Yeah orangewood is everything they are hyped to be.
I got a Morgan live. $230. Bone nut and saddle, solid top, good gig bag, perfect set up, and Ernie ball strings. Can't beat it. It plays and sounds like an $800 guitar.
    Oh! And fishman electronics.
They are the real deal and I am crazy grateful.

Orangewood is by far the best VALUE you can find. No, it's not a Martin, or a Taylor. But, it is miles ahead of guitars meant for the person just beginning to play. If you want something you can buy and drag it around with you when you travel, this is it. It's fun and easy to play, stays in tune, and sounds much better than earlier starter or travel guitars of years ago. This guitar in the review is currently selling for $435 US.... If you want a Martin, buy a Martin.... I have an HD28. Guess which one I play most?

I have the Mason Live Torrified Spruce. These guitars are a incredible value, they play nice, look great, and the Fishman pickup records perfectly. In the end, sound and feel is subjective. If you try it and enjoy it, doesn't matter what anyone else says.

I have a Morgan Mahogany Live, and I think it sounds pretty good for what it is. I've had it for two years, and the guitar has definitely opened up a bit; and I changed the strings to Daddario phosphor bronze which might've enhanced the tone. It also has a satin finish, so that could've helped as well. The one thing I really love about my guitar is that it's highly resistant to temperature and humidity changes. I've been busking with it in 40 degree winters and 90 degree summers with crazy humidity levels, and the setup stayed the same. I only paid $275, so I think it was a pretty good buy.

Driftwood Guitars does a stunning review of a solid wood spruce/rosewood Orangewood Ava that's well worth a look. They seemed to agree that that guitar was maybe a bit muted? Over-engineered? Vibration is dampened maybe by too many braces perhaps? Big-up Alamo Music Centre & Driftwood Guitars for doing your thang - keep at it dudes :)

DG is mostly chasing clout with their videos. they make some nice looking pieces, but their style runs against the grain for me. Theyve contradicted themselves multiple times when trying to compare favorably to others in their factory tour videos, and I don't see anything that can be gained from totally destroying a guitar that can't be seen using a mirror or a bore scope.

I took what he said as to mean overbuilt. It isn't the finish. It's the extra thickness in the wood that makes sound muted. Sure there's a lot of show biz in cutting a guitar in half. Yes a trained luthier knows what he's seeing in a mirror or even a scope but can they demonstrate it to the average guy like me? I've learned quite a bit from the show.

Came here to mention this. I have a Brooklyn model and it is just beautiful and and begs to be picked up and played. But it is work to make it sing. Pretty muted tone, less resonant than my Yamahas. Awesome guitar for the money, but probably overbuilt.

Good review… one of many I’ve seen on your channel. I have two Orangewood guitars. I was nervous about buying the first because relying on internet reviews to drop $700 on their all solid wood Sage wasn’t my first choice. It has turned out great and I play it almost every day. For the price it punches above its class. The Mason live is a nylon and it’s fun as well, I will agree they laid finish on thick and it’s heavy.

I tried the mahogany Oliver, satin finish, solid top at under $200 all in with case and it sings.
I then tried the Brooklyn, only available with the gloss finish, and it wasn't as resonant. Same great build quality. Put my Tone Right pn it for 4 days and it really improved.
Orangewood needs to use satin finishes. Especially on the Torrevieja models.
Their customer service is outstanding. Try the Oliver mahogany for how an Orangewood with a satin finish sounds boys.

This video prompted a push of the "subscribe" and "like" buttons and an appreciation for your review of what is essentially a 'digital competitor' and therefore you were clearly not performing a "sponsored review"! Wish I had viewed this before purchasing an Orangewood Sage Mahogeny Live, a guitar that you may wish also review. I can add that so far this guitar meets and exceeds all expectations for a guitar at this price point..., the only problem being how much work I have in front of me to due it proper justice. Hope to return to your beautiful city someday, visit, and let you sell me a guitar!

Kudos to you both for an excellent and eminently fair review. I would like you to review an Alvarez. I bought an AF770CESHB (smaller than a dreadnought, with single cutaway, and spruce top, laminated sides and back, bone nut and bridge) at the height of Covid, when going into a store was a non-starter, and the Orangewoods were out of stock. I know that this is a big ask as I believe there is a tie in between Alvarez and a competitor store, but you asked. Thanks.

I almost purchased one of their all solid guitars but went with the RecordingKing RD-328 and haven't looked back. For those of us that can't afford a Martin D-28 the all solid wood RecordingKing RD-328 is a very good option. You may want to look at one of those too. Great video, keep up the awesome work you do. And I actually like using Copper font too.

I have the ray mahogany and after putting the the D'addario XS series strings on it it is basically one of the best acoustic guitar I've ever played to this date, and I've played a few in my 30 plus years of playing.and for the price for what I consider a great guitar for anyone trying to learn or just wants something light and not expensive as hell to take on trips or to give as a gift ,it is well worth it.

See "ua-cam.com/video/188V8tW5fug/v-deo.html" from Driftwood Guitars review of the higher end Orangewood All-Solid Wood "Ava" ($1k). Its a "Sage" without the Cut-away. They actually cut the guitar in half and really dig into the construction. Bottom Line: Dampened Sound due to super thick "Finish" (even on this Satin Finish guitar), Top/Sound Board too thick, and heavy bracing. It's a great guitar in so many other ways (especially for the lower cost), but they sacrifice the sound and that's too bad.

I have the Orangewood, Echo - Live and I love it! These come with Ball (13) strings, which give you that flattened (muted) sound (in my opinion). I suggest that you replace the strings right away. And mine is the lightest guitar (of five) I own. It’s NOT the finish!

  • @lengross4126

I give you guys credit for a completely fair review. I have owned (and returned) an Orangewood Echo and shared some of your opinions. Mine was just a basic spruce top non electric which I paid around $230 on sale. While the guitar is beautiful and very easy to play it surprisingly had absolutely no low end . It's also very quiet for a dreadnought . Not the booming sound I expected. The one area is disagree with you on is the size and weight which I felt were very comfortable.

First off, let me say that I really enjoy all the reviews on this channel. However, I found it strange that you would mention other people on UA-cam as potentially not giving these guitars honest reviews. I'm not saying that they do or don't. I would just point out that it would make sense that you would prefer people not to buy from "direct to consumer". You obviously would prefer them to buy from you. I just wanted to point out that you have the same potential for giving a less than great review as others do for giving great reviews. Just a thought I had while watching.
Having said that, I've bought plenty of guitars in stores and I've also purchased guitars from Orangewood. I would say that the value I've gotten from Orangewood at the price point is phenomenal. They're customer service has been stellar. I can agree that on some models the resonance is somewhat muted, however the playability is always excellent. There are sometimes tradeoffs at a lower price point, but Orangewood midigates many of those tradeoffs that are usually present in lower priced guitars.

I own an Orangewood Ava Mahogany, full solid with satin finish. I dropped a K&K Pure Mini in it and to my ears it’s spot on for the mahogany “sound”. Bought it during an Outlet Sale for $515 and with the Pickup it clocks in at under $700 with a hardshell case. It was my main gigger, until I picked up a Martin SC-13e.
Still a fantastic guitar (Ava) and I’m glad I got one for so little money.
If you want a comparison try the Berkeley (Topanga Collection) Dread with solid back and sides with a $300 LR Baggs installed.

I've had an Orangewood Ava for about two years now and I have to say that guitar is very good. It plays way above it's price point. It's very light and resonant too. I'm thinking about getting a mahogany Ava I like it so much. I will say that the LR Baggs Anthem that came in it was probably not installed correctly because it is way too loud in the bass no matter how I adjust the pickup. I may take it out and put a K&K mini in it.

zager and donner are some other companies that sell direct. i got a donner DAJ-110CD mini jumbo (in green) on sale and it's a surprisingly fun guitar to play (especially for the price) but it's a natural finish, not a glossy one. and when they shipped the guitar they forgot to attach the top of the box to the bottom (i kid you not). amazingly the guitar survived the journey. i did have to change the strings but donner threw in a spare set. i prefer shopping at a guitar store but my favorite local shop just closed because of retirement.

I am a bit late, but I love to see you guys review a mahogany orangewood, since all the reviews that aren’t sponsored are all torified spruce. You guys and DriftwoodGuitars agree that they are muted, but they also reviewed a TS guitar. I have the Ava mahogany, so I want to see a unbiased review on the Ava mahogany, but a Oliver or Morgan would be nice too. I have a 4 year old Echo, no pickup, and I am just a hobyist and don't even understand most of the criticisms, It arrived ready to play, and I have only adjusted the truss rod once with maybe an 1/8th turn. I dislike a harmonic that occurs when playing in A key, but many would just say that is sustain. Anyway my friend has a Gibson Hummingbird, that must go to the luthier every year as humidity changes bend the neck. I say that for basic low end at home players, the Echo with no pu is a perfect match, and set up well and stable, thus low maintenance.

The thing is that demos at youtube are proving to be better and better enabling folks to make selection out of store. Folks are also becoming more confident in tackling set up procedures with the help of instructional videos. Then there are the luthiers who may do better work than guitar retailers. Niche builders aren't using dealers. However; all guitarists will always want to visit guitar stores. Your task is to close that enthusiastic player who beams delight with that special find. Retailers may also need to improve accessibility to a sound room or to start taking demo bookings so that the in store experience can be optimized.

I have a Dana Mahogany by Orangewood. It is the smallest they make. All laminate with satin finish. It sounds a bit tinny because of its size but has better sustain than I expected. It came setup pretty well but with a tiny bit of buzzing on the 5th and 6th frets. Changing the strings seems to have helped. I never adjusted the truss rod. Know that their lower end guitars have a very thin embossed logo on the headstock. I’ve worn it off from clipping on my capo. I like the Taylor GS Mini way better than the Dana, but for the price I would recommend Orangewood’s Dana for a travel guitar that might take some bumps. I paid $112.00 for mine with the first time Customer discount of 15% off. The gig bag has no structure, but it’s nice. Customer service is good.
I’ve been considering one of their solid wood guitars, but Yamaha’s AC3M DLX A series is very competitively priced and I have actually gotten to play one. It felt nice. If only it was rosewood instead of mahogany and came with a case. And I prefer satin finish. So I’m still on the fence.

    It's not a $1200 guitar but it's a really fine $450.
It's tone is close enough to my old Guild JF 30 that was stolen to satisfy me. But the neck is a little wider than my guild was and took a little getting used to but wasn't bad, just different from the guild.

As from Driftwood, they took one apart and showed the "overbuilt" bracing and heavy wood used in it on the inside which makes it built like a tank but at the expense of resonance. The gloss while looking great was also so heavy as to contribute to the damping factor as well. Very playable but not much for the sound.

    • @rickehrecke3118
      @rickehrecke3118 2 роки тому

The Orangewood "Echo" in the Alamo Music Center video (above) had the "Gloss" finish, however the one in the Driftwood Video was the higher-end "Ava" guitar (about twice the price) and it actually had the "Satin" finish, but Driftwood still measured some of the Ava's "Finish Chips" at .8mm (about 4-8 x's thicker than it probably needs to be). Add that to the already hefty thickness "top soundboard" & thicker bracing and no wonder there is a lot of sound dampening.

I recently bought two recording King Guitars. The RD-328 and the RDS-11! Both guitars are solid wood construction and they BLOW the the Orangewood guitars away in both playability and sound. I was highly disappointed with the workmanship in the Hudson. At just under a thousand dollars I expected better but it is what it is. I would definitely choose a Recording King over the Orangewood any day. The RDS-11 weighs in at just 4 lbs. Light as a feather with a very thin finish. As always great video guys. I always enjoy what you guys put out. Cheers.

I bought a non torrified acoustic Echo about 3 months ago. I bought it to replace my stolen Taylor 110A, a guitar that sustained me through the lockdown, and is sorely missed. Anyways, paid about $280.00 on sale, free shipping...a steal at that price point. my only issue was that I had to take the high strings down just a little, other than that its a beautiful guitar with it's satin finish, and it goes straight back into a hardshell case when I'm done playing.

I would love to see you do a review of the Orangewood Austen. It's a Dreadnought Guitar. No pickup system with more a natural or possibly satin finish and the kicker is it's only $225.00. This means Chris McKee can buy one with his lunch money. :) I would like to see a review Of an Orangewood guitar where the finish and the pick-up system are not a factor. So the review can focus on the sound of the guitar without the exceptions such as, "It's because of the finish."

So with the gloss finish being the reason you think the sound is dampened acoustically, do you think if I took some of the gloss off, I could gain more of the resonance that it’s missing?

    • @bakillzigs6789
      @bakillzigs6789 2 роки тому

Correction, with the gloss finish being one of the reasons it’s less resonant, would sanding off the gloss help? I can’t help the overbuilt part.

I know im late, but i believe these Orangewood Echo guitars ship with medium 13-56 gauge strings, and this may be hurting the vibration of the top, dampening the sound, and taking the low end out of its projection. I’d be interested to hear the difference.
It took me a while to learn this, but light 12-56 are much more balanced strings, overall.

Nice talk guys, I do disagree with the one statement that laminated neck blocks and scarfs don't make a difference, maybe a bit of a small difference, but equal to other materials and building techniques making tonal subtle tone changes.

I had a Sage Torrified Live that sounded good but muffled and a Brooklyn Jr Live that did not sound good even when plugged in. I was looking for a short scale but the sound on the small ones is not good. They were both heavy and I'd agree with some reviews, overbuilt.

Comparing it to the bob Marley a20, i think the lack of resonance in this guitar would probably be from the bridge pins. Put some nicer bone bridge pins in it (cheap and easy) and it will probably be much louder and project much more sound.

Check out the highland collection .I have a sage mahogany live. Best sounding, feeling playing guitar I've owned. Great tone and protection in the mahogany range (mainly mids). Satin finish all solid wood , comes with 12s (Ernie balls), dynamite deluxe case. 995.00 with accessory kit 2-3yrs ago. Lr baggs pick up. Love it but extra 300$. Never felt heavy to me. I think grand auditorium or concert size. Played and sounded great juiced or not(plugged). Cutaway elect/access no holes in the solid wood except for soundhole. I felt that I had stepped up a level or class of guitar from min one. In other words for me I was playing a guitar that was out of my normal league
Better than d18 felt for me. Compares to guild m20 I think or whatever the guild mahagony that Nick drake played or put his name on.

I've returned two Orangewoods so far (a $250 Morgan that was not setup and a $400 Mason that just didn't sound good). Y'all mention Yamaha and at this point I'd go with a similarly priced Yamaha over one of these. It would be interesting for y'all to review one of Orangewood's new $1k guitars. I'm gonna do it one day but I'd really like to see channels that don't get paid to review them to give it a shot first. :)

Surely Yamaha is more consistent in quality and has a ton more experience on Acoustics. I have a couple of Yamaha acoustics and they're great. Same for Cort Guitars, they're amazing quality for the price, especially the Gold Series, but I've had many of their lower priced series and they are great quality, no neck angle problems over time... On Orangewood I dislike completely their headstock and overall design

See "ua-cam.com/video/188V8tW5fug/v-deo.html" from Driftwood Guitars review of the higher end Orangewood All-Solid Wood "Ava" ($1k).

Just returned a Mason Live, which I bought on sale for $355, which also crapped out after 2 days. Started buzzing on all strings throughout the neck. Shady construction IMHO if the neck starts going apeshit after a couple of days.
To give them credit, they refunded it with no questions asked and pretty expediently.

L have an "echo" 12 string. Compared to my 30 year old Guild D-40, there is a fall in projection. I build, and what bugs me is the decal headstock. There is no excuse for that, It is heavy but a fine , projection, especially for a 12 atring under $3500

You keep talking about the dampened or muted tone of the guitar, but you don’t realize that it is the mid range that has been scalloped out of this guitar and if you are a singer songwriter that is perfect you have your low end and you have your high end, your voice is in the middle there so that’s what you want for a singer songwriter , now if you were just playing instrumental I can understand your issue with the mid range being scalloped out

Personally love my Orangewood Mason TS. Same guitar, but Grand Auditorium. I bought it because it plays well for its price, and I have a tonewood amp which alters the sound and adds volume. This combination is amazing at this price point, and the resonance isn't an issue for me. I'm was a little disappointed with the TS. Yet, I love the darker color. I also enjoy taking this out of the house. So for my purposes, I'ts great. Also, this is perfect for practicing my finger-picking in my apartment complex.

There's a time and place for buying guitars online, but acoustics aren't it. They're organic and there's too much variation even between guitars of the same model. I played 2 Taylor 324ce back to back and the difference was surprising even though they're theoretically exactly the same. Same materials, same build month. Heck, they might even have been made from the same bits of tree.
But one was noticeably better than the other in terms of resonance and sound.
I'd argue its less of a worry for electric guitars. If you've played one MIM Fender Strat (random example), you've played them all. If there's any difference in them in sound (which I've never experienced), its nothing a tiny EQ tweak on the amp won't cancel out.

I have a mahogany Rey(the lowest priced model) I bought used that is really a decent guitar. Thin satin finish, thinner bracing, and I play it daily.
I wanted a pickup, so I ordered a Morgan Mahogany live... it was horrible! Thick finish, clunky bracing, and sounded D E A D!!!
Needless to say, it went back and they refunded my money...
If you have a student or a child needing a guitar to learn to play on, order the Rey for $145 instead.

Hopefully they will address this on their 2 newer All Solid Wood series guitars before too long. Time will tell.
