Word of advice. Technique is everything. It's one thing to buy a blank that's been blown already 3/4 the shape of the finished product, and then roughly skinning it down and sanding it off following the predetermined curve. There's more to "if it looks good, it is good". Measurements, templates, curves, tape and calipers are king. Skin before cutting. Measure and draw. Learn to hold the electric planer correctly, then walk and follow through with it on every sweep, constantly adjusting the angle as you go along. And always, TAIL TO NOSE. Learn to use your pit lights as you do each part, you'd be surprised what they will pick up. Use a jack, bench, and pinch planer after the electric planer. Orbital sanders are the providence of glassers and finners, not shapers. All the orbital will do is throw knuckles in the blank. There is one about 4 inches down the nose, upper left rail, and was still there at the end, take a look. And re-do your stand heads, the blank is slipping around. Re-do with pitted foam, it grabs the blank and holds it still (re-weld the heads in plumbers pipe, best thing for heads, and then carefully measure and cut the foam to fit the round pipe, and then hand sew the foam on). As was already stated, technique is everything, that's why it takes years to become a master shaper. Eventually, you'll get a set of French curves and make your own templates, then you'll shape the boards you have in your head, not in everybody else's head (lol). Best of luck, stick with it.

I think that the board of a handmaid is wonderful. I consider, as the flow of a plane when making the curvature of a board has broken off. The curve that the direction once deleted by the motion having applied to tail ? nose flows can be drawn.

i oredered my board from my shaper and i just cant wait to have it! all i can do is watch shaaping vids and wonder on what part my board is ....God Job
+john huber my experience with shapers barrels were the first generation ones that were entirely covered with teeth, they are slower moving through the foam but no risk of tearing. If you know how fast you can move with the blade you won't tear( planers that are more powerful can cut faster). The new barrels have gaps in the teeth so the waste can move away quicker but I still like blades for accuracy
It doesn't look like you're adjusting the planer depth while making passes. What depth are you keeping the planer at? I only use the power planer to skin the blanks, but would like to use it to cut rail bands and put the concave in, as you apparently did. Well done!
make a dozen boards first then access the damage, then decide if its worth it to carry on or retire. Or you can clean and shine cars like the karate kid for your keep. it took me a dozen boards over the years to feel fairly competent and feel for how they work. when you understand what a board is at its best that's the magic moment. after that all your boards will go

hey adam,nice name... don't know much about shaping boards...but i do know a little bit about carpentry .and you are using the planer in the opposite direction...... probably wasting time and energy....plus you should hold it with both hand...better stabilty /control and lees stress on your body.asa well maybe it will save u from losing a finger or 2.....best of luck with future boards adam .p :)

I wonder why blanks are 1/2 price from 20 years ago, but boards are 3x as much now. Guess people are to lazy to just make a board and shaping is a dying profession. After I went to the local surf shop for the first time in about 20 years and bought a USED board for $400, I decided I would make my next one. Who know's, maybe it will end up nice! Probably won't kill me either, just need a cool gas mask respirator thingy. Anybody want a 10 year old quiet flight for $100? LOL!
The Video is called, hand shaping a board, not "how to hand shape a board". So just enjoying the beauty of it rather than asking for each individual step is rather preferred.
Spoiled rotten these days. No decrusting a foam blank from scratch with the large tail plane then drawing out and hand sawing the plan shape, stepping in the rocker etc etc. Here it's all done. Not saying running in the rail is easy but jeez, talk about simple. Off to the shaping machine then a quick cleanup.
pbaylis1 @ La La. I used to make your boards at Fluid Drive. It does matter if the boards are symmetrical, and shaping the same board consistently lets you slowly refine your designs. How's that pickle fork design working out? lol

mate i'm not sure where your from so couldnt help you with where to get one from, but when i got mine, shipping was bout 80$

I will guesstimate 80 grit. 40 will be too abrasive, especially at that step/phase of shaping this blank.

It's called Japanese Saw. A regular saw can be use, as well as a jig saw or router. A few methods out there, even hot-wiring works.

working foam is different to working wood. this is probably why certain techniques are used
