    Colossus is not powered by Megapack batteries. It's powered off the grid and the batteries help stabilize the current to ensure short term peak draw requirements are met.

    I once worked for a large company in a facility that had an interesting design. The building was on a giant slab, but the datacenter was carved into the center of the slab. It had the traditional air conditioning system just for the datacenter, but since it was in the middle of the building, needed its own drain for condensate. One day a reportedly disgruntled employee flushed multiple tampons and a t-shirt down the toilet, stopping up the system. Being backed up, raw sewage would, of course, end up in the lowest drain in the building.... I came in and did my evening checks (I worked evening shift) and when I walked into the datacenter I nearly vomited from the smell. I pulled up a floor tile adjacent to a server rack and was greeted by the site of a turd floating by. Let's hope Elon's design team did a better job with their facility!

      Wow! You Kids... Grok (/ˈɡrɒk/) is a neologism coined by American writer Robert A. Heinlein for his 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land. While the Oxford English Dictionary summarizes the meaning of grok as "to understand intuitively or by empathy, to establish rapport with" and "to empathize or communicate sympathetically (with); also, to experience enjoyment",[1] Heinlein's concept is far more nuanced, with critic Istvan Csicsery-Ronay Jr. observing that "the book's major theme can be seen as an extended definition of the term."[2] The concept of grok garnered significant critical scrutiny in the years after the book's initial publication. The term and aspects of the underlying concept have become part of communities such as computer science.

    Memphis gave the largest tax breaks. Like a lot of large companies - in order to get them to build in your area or to set-up shop - you have to GIVE them something.
    The most impressive thing about another massive supercomputing center is the SPEED that Musk and Co. set it up. It normally takes an average of 4 years, but this was done in something like 19 days. That is super human.

    • @OldPannonian

      @@OldPannonian I didn't say Elon Musk wasn't high-functioning. My point was that he chose Memphis over Austin based on several criteria, one of which was the generous tax breaks.
      If you re-read what I said - I pointed out that it was superhuman to put this large computer system project together in 19 days as compared to the usual 4 years that others take.
      The problem that I see with our system is one where like Walmart - tax breaks are demanded for doing business in the community, which often needs the tax revenue to help the old and poor.
      To me that is an ethical dilemma that neither government nor these corporations care to address.

    • @schrodingerscat1863

    • @npip99
      @npip99 15 днів тому +4

      @@jeffthompson1869 A tax break isn't "giving" anything, it's just "taking" less.
      It's a win-win, Tennessee gets more jobs, higher wages, money flows in.
      Especially because southern states like Tennessee often have many low-wage jobs, people who work low-wage jobs take more from the government than they pay in taxes. Datacenters, even with tax breaks, will bring in high earning technicians who can pay more in taxes than they take, helping the old and poor.

    • @jeffthompson1869
      @jeffthompson1869 15 днів тому

      @@npip99 Then why does the amount of money going into a local government run less than if the thing isn't built? That has been the experience with Walmart. On top of that the wages are low enough that people can apply for and get SNAP benefits so that they can eat.
      In theory, what you are saying sounds fine. In reality, it usually does not work out that way.
      Since Ronald Reagan - with ebbs and flows - the amount of money going into the Federal Government with tax breaks for big corporations - has led to the highest deficit in our history.
      Enough taxes need to be raised - from everybody - to pay for the services of government.
      That is one of the primary functions of the House of Representitves - tax and fund government.
      Local government are much more restricted in borrowing money - they just cut services.

For anyone wondering, the teddy bear was an image I made in Grok as something fun to do with my 2 year old daughter (we create lots of random images for fun). The 91 you see, is me using a load of Grok images I generated, for testing the Grok prompt limit on image analysis, to see if it was any different to normal prompts. i.e 1 attach image, 2 attach image, 3 attach image etc... I'm happy to inform you, there is no difference in limits between prompts, image analysis, or image generation, so you can do 100 of these every 2 hours on Premium subscription (50 for each model), or 200 of these every 2 hours on Premium+ subscription (100 for each model). Which technically allows you to make 1200/2400 uses of Grok (depending on your Premium subscription) in a 24 hour period.

    if you don't get the joke, Elon likes video games and a famous one from back in the day was "Shadow of Colossus". In this case, the shadow is the AGI that he is being forced to make because of the un-regulated industry. In the video game the shadow was associated to the antagonist called Dormin (Nimrod backwards) which is a malevolent entity that corrupts a noble quest (that of the protagonist - The Wanderer (you)) to resurrect your fallen love (Mono). Basically Dormin manipulates you to collect his shadowy fragments and resurrect himself. Nimrod on the other hand is biblical in nature and is a person associated with rebellion. Kind of alluding to the fact that AGI is a pandoras box of a sort and while we fathom at the Colossus we can see and leverage for our benefit, the shadow resides within with unknow, and un-awakened intentions.
    Or... I'm just who smoked a bit too much and now your googling it. But you have to admit, after you google it and understanding Elon's background with video games... Doesn't it make you curious? :)

    Also, i'm surprised that with the ammount of engineers Tesla has, they did not think of using UPS systems to filter out noise on their electrical grid, yes, batteries are noise eficcient, DC is king, yes, so are UPS that convert AC to DC for their batteries and then take that DC and convert that back into AC for their servers. This is how you filter noise and fluctuation from the grid. I have the feeling this video is missing some key engineering facts and falling into assumptions.

    I believe the video is wrong when it said that the megapacks are there to protect the system from glitches from the grid. (Monsters from the ID?)
