    Hi Tim - Got one a couple of weeks ago, though before your post. You had recommended I seek a local club and get some newbie supervision. Had no clue where to find a club, but I stumbled on an acquaintance who happens to have 30+ years of RC experience, and he recommended the Radian for the same reasons you have cited. In a couple of sessions I've gained a lot of confidence and actually flown some without crashing. I'm tickled with the plane and agree with your comments.

    Looks pretty neat as backyard flyer. Especially the slow speed. Was actually looking for a 4 channel plane , as a beginner. Very nice videos, Tim.

    Tim, I love the Radian and your videos. I recently bought a Micro umx conscendo with flaperons and spoilerons. I'm excited about the power the new plane has but I dont think I have a transmitter that easily incorporates the features of this glider?
    I hope your doing well and if you need me to send you a conscendo I will :) ! I'd just like your take on the glider and set up as an intermediate flyer!! Thank you for your videos!

    Hi there, Tim: Just catching up with this video (even though it has been out for a year now). I have flown (and lost) three of the UMX Radians. Yes, they are fun, but like all small foamies / park flyers, they are best for light wind and keeping them close. They thermal well... maybe a bit TOO well, if you know what I mean :( So all in all, agree with your assessment that they are a pretty darn good starter plane, and they are so small you can keep it in the car and fly it whenever you see a park / soccer field somewhere.
    I actually DO think they are going to be around for a while because, since they are only offered as a bind-n-fly and don't have a PNP version, so... if you do buy a Radian, you are going to beed to buy a Spektrum transmitter. And I think it is fair to say that while Spektrum radios are convenient, if you want a trnasmitter you can "grow" with, you are going to need to drop $350 on a six-channel NX6 transmitter. (You MIGHT be able to find a used Gen 3 DX6 for less on ebay though.) I have a DX6E that works "pretty well" but I do with it had a lot of the features on the DX6. I guess the other thing people can do if they want to try out this sport on the cheap is look for a used "Bat Wing" transmitter that came included with some of HH / Spektrum ready to fly kits. They work... more or less. Just the range is limited. Or look for a used DX5e as they have decent range and the reciever in the UMS Radian is backward-compatible with the DSM2 protocol used in those DX5e Radios.
    Anyway, my point was that they probably WILL keep making them for a while since they are a way for Horizon Hobby to get people to buy into the Spektrum family of products.

    Tim, So it's OK to stand inside the flite line as a beginner :) lol. Just some safety humor, we all do that when we fly alone. Tim, it's all ways good to have a spotter. This is for your reader that read the comments. For I am a AMA IP instructor.

      Doyle: Guilty as charged! Agree, be careful when flying alone. You could get injured at any time, although with the Radian that would be an achievement. The little prop is not much of a worry. 😁 Tim

    Can I fly this with a tbs tango 2 with a multi protocol module. Love your review was thinking of buying it. I already have the tango 2 transmitter and a multi protocol module for the drones I fly. so was wondering if I can use that or do I need to invest in a new transmitter to fly this.

    Hi Tim, do you have a video or link that shows how you turned your wings yellow? Not sure if they can be pained or if that's some kind of covering. The wife and I have some difficulty seeing it and she suggested changing it to yellow. Retired May 1st and bought this plane after seeing your video. Just got into the hobby and the wife and I are enjoying it very much. Even got the kids and grandkids involved. It's really a relaxing hobby and great for conversations at family gatherings. Family even bought me another plane when I retired. Up to 4 now.

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  2 роки тому

      We4fm: What a great note and welcome to the hobby! While I do not have a video on this, you can use low heat, iron on covering for these foam models. Any covering with "Lite" somewhere in the name should work. Use a low iron setting and test first. I covered several foam models with iron on covering to include the Timber. Works really well. Just be super careful with weight on these smaller models, both total weight and CG location. That is why I covered just the Radian wings. If I added the covering to the tail, would have been way too tail heavy. Tim

      @@TimMcKay56 thank you, thank you, thank you! You made my wife very happy Tim. Going to give coverings a try and will follow your suggestions on weight and all. Would you have any suggestions on where to buy the coverings? I'm not sure on the exact name of the coverings. Thanks again for your quick response and all your help!

    I agree that the radian is a good first plane, my son and I would not have gotten into RC without park fliers. But I don't think the best small trainer is out there right now: brushless pusher, 600mm+ wingspan, self-leveling gyro RTF, convertible to 4ch, about $100. Newbies always forget to cut the throttle, and props and motors get damaged on pullers. The mini aeroscout could have been the best, but it's a disappointment. The AeroScout 1.1m is the best large trainer, IMO, awesome.

      Mike: No worries, any video on the "Best RC trainer" is always by definition a bit "tongue in cheek." Tim

    • @1mikeb
      @1mikeb 2 роки тому +1

      @@TimMcKay56 You didn't bite... I was hoping YOU would make my perfect trainer!😀 You are 90% there with your modified mini AeroScout. All it needs is an As3x SAFE 4ch micro receiver. The reason I like the pusher plane is, I've dodged a few park fliers, and even a little spinning prop hurts.

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  2 роки тому +2

      @@1mikeb Mini AeroScout is OK, but I work a LOT harder than I should to fly that sucker. Radian just a lot easier to fly, plus it flies a lot slower than the Scout. To each their own! Tim

    I had one of these and it was not a very good experience. The stabilization feature was very twitchy and the plane was hard to control. Second or third flight the rudder went full right and it went in nose first and actually damaged the prop. Nothing I could do after that would get the rudder to do anything but flip into full right turn after powering up and activating the stabilization. Obviously defective. I'd hesitate to buy another one.
