The first synth I ever saw was an SH-1000 that belonged to my music teacher in 1978 and i just got one of my own. It sounds FANTASTIC!! So much bite in the sound!! And the random note is still just as much fun now as it was back then. Mine only needs a couple of minor things to make it perfect (like a good cleaning!) and I think it will be a mainstay in my studio!

I found my one on the street. Someone had thrown it out when moving. So I quickly snapped it up. Great vid, I'm happy to know everything this synth does.. I must dust it off and have a go my self.. cheers.

I bought one of these when they first came out from John Shin's in Leigh, we were the first band in the area to have a synth, and boy we were the only band that could do Silver machine with any cred. I got a minimoog after that but I still miss the sh 1000.

@sharethehouse Unfortunately, the SH-1000 was manufactured in 1973, nearly a decade prior to MIDI. What it does have is CV/gate. You could probably get it retrofitted for MIDI somewhere but that's quite costly and the experienced technicians are scarce (unless you feel comfortable with a soldering iron). Also, there are converters out there but again, they'll cost you an arm and a leg.

i had an sh 1000, and the other kid in school has a minikorg, which always sounded WAY fatter...but i had sample & hold -
Hmmm - is there an affordable keyboard today that sounds fat like the minikorg, but has sample & hold & modifiable filters, etc like the SH?

This was my first analog synt. I bought it in 1992 for 100 dollars or so. Liked it a lot then and when I see this video I actually start to miss it. Not sure if it would fit my music nowadays but at the time it was perfect.
    Niceness.

Great review! The Roland SH-1000 was my very first analog synthesizer. I picked it up used at a musical flea market in 1988 for $50! I used it for demo recordings and jams for a few years before it was accidently knocked off its stand and busted up! I sold the pieces to a neighbor for $25. The SH-1000 was a simple and fun instrument. I wish I still had it!

HAve there ever been any issues with the synth falling out of tune?? Heres what Im saying...if I want to do a full octave step from middle C to High C, the High C is not actually a C...I have to go from mid C to B# so it sounds right. somewhere in the octave a note is missing. adjusting the pitch knoband the tune dial on the back of the machine doesnt help. Any ideas about this? I try letting the machine warm up, but still no difference. THANKS

For its time, the SH-1000, was an amazing Synth, I even saw one being used by none other than Brian Eno in an early Roxy Music video. The filter sweep effects are great, put one through some effect pedals and just listen, Synth heaven. If it was the turkey that some people claim it is, why are we even talking about it. This was Roland's first commercial Synthesiser, 1973. I love the graphics on it too!

in my haste to post this is mistakenly typed B# above...it should just be "B". it's a halt step off I guess. So if I wanted to play a mid B to high B octave, Id play Mid B to high B-flat. Its really annoying. maybe my 350 bucks was NOT well spent.

Haha heeey there! :) Well i picked up an old sh-1000 in a tiny music shop yesterday. Pristine external condition, used, but was told it worked perfectly. Took it home and it doesn't. Not sure if this is even a question anymore as i've pretty much identified that yes, there are wiring issues. The Envelope control just doesn't seem to affect the sound at all. Some of the paddles aren't flappin how they should, and whenever i press a key it sort of warbles and stutters like it has a delay on it, but a fuzzy glitchy delay. .... This isn't a question is it :( Sorry. It was a question yesterday but now it's just a sad realisation.
If you have any tips on getting it fixed then ... i'd appreciate that, ha. But if not, no worries and happy valentines! haha.

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  9 років тому +1

+OzzyOwlis +OzzyOwlis I think that the only problem I had with mine was the power source. But power sources can cause a lot of problems other than not providing power, and are often responsible for a number of issues.
The Envelope sliders aren't working, even when you choose the paddle setting? That sounds like a repair. :(
It definitely sounds like it needs the key contacts cleaned!
As for the paddles... That sounds like a mechanical problem... I hope it can be fixed with cleaning!
Watching this video makes me miss the one I had. I might have to reacquire!

Sounds very similar to the Commodore 64.
The 64, with its SID synthesizer, trumps the Roland because more freely available, is cheaper, has more of a cult following and all the software you need to get the most from it is still downloadable.
And to cap that off you can plug one of the many MIDI cartridges available, for example the Sonus or Moog and now teh MSSIAH MIDI sequencer cartridge that's out.
