I’ve had mine for 25 years and I will never sell it. It was manufactured the same year I was born :) I think the filter is amazing with a warmth and very nice resonance. The one oscillator but with combination functionality can sound really phat! A bit of processing, a delay and reverb and this synth reaches the skies. The presets however are more like toys...

Kindof, but it is analogue and not digital so I guess it has a bit more warmth. Would recommend Soulsby Atmegatron for that :)

I bought one of these brand new in 1973, and haven't seen one since. I wish you would have spent more time digging in rather than make fun of it. I got a lot of cool sounds out of it which worked in a lot more songs than you would have thought. I can't remember what I did with it, but it was very cool to see it again anyway.

This was my first synth in the mid 70's. I vastly underestimated it at the time, because it wasn't a minimoog, but actually it was a remarkable little synth, and with a little delay and chorus, it sounded awesome. I miss it and would love to get one again some day.

Reminds me of my Moog Satellite with it's flip up/down switches, but you have lots of knobs to twiddle with :)

My all-time favourite synth! I've had two of them. Sadly I had to sell the first to pay the rent during college. The second was destroyed by an inept tech. Grrr. One of these days I'll grab a third, forever keeper version.
Love the videos. Keep 'em coming!

  • @daviesch

I own one, and I simply adore it. I think you will too. Despite having just one oscillator, it can sound fat, but I tend to run it through a Boss CE-300 chorus to thicken it up even more (without straying from that classic Roland sound).
The filter is a -24db/oct diode ladder design, quite similar to the EMS VC3, and it sounds amazing. The filter always tracks the keyboard, except on some of the presets, so it can be used as a second oscillator when self-oscillating, to create some tuned FMish sounds. However, like other ladder filters (including Moog's), It does suffer from a volume drop on the low end as resonance increases,
IMO, the best preset is the bass guitar. It doesn't quite come through in the video, unfortunately, but it is killer. The other presets are ok (they aren't entirely useless), and they can be altered using the tremolo, vibrato, growl, and wah settings. The cool thing is that the parameters for each preset are programmed using a diode matrix, which is easily hackable, so the adventurous can open their SH1000's and make their own presets.

Warning to all people who own this synthesizer or who want to buy one: PLEASE remember that those colored flip switches are made of a very brittle type of plastic.
If they snap off, know, that there is NO GLUE in existance that can glue those tabs back on ....!!! The ONLY cure is to buy a new one and replace it.
These tabs are about 45 years old.......... Good luck finding one............
Again, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!
(I owned an SH1000 and yes... I snapped one off. I tried ALL types of glue and NOTHING worked. Nothing. And no glue even offered a hint of a grip..... I threw the synth away. It hardly produced any sound, anymore. Way too expensive to have it repaired, also... Maybe I should have kept the thing. But hey... it was years before Internet existed....)

I still have mine with music stand and flight case. I modded it with a CV in/out and added a pulse width modulation to the osc which back in the day was phat! One thing is that it kept in tune far better than the mini moog. :D

Wonderful to hear some of those sounds again.
I owned one for about 10 years back in the day.
Incredibly versitile , add a reverb and echo and the universe is the limit.
Used on Dar Side Of The Moon.

Hello, Dr. Mix,- greetings from the dark winter of Scandinavia.
Thoroughly enjoying all of your presentations of all of the vintage synths from my youth in the late 70s and up through the 80s.
I remember all of those hits that were made with these fantastic machines,- from the the early Tangerine Dream, Roxy Music and the Popcorn hit over Vangelis to Madonna and the entire British New Romantics movement of Duran Duran, Eurhythmics and Depeche Mode etc.
The fun part is that I don´t play the piano,- I´m a Metal guitar player!
However, if I ever want any of these old fantastic sounds in my music I now know where to look for which DAW plugins to buy and then use your demonstrations as a guideline to making them sound right,- good deal! :)
So,- thank you,- fun, educating and entertaining.
You of course have yourself a new subscriber.

Great video and great performance. 👍 In 1973 I saw ELP live. I called my music shop and said: I need a synthesizer. They said: we have a Roland SH1000 for 1000 DM. I bought it immediatly ( how naive) and quickly realised: it doesn't sound like a Moog. So I collected all my money and bought a Minimoog in Hamburg for 5000 DM! I still have the Roland today. It is like new. But I love my (now) two Minimoogs. Modified, I can control both devices with one. What a sound! Many greetings.

Fun fact: The first synthesizer I played on a recording was one of these Roland SH-1000s, along with a Crumar string synth. My bandmate had a lot of fun gear back in 1998. The SH-1000 is a lot of fun for something so simple.

I'm soo exited. I´ve been waiting a long time for someone to go deep with the fat sounds this Roland bad boy can do.
This cool synt made the magic bassound used in the world wide megahit "Just an illusion" by the famous disco/pop/funk group called Imagination.
It would be amazing if you Claudio could recreate the fat bass used in almost every Imagination hit song. I think the bass sound was going thru a Boss chorus aswell.

Looking back several decades, I have always found electronic instruments trying to "emulate" acoustic instruments somewhat ... _lacking._ Moog did not make this mistake. They just offered a synth doing what it does. Roland and especially Yamaha Electone home organs have been littered with false promises of "saxophone", "flute" and, most dreadfully of all, "piano" tones that they *never* delivered. What a weird way to sell a product.

I fixed a Diode ladder filter PCB mounted board on one of these 3 years ago and it was hell removing all the resin gloop the board was dipped in at manufacturing. To my surprise about 8 diodes were dead but after the board was cleaned up and repopulated with new components the synth sounded so sweet again for the customer.

I just got this synth.. for free, due to my step sisters father passing. I never met the man, but I expect we'd have got on due to our common interest in synthesis and electronic music. Not only did he leave this behind, but also a real to real tape deck with two reels of tape in boxes, one labelled with recording of the moon landing. My dad tried to have a go with the synth but couldn't get a sound out of it. So I acquired it from him and opened it up and cleaned all the contacts and hey presto, it works! The sound is great. It's exactly what I've been dreaming of for years. A real analog synth 🧡

I don't sweeten you but you are one of my favorite UA-camrs :) Thanks for great contents.
