The reason '80s comedies worked is they had a funny script to start with, then let the funny actors within that movie add to it. It's a crappy Naked Gun cash-in that's by far the WORST of the Jay Ward movies. Worse than Dudley Do-Right. And the sad thing is that it had some great SCTV talent behind it. But as a dyed in the wool Bullwinkle fan, I felt personally insulted by how freaking idiotic the film was. And how they deal with the live action version of Rocky and Bullwinkle in that film... shudder... you'd think Andrea Martin as Rocky would be fun, but it isn't. Not at ALL. I mean, the actual Rocky and Bullwinkle has problems, mainly with the pointless Mary Sue they shoved in, but at least there was a respect for the source material.

The only thing I remember about this movie was one of the strangest marketing attempts aimed at a niche audience; way back in the day, I used to frequent Gaia Online, which was an anime-themed forum website that had a focus on making custom avatars with cool accessories and whatnot. One day, when this movie was coming out, they sent users on the site an ad to try and get folks to get excited for this funny new movie, and they made a unique set of ancient armor that matched what characters would wear in the film.
It was such a strange attempt to draw attention from a userbase largely made of teens who liked anime, but at least the ad provided a plain-looking sword to contrast a lot of the over-designed weapons the site was littered with, which is honestly why I remember it at all.

I may get raked over coals for this, but I consider the Judd Apatow era of comedy kinda overrated. I mean, I still like some of the movies from that era so it's not a total loss, but you hit on some of the reasons I got tired really quickly. There were a lot of redundant characters and they set an obnoxious precedent where everyone was sassy with rambly dialogue that felt like they didn't know how to pump the brakes on jokes. If I had a dollar for everyone who thought coming up with stuff extemporaneously automatically made it good, I'd be a wealthy man.
