  • Looking back at the results of the European and British elections and forward to next week's constitutive plenary session, we were delighted to host a very special event with extraordinary guests.
    Susanne Oberhauser, Head of EPLO UK, welcomed everyone to an event full of reflections, assessments and predictions for the coming weeks and months.
    Oumar Doumbouya, Director of the EP's External Relations Offices, opened a panel discussion with Jaume Duch, Spokesperson of the European Parliament;
    Anand Menon, Director of UK in a Changing Europe and Lisa O'Carroll, Chief Correspondent, The Guardian.
    The event was effortlessly moderated by Monocle's Emma Nelson.

    It doesn't matter what Starmer says or thinks, he's not in control of this. The EU are the big dog and they aren't particularly interested in the yappy little mutt over the channel. Britain's future is one of managed decline, Starmer will do a much better job of managing that decline than the Tories ever could but it will still be a decline. Outside of the EU we have very little influence and outside of the single market our economy is toast. The lack of influence might not be a bad thing (we never used it for good in the past) but the economic hit is another matter. The country was already on its knees prior to 2016 thanks to corruption and nepotism. Brexit isn't the straw that broke the camels back, more like a large tree. Next stop will be devaluation of the pound followed by an IMF bailout. The really sad part about all of this is just how unnecessary it all was.

    The English still discuss changing Starmer’s mind to move closer to the EU, but seem to deny the fact that the EU is in full control (forever) of what actually will change. The English can ‘decide’ whatever they like, but the EU will make the real decisions.

    What Starmer wants is irrelevant. The EU just reminded Starmer that 8 points of the treaty signed 4.5 years ago still have not been implemented by the UK, and that even any TALKS will be postponed until those 8 topics are being solved.

    Rejoining the EU , somehow , sometime ,in some way , is essential to avoid ever more economic and social decline . To pretend otherwise is to deny the stark facts . The failed Brexit escapade of the liars leads nowhere. . Starmer & Reeve just need to get on with it !

      @peterholden3672 Please read my comment.....the only UNCONTROLLED migration is via boats and I agree it is a tiny figure in the scheme of things.. The migration from the EU whilst the UK were members was also UNCONTROLLED and overtook the supply of resources needed to cater for the over 6 million migrants.

      @@markmac9515 There was nothing Uncontrolled about EU migration, the UK just never properly used the tools it had at its disposal .
      As for resources that was your own choice. EU migrants put more money in to the economy then the average Brit, the UK profited from them. But instead of using part of that profit on a support network and help every one, you muppets kept voting for Austerity cuts and letting the rich reap all the benefits.
      But you still preferred that because the alternative was forcing useless muppets like you to upskill and move and do the jobs we actually need while letting those jobs, businesses and people that can't compete get cut. Good bye pubs, charity shops, Betting shops etc. I personally don't mind. But don't imagine that some one is going to pay double for menial jobs and either automate it, cut it completely or implement a price increase that outstrips your salary increase
