I started playing trombone about 8 months ago, and trumpet about a month ago. I like the convenience of the valves, but also like the sound of the trombone. Therefore, I'm thinking of getting a baritone to "complement" the other two. I plan to play it in bass clef, just as I do the trombone, because I will then be playing the actual concert pitch. I'm a 69 y/o who plays other instruments, including the clarinet, so I'll be able the play the same music for trumpet and clarinet (transposing in treble clef) and the same for trombone and baritone (concert pitch in bass clef). I'm not in a band, so I am "free" to choose.

Have you heard of a Trombonium, Flugabone, Valve Trombone or Bass Trumpet? It’ll get you that exact Tbone sound with valves!

Baritone is more like a Cornet, being partially conical. A Trombonium, Valve Trombone, and Bass Trumpet are the valved version of the Trumpet.

A guy in the brass band was able to play on my euphonium with his mouthpiece.

Me who started on trumpet for a year and wanted to try trombone but my band director gave me a baritone instead and later I asked for a baritone to use for the summer and he handed me a Euphonium ( one with 4 valves) and I was like what the heck.

A bit confused about the notes. You played C G C in the treble clef, then Bb F Bb in the bass clef, yet they both played the same notes. Is the euphonium a transposing instrument?

Yes, it is in the key of Bb. Any wind instrument not in the key of C is a transposing instrument.

@@johnray6906 so my alto recorder is in F, also a transposing instrument. Although technically its not right to say its in F

@@LarryShone hi larry! members of the recorder family are NOT transposing instruments (except octave transpositions, which you barely notice!) that's why you have to learn 2 lots of fingerings & 2 clefs. there's been lots of debate about whether or not it should change. i say NO!! john ray and gaming mishaps are NOT correct! eg the trombone, euphonium, & tuba are in Bb, but read at concert pitch in orchestral music, therefore NOT transposing instruments here; what you see on the stave is what comes out. (see a Bb - a Bb comes out!) in brass band music, they can be transposing instruments - ie see a C & a Bb comes out! can be very confusing! just go out & take photos! 🤣🤣🤣
