 10 year old kid with a Minecraft profile pic
This is probably a question you get all the time, but what is the maximum the image can be enlarged to on a wall? Also what would be the set distance to create that size? Amazing video dude, great editing.
Depends on size of magnifying glass and the magnification power it had probably. So just experiment and figure it out.
@@bhavbot6819 ur 6 years late
@@chaos598 Not for me
I was refreshing my memories this was the second video I watched on this channel after radio transmitter ....I finally made it after years I watched this video but projected image is not that clear because I need to phone away from lens more but it is the end of the box ....
next video make a projector at home I know you can...
You'll need to extend your box to make it longer, cuz of the larger display.
Doing a movie dinner date with my bf and projectors are so expensive!! This is perfect thank you!!
Can you boost the brightness of the image if you fill the walls of the box with tin foil ?
Kincses Richárd Good question. No. Get the whitest and matte looking cloth you can find.
TechBuilder Paint the box white?
Kincses Richárd Ohh wait. I misunderstood. No don't use white cloth or foil. I thought you were talking about the wall where you're projecting it. You should paint the walls of the box black.
TechBuilder Why? Black color does not reflect light.
Kincses Richárd It is a bit hard to explain. Those lights are just stray lights. They won't reflect an image but rather it would just give a dim background light that would ruin the details given of by the projection.
Mines didnt work ..i got a magnifying glasses from dollar tree 🤷🏾♂️
I just picked mine up from dollartree 1🥲

That is definitely something I wanna try during quarantine!

The idea is nice. Could make for a good science project js
Donna Dun
Exactly why I'm here haha. Bomb ass science teacher, teaching us optics.
“Oh no there’s a protrusion.”
And that's magnifying glass's purpose fulfilled!
Ok great video, but he never mentions needing, a hacksaw, Elmer's glue, exacto knife/compass, or double sided tape. And we never used the masking tape at all. Not that one couldn't improvise these items but lets make proper descriptions for our videos guy. Thanks
I tried making it and it worked! this is so amazing! thanks!
post the vid. pls
Does it throw enough light to show on the surface of the walls in the dark?
Does it look good tho??? That's what matters
Thank you so much this definitely helps me with my science project👍
Did it?
what size magnifying
glass did you use?
Thanks, it works! Focusing is the hardest part😄 My version isn't this intricate though (in case it failed). I put a small hole in the lid for the magnifying glass handle instead of cutting it off.
He forgets to mention that it NEVER focuses
Its_aiyana_boi Lol yeah right!
You forgot to install the autofocus
he literally says move the phone back and forth, until you find the position you like smh
I have done that it doesn't focus
im having the same problem
I'm worried that if I go and buy a magnify glass, that it will end up being backwards or upside down
And I've heard a lot of people say that the image is blurry! Is there anything I can do to make sure none of theses happen?!
+Maddi S well just look at how blurry the picture quality he shows is, and how dim it is. you'd be better off with a cable that connects your phone to the tv, or buying a real projector but a good clear image will cost at least $500
The image looks bad, i started with this lol and now i have a real home theatre 1080p epson projector and 7.2 surround sound
#PoorAf
The smartphone projector is not working with magnifying glass.I don't know why it is not working.
It is not working becaise magnifying glass is a convex lens which does nit diverge the image
Glad to see this video has lots of views, I found this years ago and painted murals in my apt. This is awsome
It didnt work maybe my magnifying glass was too small...

It is so satisfying to know that some kids are still doing these kind of hobbies even thought it's still involving smartphones.
Wow 7 years ago that kind of scared me it’s crazy how time flys
Imagine if future phones have projector modes? so basically you camera can be use as a projector.
We want like that
Sadly 11 months later it has not happend
This is quite interesting. The image was too faint so I decided to simply look directly through the lens at my phone. Of course its magnified and a lot brighter but it's also in 3D. This came as a surprise. Your left and right eye see two different images which when combined yield a stereoscopic effect. Wow why didn't I think of this before. Nb I used a 5x magnification biconvex lens with a focal length of ~ 240 mm.
Cool. I'll just have to learn how to read movie subtitles in reverse now. lol
You can change it on your settings
Sophie Laker how?
Sir Yoshi Quan look it up ! 😂
@@sophielaker3167 I did, that's why I'm asking. There's no setting for iPhone to horizontally flip your phone screen.
Yeah that's the problem
Mine isn't working 😭tell me what I did wrong? I used a shoebox and created hole for magnifying glass and inserted my phone in and it's coming very blur
Help me😢
You should adjust the distance between your phone and magnifying glass
According to one source, it's because your magnifying glass lens is too thick. Use a less powerful lens because you want to project further away. With a thicker mag lens you have to get too close to the wall for it to be clear. Hope this helps you.
Try to clean the lense
Put 100% brightness and turn the lights off of the room and colour the shoebox black for inside and a better lens. This may help
Will need
Magnify glass
Foam board
Mount tape
Cutter
Smartphone
Hot glue gun
Ruler
Shoebox
and a hack saw
What the size of the magnifying glass is?
I've already seen a similar video like this before, but this looks more better and simpler + there are comments here that really helps and contributes to improve the quality etc...
you can actually do this without damaging the magnifying glass!
+Ali Barakat You can fix the phone and move the lens using the handle of magnifying glass , that's a better design !
you can also get large lens like that at dollar store so/ shrug hehe
I know or you could use a magnifying glass sheet
i need a magnefine glass NOW
lol same

+Fenriz Gaahl It's irrelevant to the video, but not the comment. He's talking about the comment.
my phone doesn't lock so idk what to do... suggestions?

This will be perfect for my classic hollywood themed trunk for this year’s trunk or treat!
I just tried this after playing with it i found a good spot for focus but the view is upside down
The image will be inverted after passing through the magnifying glass ,so make sure its using down in your phone :)
Turn your phone upside down
Tbh the last time I had a magnifying glass I used it to burn things when I was like 5 and we I burned the curtain and almost burned the house down it was taken away and I have never seen one since then(the curtain was taken outside and no one was harmed😌
In order to boost the brightness, simply hold two more lenses in front of each eye. :P
lmao
+sudeepan chatterjee Isaac Newton did something similar, telescope
Had an idea to make this for my friends birthday so we could watch a movie while social distancing. I went out and bought a magnifying glass which took ages to find. However after spending approximately an hour making it i sadly found out it does not work at all . I decided to try and add another shoe box to lengthen it like a comment suggested it did not work. Would not recommend.
