Video Games are immersive, but if you fail to distinguish between reality and fiction, especially after playing a game, you’re a danger to society, and not because of the video game.

The debate relates to kids playing these games and how they influence they development for the future. If it would have been just about adults would be mich easier to decide
@@cocojambo2330 If your child becomes a hateful gremlin after playing Fortnite, that was not Fortnite’s fault. It just shows what you as a parent must work on with your child. In any way beyond that, video games don’t have any more influence on children than a book does.

Mainly because they are not. In Germany almost all movies and games get rated by the industries itself. To avoid edge cases and a worse rating than expected, developers usually censor themselves without any government involvement.

A WW2 grand strategy game called Hearts of Iron 4 is also heavily censored, with Hitler’s picture covered in an ominous silhouette and his in game name changed to “Armand Hiller”.
The censored portrait looks more evil than the original portrait
I honestly think signs like the swastikas or the communist russia signs shouldn't be banned whatsoever in any games just to become softer for those that complain. You dont like it? you ignore it or dont buy it simple, however signs like the swastikas or any other famous figure resembling something banned should most definitely be put in games because it is history, it shows the background of almost everything and how it came to be today. If we go by how soft any game should be for fans, then should games in the future that focus on fighting, war and action forget the impacts of the war in Ukraine? for example. In my opinion the age range rating for those games definitely hold the most importance when we think of it in this prospective

If it's opposing and/or heavily criticizing them, like in Wolfenstein, this I would personally be lenient on them.
But I'm not part of the German Broadcast Council or other authority and don't have a say. They know the guidelines better.

Running away from symbols doesn't feel like a good approach. Understanding and learning from our mistakes should be more important.
I agree but the problem isn't actually that. The problem is weither or not video games are enough art like movies or TV. Some video games can even be educational too obviously. The point is they have exceptions in the law that allows for other mediums to depict history but video games didn't count until they changed it.

All that these bans do is drive the rhetoric underground, and it places it for an explosion of it to come when the enforcement of it isn’t treated as the most extreme priority. It’s a lot to gamble on thinking you can kill ideas, especially when those ideas are receptive to those who are in particular situations that such ideologies speak towards and give them prominence.
German education on Nazism and its brutal consequences does a lot more to stop Nazism than to treat it as something forbidden through censoring artistic works (which yes, video games are a part of, certainly). And such policies, and investment into places where these ideologies hold sway to remove the materialistic forces that bring people to become radicalised, is also how you can also eliminate political parties like AfD more thoroughly.

History does not require to be censored along with symbols such as the swastika history is an important tool for us to learn from mistakes and the symbols that represent history should not be censored

The most common reason why people use these symbols is unfortunately not because of historical interest or because they love to play games. They use it to provoke and divide.

I have always had sympathy for Germans of my age (middle-aged onward) who have had to appear apologetic for events that occurred before their own parents were born. As we reach the 100th anniversary since the rise of the National Socialist movement (yes, I won't say his name of that party's name) can we not consign the entire thing to history and move on? After all the first nation ruined by their twisted ideology was in truth Germany. Valkyrie is probably the only English-speaking global art work that has portrayed this accurately (IMO).

If this is what you get out of the video that a) a ban is in effect since the 50s and b) the broad ban of the depiction of the symbol in video games was lifted 5 years ago, then please take at least a hearing or vision test, somethings not right.

The relaxing of bans against The Swastika, the most hated form of the Christian Cross that ever existed has led to or at least helped with the resurfacing of worldwide anti Semitism and White Supremacy movements. I think therapy should be more accessible and more parents should be involved in their child’s life cause the issue is not video games in of itself but people trying to bring non fiction into fiction, people being incapable of differentiating reality from a video game or movie and people that use said video games and movies to spread a negative message
