  • If you are curious about how the refrigerator was invented, you will find out everything by watching this video. Everything started when Scottish professor William Cullen designed a small refrigerating machine in 1755. The next big step took place in 1856, when the first practical vapor compression refrigeration system was built by James Harrison, a Scottish Australian.
Carl von Linde patented an improved method of liquefying gases in 1876, which made possible the use of gases such as ammonia, sulfur dioxide and methyl chloride as refrigerants. The first refrigerator to see widespread use was the General Electric "Monitor-Top" refrigerator introduced in 1927. The introduction of Freon in the 1920s expanded the refrigerator market during the 1930s and provided a safer, low-toxicity alternative to previously used refrigerants.

You failed to mention a lot of modern (new) refrigerators now use r290 as refrigerant. r290 is also known as Propane, which happens to be flammable. 134a, 404a (non-flammable) are still legal to use on refrigeration side, but manufacturers are moving to propane.
Even window A/C units are starting to use propane. I haven't seen any split systems with propane yet, 410a being used..no more r-22 (no longer manufactured) unfortunately...probably the best refrigerant ever made. Lots of changes being made in refrigerants used now, all because of EPA and the ODP (ozone depleting potential) of some refrigerants. Ammonia still used on Industrial refrigeration.

It's funny how the company name "Frigidaire" is literally how you say "fridge" in my language. That's one hell of a branding.

My grandma is from Rhode Island and she has a very strong New England accent she always said but she would say Frigidare, I always wondered why she called it that I think it's because from my research Frigid air was one of the first brand to make electric refrigerators my grandma her name is Maybelle was born in 1931 and passed away in 2018.

Ass far as I'm concerned , creators are the real gods of humanity, because you can see and feel their creations, and they don't demand that you worship them eternally or you shall suffer forever in some fictional hell.

I hate when people call the refrigerant "Freon" ...its a brand and it's universal name is "refrigerant" not freon. R22 chemical compound is Chlorodifluoromethane or difluoromonochloromethane..which is a CFC and very bad for the environment..then r12, r134a, and the high pressure R1234yf and then R744 to name only a few mostly for automobiles, which is safer for the environment especially r744 which is carbon dioxide..but needs very high pressure to evaporate and condense properly.
I'm gping too far..but its not Freon..its refrigerant!! I think of dumb toothless trucker hat wearing backyard hillbilly mechanics that call it Freon. I'm an ex ASE certified auto tech with Master certifications, and I specialized in Air conditioning, heavy engine repair and suspension...that term Freon really urks me..lol
