This is a simplified explanation. Depending on the lens you use, a single shoe box may not be long enough and you may have to join two length ways. Also, paints the whole inside of the box matte black to reduce light reflection in the box and therefore sharpen the image.

In the case of having a 60mm lens, how long do you think the shoebox needs to be? Wouldn't the projection be more dimmed considering that the distance of the phone is very far from the lens itself? I'm really interested in making this DIY better. Hoping for a reply, cheers.

    TRY THIS BEFORE GIVING UP!!
For me, at first everything was a white blob, but then I just cut the back of the shoe box then extended it to give the slider more room to back up by glueing more cardboard. So, just keep adjusting back and forth for the box and for the slider. Overall, just give the slider more space to back up. Hope this works for yall!

The projected image will be more improved, the colors better and overall image sharper and more clear if you paint the inside of the box flat black, or even line the box with some black fabric or velvet. It eliminates the reflected light from the phone screen on the inner surface of the box that bleeds out through the lens and reduces the image quality from stray "light noise".

    • @GoldiRockRecords
      @GoldiRockRecords 8 років тому

+mupparamshyam Keep in mind also that the film itself effects the brightness - downloaded or torrented/stolen movies are typically of films at a theatre and at the best of times they are darker....
Make sure you test with a CLEAR and "real" movie or maybe youtube videos.
There are obvious tweaks, like adding the cabling for power and external speakers as well as the 'video player' you're using on your phone (iPhone or Android) because some can allow to further increase brightness, contrast, etc.

Some of you guys have tried but it didn't work. Why? Because it based on your magnifying glass thickness. You will need a very thin magnifying glass to make a projector. So, the image distance would be longer than the distance between your smartphone and magnifying glass. I have tried using different lenses. So, good luck

Review after I tried this>>> it was really easy to make and I didn’t use a hacksaw to cut off the handle I just made a small semi circle cut in the lid to accommodate it ! How it worked: I tried it once with a Netflix show and it was pretty blurry and disappointing but I looked at some other comments and it really works much better with animated shows/movies which is pretty much the only thing I’d recommend using it for but it’s great for animated stuff!!! Also to increase the brightness on your phone even more go to settings>General>accessibility>display accommodations> and slide the white point feature to increase your brightness even more :)

It's important to find out what the focal length of your lens before you buy it. Try projecting an image of the lights in the store on to the floor. The distance between the lens and the floor when the image of the bulb becomes sharp is what's important. You need at least a 5X magnifier for things to work out with a shoe box that had less than like size 18 shoes in it.

For the people for whose this method is not working try this one :->
    1• Buy a 60mm and 50mm magnifying glass.
2• Stick both together with 4 or 5 cm distance .
3• Then fix them to in front of shoe box or any box.
4• Now put Your phone in the box and download flip app to flip the video ( like - converts video from right to left , left to right ) and turn off auto rotation or download any media player or video player app ( I use VLC app for android ).
5• Now put your phone in the box and fix the distance and Then enjoy the Projecter.

This is an interesting way to make a projector for your smart phone. He uses two way tape to hold the phone. I would use double sided Velcro (male and female), so that the phone can be removed and put back many times over without making a mess.
On the mount for the phone, I would calibrate some positions and make guides so the phone can be put exactly back each time. It may also be a good idea to buy a universal phone bracket and find a way to mount it inside of the box.

Let's also not to forget to use a pom, abs, wood or maybe even an iron black box instead of a carton shoebox, let's also make a casing to implement three lenses that are vacuum sealed and divided by a silicone solution for perfect clarity and sharpness.
this is a simple diy (for funzies) project.. if you want a serious projector, buy a serious projector lol.

If you buy a cheap magnifying glass (from a discount store or pound shop), you can usually unscrew the handle and remove the lens without having to cut the handle off (check the place where the frame joins the handle to see if there is an unscrew-able part). If there are any rough edges (although there usually aren't) you can cover the edge with clear tape, or file them down if you can. Then measure the hole to fit the lens without the frame.
Should work out much cheaper than buying a hacksaw if you don't have one already.

I remember building one. Only that I don't have a smart phone back then (yet). I used it as picture projector instead, so I put bright lights inside the box as my light source. Oh and just for the point of accuracy with tools you used, i believe, the saw you used is called a coping saw as oppose to the one you mentioned, hacksaw (metal-cutting saw).
All-in-all, worth giving a try! Good for family week home project that everyone can enjoy!

This is quite interesting. The image was too faint so I decided to simply look directly through the lens at my phone. Of course its magnified and a lot brighter but it's also in 3D. This came as a surprise. Your left and right eye see two different images which when combined yield a stereoscopic effect. Wow why didn't I think of this before. Nb I used a 5x magnification biconvex lens with a focal length of ~ 240 mm.
