Got Chattanooga to 5 years after that and the museum wasn't opened. Thanks for putting up the video. Chatt is a really cool town that has been "revived" - praise the lord!

    My "second car" was a 1970 C30 with a Holmes 660 split boom. First job, 1975, 16 years old towing in the evenings. Cool truck, had cherry bombs, a 350, and a big stack of 4x4s for cribbing up bumpers so the valence panels didn't get mashed in. Cool tour, thanks.

    Wow, just stumbled upon your video of the very nice tour of the tow museum. Thank you. Never been there but have known about it for years. I am an old "Tow Dog" who has towed and recovered many a vehicle over the years with all types of equipment. Whether slinging and short chaining, to roll backs, to stingers. You name it, I've done it. Best part was recoveries and rescuing people. I am a certified tower through the IITR. A very dangerous job where there were many close calls. Everytime I would get a call for a vehicle broken down on the highway it was like going into a battlezone. Had cars go by me at high rates of speed just inches from me. If there was a wreck blocking all lanes it's your job to clear that highway quickly and effortlessly. So a salute to all my tow brothers who have given their lives doing this dangerous but necessary job.

      Oh wow very cool George, so glad you enjoyed the tour/video! Yes, that is a VERY dangerous job in which (most of) the general public doesn't even realize. It's truly amazing how the manufacturer's in the day spared no expense when building the older trucks. Huge front grills with rounded chrome bumpers. Massive flared fenders with long running boards. It was simple, but very elegant. Even the interior was clean and uncluttered. You really don't see that in vehicles today. Most vehicles , cars and trucks pretty much look a like. It became more about how to make it cheap and garner the most profits than style and quality. A lot of those trucks in that museum have been around for a long time. You won't see to many vehicles today be around in 60 or 70 years. Have a safe weekend.

    I used to ride the wreckers and hang at my uncle Kenny’s garage all summer, RIP uncle Kenny, he had two 72’ Fords both packing built 428’s and Holmes 440’s and through a set of header’s you’d have thought a stock car was coming. Thanks for the vid brother, great stuff. The Autocar and Mack were definitely my faves too, love the HD trucks. I’m thinking about buying a 77’ DM800 Mack to pull low boys with. 300 Mack motor, Tri-Plex 15 speed and #65,000 lb bogies and a #25,000 lb front axle she’s a beast.

    Here is a interesting fact some of your viewers might like. In the 70's my Dad and I spotted this "" towing apparatus "" in Florida for sale. It was equivalent to the red boom "'" 55 seconds "" into your video, but, it was on a double axle. You would then TOW it behind your truck. This guy who invented it, built it during his spare time at work. When he went to patent it, his place of employment told him it belonged to THEM since he built it on their time, not on HIS time. My Dad never did buy it for some reason which I forget. Never have seen one since. Just a boom on a axle (2) that you would tow.

    It sounded quite romantic and very befitting that you and your wife spent 8 hours in a tow-truck museum. The reason why I say so is because as a couple spend their lives together, there will be times when one will depend on the support of the other and will need to be pulled-up emotionally and mentally or perhaps, 'towed-up' would be the better word. From time to time, one half of the relationship will need to set-down the law and other made to tow the line. May you both continue to have many more years of happiness!

    We were visiting family in northern Alabama two weeks ago and we did a road trip to the Tow Truck Museum.
    We weren’t there quite as long as you, but there certainly is a lot to see. Being in the business, I have wanted to visit for quite some time. Very informative video.

      I had gotten out of towing a couple of years ago after doing it for over 25 years. I worked for only 1 company and started at the bottom, working my way up to finally driving heavy, which I did for the last 16 years. I loved the work and met many great people along the way. The company I worked for was sold about a year before I got out. We were bought by another company, but kept as a separate entity. The parent company had a very difficult time keeping employees so when they couldn’t find their driver’s, the workload got passed to our company, which really confused customers, and burned me out. When we were bought out, all of our seniority was gone. After having 3 weeks vacation, I was knocked back to only 1 week, plus many other problems. I loved the work and to this day, I miss it. Sometimes. Sometimes the hours were long and it was difficult on my family. To keep in it a little, I am looking into finding an early Ford F-350 with a Holmes 440 or 480 wrecker bed on it and restoring it. This is what I learned to tow with and I think it would be fun to restore one and relive some memories of my earlier days.

    • @THROTTLEPOWER
      @THROTTLEPOWER  2 роки тому +1

      @@stevenw1005 Oh wow, I don't think that's right (when a co buys a co out) to basically treat the existing employees bad, as taking away earned vacation, etc, etc, etc. Hearing that really upsets me...... Picking up an early F-350 with a 440 or 480 would be really cool to restore Steven! Especially since that is what you started off with back in the day... 🙂👍

    An excellent video and commentary of this equally excellent TOW TRUCK MUSEUM. I really enjoyed every second of it.
    I love going to museums, particularly anything to do with motor vehicles, especially truck museums. You have a good wife that comes with you to a tow truck museum. You must’ve bribed her with something special. (I always have to bribe mine, which can be costly at times. 😊)

    Stumbled on this place several years ago on vacation! My wife wasn’t possessing nearly as much excitement as I, so I dropped her at the motel to nap while my son and I explored the history of hooking! I found it much more impressive than Rock City! Ha! It’s a really well done museum with an incredible sampling of equipment from several eras! The three hours that we were there, we were the only folks present, so I’m not sure I agree with your declaration that it’s “a happening place”, but it’s well worth the trip! As I recall, my favorite piece was that old Army wrecker! Large, in charge, and just dripping with mechanical intrigue! This is my first visit to your channel, and I’m wondering if you’re the same Throttle Power that comments frequently on Minnesota Max’s UA-cam channel? Long time sub to him, and subbing to you now! Great tour!
