The word bureaucracy itself is bad, good, and in between. I have lived to a couple of continents there are weak regulations esp. house materials and construction, urban plans, old cars on roads, etc costing mass deaths.
Our civilization has been affected a lot by Europeans, Americans and recently (after 1980s), Japanese industrial imagina😮tion and reliability in all industries. I believe the "shaken' car process must have helped reliability to the entire car Japanese manufacturers because of the RELIABILITY in cars on roads (Quality mindset, Edwars Deming). I love to watch videos like yours giving recent backgrounds of the history of industry. Thanks, Mike-san🤜🙌👍🥇
Oh my god. You could probably get a TV show out of different kinds of bureaucratic adventures in Japan! You're really good. Loved the positive ending too 😁
Hi Mike! Thanks for another amazing and informative video! It was awesome to see your experience with the hanko develop as your day went on. Thanks for including it in this video! 🚙🚗
Was a wonderful episode! It spurred me to look for my Hanko, which is stored away for the next time I buy a car in Japan. Ha! P.S.: We want more Moco Loco reviews.
I was trying to do topics with a bit more depth, but if that is what Stan-san wants, I will definitely try to do one when an interesting signature sandwich from Makudonarudo comes out! :)
Just found your channel. Very useful and informative. I did think a damaged hanko would be impossible to replace. Better to have one that can be reproduced should that ever be necessary. Unless they would allow you to register a different hanko but that seems unlikely given all the roadblocks you outlined.
Very informative video from your new subs. As a foreigner who is planning to lived for long time in Japan, this is interesting since I also have plan to buy used car in here.. 👍
this is very informative ! thank you. i cannot seem to find videos on UA-cam about the Car Buying Experience of Japanese New Car Dealerships. I was only able to find yours on used cars. I'm from Canada
In the States, I think that the average buyer (not me) trades-in their car on a whim, sort of the classic "emotional" sale. Dealers here have to make sure a prospect never leaves the lot before their buzz dissipates. Therefore they can do everything, including title and insurance, even on a weekend, on the spot so you get that car "today". Hence this emotional play is what gives used-car salesmen their bad name. In Japan, the bureaucracy involved could never be driven by an emotional high, so they use that nasty and expensive bi-annual exam to motivate people to upgrade.
Very interesting! I never thought about the car "today" concept, but makes perfect sense. Thank you for sharing! Do used car dealerships ever offer some kind of warranty on their cars?
I found this Very Interesting and some of it makes no sense, but hey many places are like that, some countries make things harder than they should be to put money in peoples pockets.
this was a cool video. The trials and tribulations to buy a car is no joke, here in america you know we can throw a for sale sign in the window and thats about it. Its a stark contrast thats government run amok with so much bureaucracy.
Thanks for sharing this video. I have a plan to visit Japan end of this year and I would like to visit to the cities where they sell used cars and car spare parts to export to Africa. Do you have any recommendations on those cities to visit?
I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION. IF YOUARE TRYING TO PURCHASE YOUR 3RD NEW USED CAR...WOULDN'T YOU HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PROCESS WITH THE HANKO AND CAR PARK REGISTRATION ALREADY? YOU ALSO STATED THIS WAS YOUR 3RD TIME BUYING A CAR FROM THIS DEALERSHIP. SO WHAT WAS THE PROCESS THE FIRST 2 TIMES YOU BOUGHT A VEHICLE?
short answer. Try not to buy a car in Japan because the total cost of ownership is astronomical. The rules encourage people to abandon usable cars. As I travel around I see multiple abandoned vehicles daily.
How is the process of registering a car in Japan. If the car has shaken do you still need to register at transportation office or you do it when shaken expires. I'm confused on the process
Hi Mike 🙋♂ Just a quick question about shaken. You mentioned that you traded in your colt due to the upcoming shaken. My question is: will the next owner who buys your colt be obliged to pass the shaken since it will be expired by then? Should they consider paying for the car price plus the shaken or is there something I'm missing? Thank you 🙏
Living in Japan for over 4 years now, I also have realised that life in Japan is full of bizarre little rip offs that would be impossible in Germany. The fraudulent Japanese way of product packaging alone would have landed people in jail plus business closure if practised in Europe.
Is it cheaper to buy a car in Japan direct from 2nd hand car dealership or buy direct from the many Japan auction house in the country? Any advice and tips will be greatly appreciated.
Lots of great info, and I've been dealing with Gulliver's the past few days on trying to get a used Mazda CX-5. However... they are asking me about a Japanese guarantor since I don't yet have permanent residency. I own my own house outright and that's still not enough for them. However, I don't have any Japanese friends close enough to ask to be my guarantor. My company will lease a car to me, but there are several terrible reasons I don't want to do that: 1) it's a lease, not a purchase, 2) it's 35,000/month -- much too expensive for what I'd get, 3) it's a small, economical type vehicle -- I don't get to choose what I get -- but I'm over 186cm tall. Right now, I'm at a loss as to what to do. It's pretty lame that I can't even get a small auto loan for a secondhand car.
Getting hanko and registering in city hall just so u could use it insead of sign was all worth it but i still dont see the reason why extra 6600 yen for the parking spot i already paid for 😅 id rather request to chane my spit one my previous spot payment expires and this time register my new car instead 😂😊
I think the latest Godzilla movie also covered the red tape of japan and how that caused Japan to be destroyed by Godzilla because of all the inefficiency between the government agencies
Do you know how to google, lazy boye? You can use goonet as a reference but need at least an export company Japan to do the process of bidding/buying and shipping, AFAIK.
Long time no see! I sent it for confirmation, but I can see your home address many times in the video, is that okay? I was worried, so I sent you a message.
Or try to take your business somewhere else that does not require an insecure hanko. Make a big deal about the absurdity of the rules before you tell them that you will try to find another competitor. Maybe you don't find another dealer without a hanko and you have to use it; but we all need to push back a little to get the businesses to talk about it. They will not change until it hurts business enough
It doesn't matter how they look to you if they are good and sought after. You are definitely not a JDM fan otherwise you would at least know about the USDM Honda Fit.
Love this guy’s positive attitude towards the most challenging car buying bureaucracy I’ve ever seen!
Okay, so you love sugar coating a turd. 😂
The word bureaucracy itself is bad, good, and in between.
I have lived to a couple of continents there are weak regulations esp. house materials and construction, urban plans, old cars on roads, etc costing mass deaths.
Love the energy Mike. I like how you expressed your frustrations and did not try to sugarcoat the inefficiencies.

Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks always for the feedback. Very much appreciated!
Mike ,Gulliver car dealership are exporting car worldwide or just for Japanese market only?
Good day, I just discovered your channel. This is probably the most interesting channel I have ever seen. Congratulations. Pierre
The complication makes sense. This extra steps and costs created the order and clear responsibility.
In the US 18k miles per year is the norm, many 4-5yo vehicles with 100k or very close to that, but we are two different cultures

Very well explained!

Yes, that is "sasuga, America!" Quick, practical and done. :)
Hello, very informative vlog! Do the prices reflected on Gulliver's site the final price of the cars?

I hope he brings up the rebate exporters get when they export a car out of japan
What an odyssesy. The inefficiency of Japanese efficiency
Japan is a land of paradoxes. Thanks for watching.

Hey Mike. would they do wheel conversion for Toyota LC80 in Japan before it can be shipped to countries that required left hand drive?
You could make a hanko at any Don Quijote for 1000 yean.

Yes they do
Great video! I'm getting scared with this bureaucratic face of Japan as well

It has to have a Shaken. This is why so many of these cars are exported to other countries.
Living in Japan for over 4 years now, I also have realised that life in Japan is full of bizarre little rip offs that would be impossible in Germany. The fraudulent Japanese way of product packaging alone would have landed people in jail plus business closure if practised in Europe.
why not finger print (thumb print) ?
I need to order a Mitsubishi pajero junior. Do you have in stock at how much.i am in Zambia

lol man i am going through Japan registration right now. I thought Canadian bureaucracy is bad ...
Oh man..
I had the same disappointment as you back then.
Especially the hanko and parking lot.
Anyway, nice content...
Is it cheaper to buy a car in Japan direct from 2nd hand car dealership or buy direct from the many Japan auction house in the country? Any advice and tips will be greatly appreciated.
I think buying from an auction must have a lot of hidden things to know and would be very challenging. But I don't know.

Thks - great 👍!
I got mine from Don Quixote! I believe I paid Y500 or Y1,000.
I want to know more information selling and making marketing
I think the latest Godzilla movie also covered the red tape of japan and how that caused Japan to be destroyed by Godzilla because of all the inefficiency between the government agencies
With houses and with cars, the rules and valuation structures encourage people to abandon usable cars and buildings.
I changed my car recently and the parking space owner asked for 40.000 yen. It angered me so much. Money for nothing.
Hi mike.i need to buy a car from japan on online. Please can you tell me which site can i buy useda car from japan

There are some people who are shipping used cars to Africa.
