  • I modify the NEW E-Flite UMX Radian Ultra-Micro powered glider by extending the wingspan by 300mm. The popular UMX Radian Ultra-Micro powered glider by E-Flite has been upgraded with SAFE Select making it even easier to fly than before. Since this glider is under 250 grams, FAA registration is not required. It binds to your DSMX/DSM2 compatible transmitter. Other than that, all that's required is a 1S 150-220mah lipo battery. With a compatible transmitter, the receiver will provide telemitry on in flight battery voltage. It can even be flown indoors in a gymnasiums or large indoor space.

    Cool mod! I did a video on my split wing mod for easier travel/packing. I was also weighing the idea of extending the wing but was not sure about the final lift-to-drag ratio. Your tests are conclusive!

      Thanks for watching. Recommend not covering the wing as I did. Adds a bit to much weight. I’m going to do another wing without the covering. I may use a bit of poly-safe paint… very thin, enough to add a bit of color.

      @@MyRCChannel-CJScott Yes, weight is definitely the main constraint on that little UMX!

    Nice mod dude. I've been building planes like this with the FENIX gliders (epp foam chuck gliders). It's pretty much the same thing you did - clip off the one end of the polyhedral and connect the two together. I figured I'd do the same thing by default with the Radian but it's nice to see someone else do it first :)
    I wish there was a way to find out the thrust data on the stock motor with the gearbox. I've thought about using an AEO C10 motor (8 grams, up to 128grams of thrust) on a modified Radian. Granted it's not geared and would have to get another folding prop perhaps but it'd be able to climb in no time and just cut throttle and float.
    I'm also curious if the stock receiver/esc combo's esc is ONLY for brushed motors (such as the stock motor UMX Radian comes with)? I know some rare boards will support both brushed and brushless, in which case an AEO C05 motor would be a perfect single cell for this plane.

    With some experience and practice
    when the wind picks up just drop the nose just a little then it will move forward and if your in a thermal the plane will go up without adding power , I don't honestly see the need to lengthening the wing, I can stay up for nearly 30min on a 220 mah 1s battery.

      It wasn't a NEED, it was an EXPERIMENT. Not everyone lives in a thermal rich environment. Many people live in urban areas where it's hard enough finding a place to fly, let alone someplace with favorable weather conditions.
      I'm glad you're enjoying your Radian.

    I have owned several UMX Radians, and love to fly them in the wind. It is a real gas. Frankly, I always felt the flexibility of the wing is it's strength. It only bounces around in the air and is a great teacher in reacting to air currents. While it is a great exercise in modification, I don't think it is really necessary as it is capable of 25-to-30-minute flights as is with 200 mah batteries. I would be interested in seeing it's weight when mods are completed, hopefully at the end of the video.

    Interesting concept, I hope it works.

      Yep! I looks promising... I just can't leave well enough alone :-)

    Great instructional video.
    But why didn’t you use colored packing tape from Home Depot or whatever instead of Parklite??

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  Рік тому

      Tape would be way to heavy. Check out the later videos… I redo this mod and only use a bit of polycarbonate safe paint to add some color. Even the Parklite film adds to much weight.

    If you're covering it ,use esaki tissue and a glue stick shrink with 50 percent isopropyl alcohol and water.colord packing tape at the dihedral joints.

      Thanks for the info... I'll have to try that sometime. I'm seriously going to make a document with your suggestion and research up some links and vendors so I'll have it for later. I'm going to leave this glider as is... maybe a sprits of paint on the underside of the wing to increase visibility. It's a great fun flyer.

    What type of glue should be used for repairs? Thanks for the reply

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  8 місяців тому

      There are foam specific glues, but I’ve had problems with them. Epoxy will never attack foam and will always bond. Use sparingly because large quantities of epoxy generate heat as they set up. Thin layers of quick setting epoxy are best; 5min & 15 min are best.
      Thanks for watching,

    • @MyRCChannel-CJScott
      @MyRCChannel-CJScott  8 місяців тому

      @@gianluca387 Yep, that was the one that gave me trouble too. Go with 5-15 minute epoxy. I find that if you mix it longer you get a stiffer setup and if you mix it less, you get a more flexible joint. I also mix epoxy with micro-balloons… glass micro balloons as a filler. It makes a lighter combination that fills gaps well.

      @@MyRCChannel-CJScott Hi, good news, the depron glue worked in the end, it just took a whole night to set!!
      I flew there even in fairly strong winds and had no problems.
