The Maglite LED +might not be the brightest flashlight out there, but from what I have been looking, the traditional Maglite never let me down in the "throw it in the water" department. I had a Radio Shack LED flaslight which I liked a lot, but I had it on my swimming trunks' pocket at the beach, and when I arrived home, I noticed that water had leaked through that click on / off rubber switch every flaslight seems to have nowadays, and the effect was similar to leaving your batteries unattended for a long time (corrosion and leakage). My 1999 Maglite has never taken any water into it, and I still like the traditional design which still seems impervious to water.

I know many electricians and other workers still like the incandescent ones for close up work as it does not blind them and they are better in candle stick mode on your eyes.

Mag-Lite actually makes specialty ones for electricians under their spectrum series, there's a warm white and the description specifically mentions it's for electricians.

This is one of the worst issues with LEDs in general: The fact that blue is cheaper than yellow. I still know people who refuse to upgrade to LED bulbs because they are under the impression that all LEDs are cool and warm ones don't exist.
So sadly, for flashlights, you need to do more work to find the right ones with proper available temperatures. Fortunately, however, once you find them, they really aren't that different in price. You'll be preferably looking for variable output with the low or mid being up to 30ish lumens and in the 3000K--4000K range, depending on your warm/cool preferences.
Most off the shelf are around 5000K, with those crappy Chinese "3xAAA" dollar store LEDs looking like they are freaking 7000K or something.

I've got a basic silver AA mini mag I've had for almost 10 years, it's been converted with a really bright white led bulb, spent a week in a fish tank, and chewed on by a terrier. most durable flashlight ever.

Maglites PRO+ have different outputs depending on the color of the body which I think it's strange.
Black and Red ones have an output of 351 Lumens while grey and blue are only 245

    • @Gieszkanne
      @Gieszkanne 2 роки тому

What dou you want with that much lumen? For edc around 100 is enough and then you have longer run time.

I love these flashlights, I have both. Also the traffic wand attachment makes an excellent lantern on these flashlights especially in candle mode; less blinding and more evenly dispersed light.

LED flashlights have massive powerful and brilliant on many dark uses I think.

I had bought the Mini Maglite Pro (non-plus) in like 2013 and was pissed as hell to see that they had the + version with two light modes. Previously, I had the one they came out with before that, with the high, low, SOS and strobe, and I assumed the pro version would be the same... Either way, they've both served me well. I'm definitely looking to grab a Pro+ and the low mode on this version is about equivelent to the high mode on my older LED mini maglite, which I believe could only do under 10 hours on that older version... So 27 hours for that same output is freakin sweet.
Anyway, sorry for the rant lol. Great video, it was very helpful.

The old style is Incandescent, not fluorecscent. My Maglite LED AA is not the Pro. It has a 3rd option which is flashing. With the red traffic wand, if placed on the back shelf of a sedan it would get quick attention from law enforcement in case of an emergency. Great video.

Do you know what color temperature the led light have?
It looks kind of blue and that might not be so good since I want a flashlight in dark places to shoot photos with.

Simplicity is key with value items,If you want a quality product without spending a lot of money you gotta make sacrifices.
Do you want fancy or just well made and affordable , because you can't always have it all.
This is why I love chanellock pliers, maglite flashlights, and Buck knives.
I'm the type who doesn't pay extra for fanciness that just doesn't gain me anything for my needs.
My Bushnell flashlight was a great flashlight that has served me well but just got tired of tolerating the tacticool lol of the thing and replaced it with a new 2AAA led mini Maglite.
Couldn't passing up in the hardware store today as it was less expensive than the made in China Bushnell was and is brighter.

  • @svtcontour

the flicker is not because its LED, but because its being pulsed to dim and extend the run time. If you run an LED on constant DC, then there is no flicker.

Just got a brand new "Mini MagLite Super-Bright Xenon Lamp™". I decided to "unbox" it, and also see what others have to say about it as well. I own the Xenon bulb version, not LED.
After watching this video, I would suggest spending a few bucks more and getting the LED version for utility/general purposes (at the store I was at, the LED version does cost more), due to increased brightness and battery life.
However, the Xenon bulb is pretty bright and seems to render more pure white color temp (LED's tend to look a bit "blue" in some settings, especially if the light is being reflected, or refracted through any kind of lens, as you can see in this video).
This is a particularly important consideration, if you are using it to light any sort of photography or film (you probably wouldn't be lighting a scene with a flashlight, but you never know). In terms of tactical considerations, I'm sure the difference in color temperature and brightness may affect one's night vision as well.
I would not have considered this a "budget" flashlight at it's price, but as I had a gift card and mostly everything else available in the store was only clothing, I cannot complain. Who doesn't need/want another flashlight? Keep them everywhere at all times... lol.
Important note: My MiniMag (purchased 12/21/2018) came with two Energizer alkaline batteries (not Duracell) included in it's retail packaging - I'm no connoisseur of batteries, but they are certainly a consideration in the retail price of this product. In any case, Energizer or Duracell are definitely better than the crappy off-brand batteries that come packaged with most "budget" flashlights.
My major criticism of this product so far: Twist to turn on/off, and bulb is not protected when the lens casing is removed. Accidentally removing the lens casing (due to twisting while focusing, or if you forget which direction to turn on/off) presents a pretty frequent threat to the lamp itself. The "candle mode" just seems like a convenient cover-up for the fact that you can just accidentally remove the lens casing in a few turns of your wrist and damage the bulb.
On the plus side, MagLite did not cheap out on any fundamental technologies or construction (such as the solid aluminum alloy casing, and smooth, sturdy water resistant gaskets). Without taking the product through any sort of torture test, it seems pretty durable.
P.S. 1st time viewer of your channel, thanks for the candid comparison. Just a side question, where was this filmed? It looks like some sort of dormitory, if I had to take a guess, but I'm really curious because of that high security door leading straight into what appears to be a bathroom sink, lol.
    Cheers, subscribed! =]

Didn't know they still made the original mini maglight? I have some of the old ones collecting dust in some drawer somewhere. I also have a couple of the regular LED versions and they have been good light. That pro looks nice , but I have found those super bright lights are a con when your working on stuff at arms length. Thanks for letting us know they have a "pro" version now.

I'm so with you when it comes to being affordable, parts being easily accessable but also reliable. It is like a Mora knife, can't beat it for the price.
Personly I buy all my flashlights in AA, as I like the fact that they're cheap and easily accessable. It saves you money and time in the long run, not having to go for special batteries, and buying different types of batteries.
In that search I've found five lights I really enjoy
    Inova X1 (1xAA Batteries) 100+ lumens
    Inova X2 (2xAA Batteries) 200+ lumens
Duracell MLT (5xAA Batteries) 500+ Lumens
Nitecore HA40 Headlamp (4x AA Batteries) 500 Lumens
Inova Radiant-200 Lantern (4x AA batteries) 200 lumens
This maglite with its candle function is soon gonna be part of my collection, as it is AA and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Maglite flashlights are known to last and 200+ lumens is respectable in 2aa batteries.

I love my little mini mag lite. Had it 11 years and has never done me wrong. From camping to hiking to getting lost in a city I didn’t know. It’s my little side kick. Personally I think now days a lot of these flashlights are over rated and provide way to much lumens so it seems. Great video enjoyed watching it and be well brotha now subbed

I had some maglites back in the xenon days had good reliability and performance. Haven't tried the LED maglites, but every led flashlight I have ever brought into my house (Including some that cost more than a flashlight should.) have gone belly up in a few months due to janky electronics. I mean is falling out of my hand onto a residential carpet really hard use? Old plastic junker flashlights could take more abuse even with the fragile incandescent filament.

Have had this light for maybe 10 years now, did all the adventuring a kid would do and also bought a mount to use it as my bike light all winter. Fell down a couple stairs as well and if you use this thing with good batteries that don't poop out in low temperatures this thing will work unprotected in rain and cold reliably. I did have some flickering with low quality off brand batteries but have started using the Energizer lithium ones and didn't have any more problems so it was the batteries. Only thing is you really should put some Vaseline on the threads and o rings sometimes like they suggest because you really move the head a lot. I never did and it got a bit cranky after about 5-6 years. I was worried my trusty companion was about do die but it was fine after i applied some and it's still with me. Just got my sister one to get to her car and back in the dark because these things always light up when they are supposed to while producing plenty of light and are also super easy to use. There's a lot of new light like olight etc but tbh I've seen maglites older than the manufacturer olight itself and they still build the tubes about the same way, you should try one if you're looking for a light i think you'll like it

I have one of these...and I like it but when it comes time to put it in my pocket and head out the door, I will reach past it and grab my streamlight stylus pro for EDC. I can't decide where it fits in my system. Too bright or not bright enough. At times I think the stylus pro is too bright and I wish for a moonlight mode. The twist operation is not what I want to deal with. I am looking at the Thrunite Ti4 penlight and if it meets my expectations it may be my new EDC.

man, those oldschool Mags had the most useless reflectors EVER, nice to see they upgraded them. Also I believe they had a xenon bulb, not fluorescent. They need to make the heads slimmer and add a pocket clip at minimum if they ever want to compete with companies like Fenix, But the candle mode is certainly a nice feature.

I have had the mini mag pro for over 3 years (the old version) just 1 mode 226 lumens for 2:15 hrs, never liked it because it was to powerful, and since the output is not electronicaly regulated it gets dimmer and dimmer like the old incandecent and the battery life is to short. I'm gonna get rid of my old version and I'll try the pro + and see what it is like.

You have to glue the upgrade part to the original piece that has the pegs so that the leads don't get twisted back and forth every time it's turned on and off. It doesn't mention that in the instructions for the upgrade. I'm assuming you had the nite-ize upgrade. I found that mine didn't really make it brighter but a whiter light that's more uniform.
