The heat of summer is over - so now is the time to turn your fridge down. Of all of the appliances in your home, refrigeration is the thing that burns through the most wattage. So if you wish to reduce the units used on your next bill, turn down that dial in your fridge as low as you can go - that is to the minimum level required to keep the ice from starting to melt.

I think my fridge-freezer is about 0.5kW a day, typically.
I wouldn't say that's the biggest draw: a modern TV or current-gen games-console would use that in around 3-4 hours, or an oven after about 20 minutes of being on
Not to mention electric water-heaters and room-heaters, for those without gas

@@jillrossiter8757 I have recently turned mine down to 1. It may be too low if we get any more warm weather - in which case I will turn it up to halfway between 1 and 2 on the dial. Every fridge is different - mine is an ancient Zanussi bought over 30 years ago. So just set it as low as you can get away without your frozen goods starting to dethaw.

The energy companies are trying to force people to get a smart meter by having a lower tarriff for those but about 20% of smart meters don't work. Also my parents had a small private pension and some savings but still got pension credit so it is definitely worth applying to see.

i dont use my gas heating anymore but between electric and gas the standing charge comes out at nearly 50% of my daily cost which is about 1-60 mostly from a fridge, freezer and a few led lights and a kettle and boiling one saucepan - standing charge should only kick in once you pay say more than £30.00 a week and increase maybe for high users (other than those on medical use needs separate rates ) so if you go cold you dont still have to pay for the luxury of it

I am a pensioner losing Winter fuel allowance.
I have a smart meter for Electricity.
    Martin, please help me!
On 21st Sept 2024 I FIxed with Octopus.
Immediately my costs went up -
    Unit cost -
from £22.586 went up to £25.2/ kwh
    Standing charge -
from 49.119 went up to 49.978 per day
This went on for a week and my electric costs was much higher than before fixing.
    Unbelievable!
I wrote emails and Octopus wrote back not admitting it was a mistake but
    insisted that's the best price!
This was on 26th Set/2024 and eventually I requested to leave the Fix.
    Martin - is this right?
Octopus increased my price and then Fixed it.
I keep saying it is still Sept, Not October yet!

I will not have a Smart Meter, however, had Britain adopted the same system as the EU I would have a smart meter, whereby the smart meters belong to the National Grid and Not private energy companies like they did in UK and a complete mess of it. This is why there is so many problems. In the EU, changing from one company to another is a seamless transaction because all the meters are identical. The private companies in UK have different smart meters that are not compatable with each other.

Assuming you have gas and radiators, adjust the central thermostat, or the thermostat on each radiator. And use the timer on your boiler to set when they come on.

How many companies dont take advantage of making extra money if there is an opportunity? - So Smart meters will bring about lower prices - well yes they would if charges were lowered in low demand times - but they wont will they? The best we are going to get is whatever the current rate is - as the new low rate - you know for those that want their evening meal at 0300hrs - and peak demand will double the charge per Kwhr - so if we live and eat at normal times its going to cost a shed load more.

How anyone ever trusted Labour is beyond me.
If Labour were any good with money, they would never lose power in the first place.
Tories are far from perfect, I know, but there's a reason they're always voted back in eventually.
It's always because Labour have crashed the economy, they've maxed out the credit cards, borrowed right upto the limit.... then spend the next decade blaming the tories for not fixing their mess quick enough (all without ever acknowledging it WAS labours fault in the first place).
There's also a reason Labour always chase the young vote too.
Youngsters aren't old enough to remember labours failures.
Youngsters are gullible and still full of hope and dreams.
Our senior citizens are disposable to Labour.
Starmer should have his knighthood stripped!!!

It is untrue that you need a smart meter for any tariff change or pay by standing order.
Clearly Blind children and adults are required by primary legislation to have NO barriers whatsoever to services and can choose under the equalities' legislation how this could e achieved. It maybe a criminal offence for any electricity company to threaten in any way vulnerable person who are blind further charges because of their disabilities. All electricity companies by law must automatically put blind people on the lowest tariff to avoid Ofgem fines.
Like the winter fuel means testing scan del blind people don't fill in forms as its not a format for the blind by high court order. If you want to apply for winter fuel and other concessions, they must be automatically targeted on the social services registers at councils.
Alll blind people are by legislation on social tariff. Means testing is not the solution.
For the blind, a typical 300 winter fuel payment they will never get as they only use cash payments. The burocacy involved in means testing works out for a severely disabled person as an estimated cost of 172.50 for the 300 payment...this is not what we pay taxes for... Just remove all standing charges for the blind completely instead.

I managed to grow a nest egg of around 120k to over a Million. I'm especially grateful to Adviser Kristine Lynn Weber, for her expertise and exposure to different areas of the market.

I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of
information can be a big hurdle. I've been
making more than $100k passively by just
investing through an advisor, and I don't have
to do much work. Inflation or no inflation, my
finances remain secure. So I really don't blame
      people who panic.

I guess with details and information changing all the time. All you can do is take what he says with a grain of salt and do your own research the best you can and make the decision which best suits you in that moment.
