    I remember back in the early 2000's, a single 5mm blue LED cost over US$1.50 if bought in packs of 50 from electronics retailers, over US$2 each if bought individually. A 5mm or 3mm 7-color changing LED was about US$2.50 a pop, while 5mm white LEDs were US$2 each in packs of 50. UV LEDs were about the same price as the blue ones. Today, you can get any color LED you want for just a few cents a piece, and you don't even have to get them in bulk anymore.

      Is worth knowing the electronics retailers charge a lot more for instance now I can get 10,000 LEDs from a retailer for about £100 but I can get 1 million for that straight from China if you bought straight from the factory the cost would have been greatly reduced

      @UKsystems Yes, that's a given if you are able to meet the manufacturer's or supplier's MOQ. As an ordinary hobbyist who goes through maybe 500 LEDs or less in a year, nobody would bother with me, except retailers, especially way back 20 years ago when blue & white LEDs were considered new technology.

    FYI, native English speakers never, _ever_ call them “beads” - that is strictly something Chinese translations use. We simply call them “LEDs”.

    • @ytfanlingeric
      @ytfanlingeric 4 місяці тому +1

      Your English vocabulary lesson in this video which focuses on the process and technology in manufacturing the "round shaped LED beads" (as opposed to the SMT type flat LEDs tabs/pieces?) is very impressive and much appreciated. Chinese translations should follow the US (western) rule-based nomenclature, despite the manufacturing process is the key of this video.
      And BTW, though not quite related to your lesson, if these LEDs are also to be sold outside of China, then by US nomenclature rule it is not "capacity to export" but "overcapacity".

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 4 місяці тому +1

      @@ytfanlingeric I understand the rationale, but in English, round-vs-flat isn’t the first level of the hierarchy by which LEDs are classified. First is THT/SMT. After that, THT gets classified by overall shape as it is viewed (round, square, etc). Then by the profile as seen from the side (dome (standard), flat, etc).
      Of course, anyone could figure this out by looking at how native English datasheets and catalogs describe them.
      Note that I did not say “US”, I said “native English speakers”, because this is not specific to USA, it’s how it’s used in ALL English speaking countries.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 4 місяці тому +1

      @@ytfanlingeric As for overcapacity: ummm… no?
      Overcapacity means simply “when you can’t sell as much as you can make”. It says NOTHING about where you sell your product.
      Not that it made any sense for you to bring up this unrelated topic.

    • @ytfanlingeric
      @ytfanlingeric 4 місяці тому

      @@tookitogo Your understanding of "overcapacity" is what I understand, but the US Secretary of Treasury says otherwise and is accusing China of that for exporting EV cars, and Europe follows suit to hinder the otherwise good selling due to the great demand. That is, the US (western) has their rules of nomenclature for "overcapacity" among some other terms, and they are asking others to follow.
      I did specifically note that it was not related to your lesson. What came to mind was that some westerners think it is wrong for China to not follow their rules/terminology.

    • @ytfanlingeric
      @ytfanlingeric 4 місяці тому +1

      @@tookitogo
      As for round and flat shaped LEDs, the point I wanted to make was LEDs have different shapes, and did not intend to touch on LED technology.
      This is simply a video about the process of making LEDs, not one about language. Of course, you have your right and freedom to comment on others' English in non-language related videos. The point is whether it is necessary, and whether different expressions are tolerated. Having said that, this will depend on people so I am not going to debate on that.
      There were also Chinese viewers who picked on westerners' inaccurate pronunciation of "Chang'e" which is a Chinese lunar lander. I also pointed out to them that the video was about the "lunar landing", and not about pronunciation of the lander, so it is unnecessary to pick on westerners' pronunciation of a Chinese word, as so doing in that context was unnecessary.

    Very interesting video.
    I'm surprised by how much manual handling there is.
    Keep in mind that 5mm LEDs are old tech. They have to be inserted manually into holes on the PCB, which is great for hobby projects but not so for industrial products. For those, you need surface-mounted (SMD) LEDs, which can be handled robotically at the circuit board factory.

      @UKsystems Місяць тому

      Through all components can be inserted by machines and it is done quite often through all LEDs are good for certain types of enclosure where a surface mount one would result in the need of a light pipe which has to be manually inserted and has an injection moulding cost also if there is another through whole part sometimes it could be cheaper than a surface mount one if it is already going through soldering

    I was surprised at how unclean the LED manufacturing process is.
    In the semiconductor manufacturing process, the process of attaching a case to the chip is called the post-process, but it needs to be done more cleanly.
    Products made in unclean factories like the one in this video often break down after a relatively short time.
