  • It’s one of the most under-claimed benefits which up to one million people could be missing out on - ‘Attendance Allowance’ is a benefit for those over 65 living with an illness or disability and can pay more than £400/month. The benefit aims to keep people living at home independently for as long as possible, so the money can be spent on everything from a gardener, cleaner, bills and food or taxis to and from hospital appointments. Martin Lewis explains more about this lesser-known benefit.

I’m an armed forces veteran , I suffer from severe PTSD from my tours in Iraq and afghan. I had to battle dwp and their so called medical advisors at a tribunal to get pip. A NATIONAL F**KING DISGRACE!!! I won, the judge seemed embarrassed by the whole farce and awarded me pip without the dwp advisor saying not one word for their defence. Whether armed forces or not, don’t back down; and take it to tribunal. It seems like dwp intentionally make it hard so you give up. Please don’t give up!!! I read that the majority of cases that go to tribunal do get awarded. I had everything medically prepared for evidence yet dwp awarded me no points , yet the judge awarded me the higher awards . DWP and your so called medical advisors at CAPITA are NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE!!! DISGRACFUL JOBWORTHS AND GRIFTERS WHO ARNT WORTH THE WAGES THEIR PAID!! NEVER BACK DOWN AT TAKE EM ALL THE WAY TO TRIBUNAL. Good luck and god bless you all 👍🏻

And the reason why dwp are the way they are, is because that's the way the government wants it! Approx 70% of cases get awarded in claiments favour at tribuneral, which is totally independent of dwp b*****ds! One of many ppl that have suffered and lost his life, Errol Jones. They once even admitted that lives have been lost due to their 'procedures'. If you have mh problems with no support......you have to take a few days off from the 'procedure' and keep coming back to it and keep chipping away at them and when you're ill it's nearly impossible but you've got to have 'nothing to lose' frame of mind to help keep you going.

I told my Brother about this a few months ago. He has been waiting for a hip replacement for 3 years and for the last 16 months he hasn't been able to leave the house because of the pain and my Sister in Law has had to help him down the stairs every morning, help to dress him and wash him. Luckily he has been able to get this extra money. It's a good job I listened to Martin. Thanks.

My Dad was entitled to attendance allowance after losing his bladder etc to cancer. Unfortunately we had no knowledge about this allowance for over 10 years and he struggled so much. I found out the last few years of his life and got it for him and the relief he felt was visible. He shouldn’t have to “claim” when he’s had such a serious illness, it should have been automatic.

There are around 12b in un-claimed benefits, the government /DWP know you needs the support, we fill in forms for blue badges, sickness claims, pensions, universal credit, they know all about us, but never give you the support you need if you don't specifically ask for it, many of us don't know if you get one benefit, it might open another one, the government /DWP DO know but refuse to help.

My top tip for applying for benifits. Makesure you do your homework about the benifits you are applying for. Go online or ask for help at citizen advice. Once you know what you need? And how to apply for those benefits? You will find it abit less stressful applying for these benefits. REMEMBER you paid into this benifits system, you deserve the benifits you apply for. YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT BENEFIT YOU APPLYING FOR. because otherwise you will be at a disadvantage. Because if benifits advicer knows you don't know what you want? Then you will be turned down. DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST ❤

There are benefit advisors attached to a lot of the supportive Charity’s, so see if you can ask for your son’s financial situation to be assessed, benefits are a minefield, and a lot of the time the way the forms are filled in make the difference to getting a benefit or not getting it. The forms are pages and pages of questions that are hard for the patient or indeed the most capable relative, to answer objectively to, so a experienced benefits advisor is key, they may also be able to get you or advise how to get one off, payments for equipment, your son needs. So try 1st with the epilepsy society.

Im all up for people with physical or mental disabilities/issues getting the help they need, But I took what the government said was to get people back into work who can work because going to work will help a lot of people get over there mental health issues as activity is key to any sort of recovery of this kind of problem. There is unfortunately a lot of people who play the system which spoil it for people with genuine problems who desperately need this help. People who need this help should be informed of this once an issue is confirmed by a doctor/ professional.

Why is it that today, being anxious and stressed about work is an excuse to claim benefits? 😊As you say Martin you cannot claim PIP and Attendance Allowance the criteria has becoming more rigid and 75% of claimants that should qualify or get failed many do not go through the appeals process so loose out of any benefits as stated by responses on here. The assessment system is flawed the assessors are asked to fail a percentage of people.I know this for a fact as I worked for the Citizens Advice Bureau. It is very difficult to get advice or any legal representation for a claimant due to no legal aid is available for this type of appeal and law firms or advice services are inundated with appeals if you are trying to get advice.
The Government and DWP are fully aware of the flawed system but do nothing to change it.
Assessors have even ignored medical letters confirming the claimants medical grounds for claiming.

But as far as i know anyone can claim, as attendance allowance is non means tested, they will probably give it you with one hand and take it to pay towards your fees, along with your pension, but it will stop your own funds that top up the fees being depleted so quickly. And if your loved one is getting council supported payments, contribute to that payment, im actually surprised that they haven’t made sure this hasnt been done.

The Country's debt is greatly misunderstood. It's what the UK Gov owes citizens & Bank of England in the future, not right now.
This is owed to the State pension system & Gov bond (gilt) holders plus their interest.
UK Gov only 'borrows' from citizens & BOE to cover expenditure, no one else, no other banks or credit agencies.
UK money is debt based no longer backed by physical gold or silver.

Out of ten, I would state that two are genuine. All the others are quite capable of doing the things they claim to need help with. It's a pity that the system is so badly abused as it ruins it for those who really need help... holidays abroad on the dwp. New cars on dwp. Designer clothes on dwp. The system is unsustainable and it needs a good shake up. And also regular reviews of peoples situations.... maybe this benefit should be paid under a different title as personal independence seems to be farcical.

Attendance allowance criteria is that you can only apply when you reach state pension age. Equally you cannot apply for or get universal credit after you reach state pension age. If you give out important information make sure it is correct as it causes issues when people come to CAB as they think they can get benefits that they do not meet the criteria to apply for.

Ok, what about the effect on the mental health of all the hard working tax payers that are suffering with many issues, but who are just doggedly getting on with it? We're seeing more and more people droning on about their mental health and expecting someone else to fix them, we're also seeing a portion of those people making it a lifestyle choice. If you want to talk 'post pandemic' mental health issues, where people got paid to have a holiday at home - unlike many of us that suffered both mentally and physically by the extra load that was forced upon them by being a key worker - just cast your mind back to WW1 and WW2. The people that lived through that and fought for this country and the freedoms you have today, those peole are the one's that had real mental health issues and it's a disgrace that many people in today's society would appear to be far too week and feeble to defend their own country in the modern age.
I am not attacking people with real mental health issues here, but there is a portion of society that are playing the mental health game, as there is a portion that breed children just so they can live off the back of the tax payer and both they, and our leadership that allows this to happen, are not being held to account.
