dont forget its not a fully built 3cyl either!! literally stock bottom end, stock head, stock studs!!! how insane is the engineering of this gryaris!!!
The fact that a factory head gasket is good for 500hp on a 3cyl engine is fucking insane. Hats off to Toyota for not cutting corners where it really matters.
Ahh yes, comparing a 40 thousand dollar car with some upgrades to a 1.7 million dollar car. I’m sure if we tossed 1.7 million into the GR, the engine can reliably produce 600 hp too. Koenigsegg is awesome for their innovations, but Toyota did an amazing job with this platform as well, while keeping it affordable which in itself requires some impressive engineering.
Hahaha, oh man I did laugh when you were talking about the potential noise the dog gears were going to make and then you fire it up and instantly there’s an offensive amount of noise through the cabin from the fuel pump. So much noise you can barely make out what you are saying over it. I don’t think the gearbox is going to bother you if that fuel pump doesn’t
would have been great to have put the head on a flow bench. just to see the numbers. That aside. have really enjoyed this project. a true testament to just how good OEM performance platforms are these days. Few brave souls would consider putting 30+PSI of boost through an unopened 4A-GZE...

Very impressive achieving 500hp out of a 1.6 L 3 cylinder by only changing the camshaft and the turbo setup. My question though is how long can the engine last at that power level as compared to stock?
It would be interesting to see how Vibrant performance ultra silent resonators would effect the performance, I really like the way the remove drone from the exhaust Whilst allowing for high flow. I highly rate them after owning way to many loud cars.
I absolutely have to echo what has been said below, as far as Toyota factory turbo engines go, this wee' iron clad 3 cylinder ripper is the best thing the factory has served up to the tuning community since the 2jz - big call but full bravery awards all round to the lads - once passed 450hp (crank not at the wheels) on the dyno, I'd be sticking fingers in my ears waiting for a piston to disintegrate or a rod to shear. Apparently - I'd be wrong!
I'm impressed with the performance they were able to get out of it. But the noise coming through the recording on the inside during the street test run is crazy
Andrew what’s the LSD like for normal driving? Did you change any settings or ran it out of the box? I’ve got one on order, will fit in June. In some cars I’ve found the Cusco to be very touchy with small throttle input, requiring either zero or larger throttle openings when exiting roundabouts - although my experience is limited to FR only. Any feedback would be appreciated.
aside from following along with the progress and enjoying all that. Great work on the editting guys! was nice to hear some tunes for the montage rather than just the free elevator music. Can't wait to see this thing on track
Awesome content as always. Damn that yaris is so capable. What do you mean about "learn to drive with a dog box"? From what I have heard, you need to be more decisive with the gear lever and "aim" better.
maaaaan I'd love one and all I'd wanna do for power would be to bring its wheel horsepower up to its stock crank power. I feel like 260 wheel would be a great spot for this.
I just came to comment this.. I tried shazaming it and got no results. The vocals sounds so familiar but I just can't wrap my head around it. Would love to know as well!
Should have just o-ringed the block. There's a tool that you can use to do it with the block still in the car. Will blow through the liner before blowing a head gasket then.
Mentions the gearbox might be loud. Then starts car with a fuel pump louder than any electric car & exhaust so loud he has to almost yell at 2000rpm. 😂 Don't think the gearbox is a worry
Plz plz plz grab up a gr corolla for us over here in the USA. I do know that if it isn’t available for y’all it’s quite similar to the yaris. I do know Toyota gave it 300hp out of the box. Which might just be enough to quell additives.
Ok I might sound stupid but how hard can it be to have an optional sort of pedals/flippers on the steeringwheel so that you can stick when you want but flip and hold hands on the wheel when needed? does this ever exist I just came up with this please be gentle :)
If Toyota doesn't already do they need to make it a crate engine for the market. That would be a great engine swap for a Corolla AE86 to Lotus Elise and many more.
Fuel pumps louder than the gearbox or exhaust.🤔
I think it's the (I assume) camera mic being shitty and not picking up wide frequency range. I hope so anyway 😁
yeah, if that is what it is... its horrible sounding
Ya was going to say that
It literally has no interior, your head would be directly next to it. It's purely a race car at this point, you wouldn't to drive it on the street.

The exhaust is literally the most offensive noise since the last e36 I heard with a strait pipe too.
yea that exhaust sound is horrendous, great wee car though
Those fuel pumps are loud asf.
Louder than the gear set I reckon

Awesome, before moving it on for the competition could you see what the limitations are with the oem ecu with the recent availability of tuning?
I’m surprised how quiet those straight cut gears are. CFD has really improved gear face geometry.
It's cause you can't hear it over the fuel pump and exhaust lol
What are your thoughts on how the cams have affected drive ability and low speed response?
I have EZ cams on mine and they’re fine
I have to say I love your choice in music for your montage!

Look forward to feeding it on the track, don't think that drive was very cohesive to be using the dogbox for quick shifting, a lot of clutch.
That fuel pump noise, is there no light weight solution? Still, nice to know the engines limits.

Gearbox with straight cut gears is surprisingly quiet for a having 2 output shafts. Maybe with stiffer engine/trans mounts that might change.
It has an engine stabiliser.
Its already been over a month, when are we gonna see an on-track test video of this setup??
I want follow up stories on whoever ends up owning this and how it ruins their life :)

There's no synchros in them? So if you can drive a road ranger I guess it's easy.
