Porters and such were often used a lot in industrial parks. They could handle the short and sharp turns and were easier to turn around the whole trains. But they also had many industries connecter in short lines in the same district. Not scattered all over the place. The resources they used may have needed to go a lot farther so used bigger trains and locomotives. I have considered setting up an industry town and just make the longer runs to things like the logging camp, sawmill and mines. Maybe putting the gold industries in another town has well has the refinery.
One of the things i didnt get about this map was the fact you have to pull water the whole way across the map when there is a big lake on the other side as well. I think im going to so similar once i get that far

U could run the train with 2 Porters, one on each end; or just add a 2nd track and "go around" the train.
