Tomo is so down to earth He loves his craft and the science behind it. He is relentless in searching for continuous improvements And his boards just work 🤙
So cool to see contemporary legends and pioneers elevating surfboard design and technology. Its truly inspiring for small time shapers and surfboard companies.
Really enjoyed this video. In my 32yrs surfing I've only shaped around 100 boards or so. This really got me thinking about giving it another go again. 🤙
I know I can just google it but I’m watching this now and I’m curious as to what is FireWire? What is the board made out of and what makes slater like this so much? I’m sorry to bother
@@christianburk2432 hopefully you’ve already found a few answers to this. Here’s my two cents. 1st is their PVC deck skin. There’s increased strength and over all liveliness in the board because of it. 2nd. They’re Epoxy boards that fee very similar to PU. They’ve done an amazing job dampening the boards and how they respond to chop. No other epoxy board does this like theirs.
I love Tomo too I would love to be able to afford one. But no one will exceed Kelly's contributions to the sport. Kelly's the Babe Ruth of surfing. All the credit Kelly gets isn't even close to the amount he really should receive.
Love FireWire durability and longevity. Been riding them for years . Checking out a couple Of the newer designs by Slater and Tomo Sick boards . Been riding small boards with a lot of volume for a long time . Think they are on to something Boards feel fast and loose , especially with quad set up . Better flex than the Original FireWire boards . A lot of thought going into design and shape of these little rockets They feel great under foot . Thank you both for your contributions to surfing and the boards your building. Keep on ripping ALOHA
Out of the box thinking! I kitesurf a 5”4 vanguard and it’s a incredible on how it rides. Sadly it’s hard to find tomo boards strong and durable enough to cope with strapless kitesurfing no days. This doesn’t take away the fact this Toni’s boards are absolute gems under foot. I’d like to give my vanguard a full resto and hang retire it in the mantle as a piece of history.
Combo Kellys wave with the Venus Project city design and you get... 26 perfect waves wrapping the circle city water belt all day every day every city. The future of a sane society.
@Enter the Braggn' There's not been a whole lot more happening. Onesmalltown.org is very interesting. Nice to meet you. Look me up on fb. Steven Bailey. I had boardlams make me a cloth lam of the circle city, that wraps the rail to the bottom. And Randy Ritchenberg is making the board.
Greeoughs the legend - the shit he shaped was sooo far ahead of its time. Tomo learnt from him and tomo senior. He shapes a wicked fish called the drongo!!!! Daniel started riding carbon twinies and doing sick shit on ‘em!!! He designed the hatchet fin....crazy!
Can someone help me with an honest review of the Cymatic and the Sci-fi? There's been a bunch of negative comments lately in the surf world about FireWire with outsourcing but I really don't care. I think the Sci-Fi will be crazy in NJ surf. But I don't know and with the price of boards I can't make an expensive mistake. Thank you
I got a Cymatic and I swear it’s the best board I own and I have 10 different boards! At first I thought this board wasn’t for me! It felt too lose BUT recently I picked it up again and wow!! Immediately my surf improved this board is magic! Get it!!!
Thank You for this....Volume is our "regular" surfers friend & having the ability to ride like a Jack Johnson (normal regular average or above average guy) just feel as if surfing is NEW & FRESH like it was/is when we 1st started to surf as a GROM & to capture our #GromSoul again. #Evo #Cymatic #GreedyBeaver #FUN
I like the idea of being inspired to design from nature like the dolphin fin, i have ideas of makeing a board design like from the standpoint of fish scales, fish have a vortex flow around their body because of the scales or like dimples on a golf ball flows through the air better, i want to put a dimpled surface design on the bottom of the board maybe it will be really fast on the wave maybe too fast, nobody has tried the designs i have in my head
Look what i found dude didnt know that what i was thinking is in a fin design already ohh well id still like to try it for the bottom or tail section, very interesting read though on the lessons on hydrodynamics which is what it is all about when designing a board
Its cool how standup surfing draws so much inspiration from bodyboarding, be it the cool tail section profiles like this, or some aerial manoeuvres, really cool to see :)
I'm a bodyboarder a feel the way bodyboards are constructed has held back much in the way of design innovation for 20 years now. They used to put full dimensions on them now its just length
@@krusher74 If anything, design on boogs has gone more high tech I reckon, with the use of ISS, allowing for different stringers to be used on one board, making that one board highly versatile in terms of its flex range. Boogs have been messing with tail shapes for 30 years or so now, and theres always something new popping up in that area (the Hubb lads are constantly trying new designs/ shapes). The use of twin tail channels became the norm some 20 years ago, but in the past couple of years theres been a burst of experimentation with many starting to use quad channels that vary in length and profile, along with tunnels and other cool shit. But ultimately, the proof of how good each new idea is, is in future production features, like the 8TX idea never went on, neither did the SCS, but the quadies seem to be appearing on many new boards now to accompany different tail shapes.
That quad channel seems to be the same cnc cut on every board.(out of the mesrick factory) I cant seem to find much online that really says why they do and how they surf. Ronin bodyboards seems to be the only real diversity of designs i see right now
Ahhhh it’s just gotten all a bit silly huh? Stealth bomber, Great white shark, The black Barron, fish beards, the wiggly woggly woopy woop 😂 If Kelly’s not winning heats (which he’s not) then none of these designs really matter. Nobody is going to do their best surfing on any of these things. If the canvas changes and the body changes and the inspiration changes then nothing matters 😂

Goat. Kelly is so damn articulate too. Such a legend.

Good insight guys to some of the many aspects of surfboards and shaping.

Great insight. The holy grail....easy to catch waves, but highly maneuverable. Make a 6'8?

I am the average to below average guy of whom Kelly speaks. Love this board, feels like I just think about a turn and there it is.
Really interesting👍🎯
Hey Firewire, is this a finished blank? Looks kind of rough with the CNC suction mark still present...just wondering ;-)
LoL the bit about the sci-fi at the end.

the dimple design has been used many times, and also a rough surface like shark skin.

It's the Indian not the arrow
Interesting...if I chopped of several inches of my pointy nose board, it would still ride the same.
