  • The Best Overdrive Pedal There Is - Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive (And Why)
    Everyone has their favorite piece of gear. This is my favourite overdrive pedal. Some call it a distortion pedal, but I really don't care. It just sounds great to me. I know Yngwie's been known to use the DOD 250 Preamp/Overdrive and the DOD 308 YJM overdrive, but I really do prefer this. Is the difference huge between these three? No.
    I was recently asked why I hadn't reviewed it, if it's my best overdrive pedal, and I had no answer. So now I have reviewed it. Here it is, the Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive pedal.
    Sadly, I've later discovered that Fender have discontinued this pedal, which is a real shame. You can still get it second hand though, so that's always something.

    The gear I most often use.
    A Stratocaster of some kind, either an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, or a custom Strat with a scalloped fretboard. For 7 string stuff I mostly use an Ibanez Universe.
    A Marshall 1987x into a Marshall cab.
    A Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, plus a Boss NS-2 noise gate, or a Strymon Sunset.
    A Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah, and a delay.
    An AKG C-414 mic for the guitar.
    For acoustic stuff I use a Taylor 710 short scale thingy.

    By far the best od-pedal out there. No contest whatsoever.
    I remember however that I didn't enjoy it through my clean channel. At all. So I was disappointed at first. So I went to my semi-clean and after that I just soared into the horizon. Like the mighty eagle and its proud cry 😁

    Personally, I don't have any desire to play exactly like YJM. I like the 1987x, the dimarzio pickups strictly for the sound. The fact that he took a strat and pushed it to it's limit, is amazing. His Live!! album in Brazil is such a great sound. The yellow 250 reissue pedal is the lowest gain of all, to me at least. Really, the amp covers so many styles and works great with any pedal I've tried.

    My friend. You would sound good with any pedal. 😂 Man I wish I could get that sweeping down. I'm practicing. Have never really tried all these years, except little 2 and 3 string stuff. Your sweeps are exactly like Yngwies man. Maybe faster. 😂
    I had the black DOD yngwie over drive and used it for soloing only as a boost for sustain and harmonics and really liked it. My fav though so far has to be the Boss Blues Driver, but there are so many I've not tried. I am going to have to get a secret freq. Made by OCD overdrive company, but has an EQ as well to get that killer Boston or UFO parked wah mids from hell tone I love.

    Reading all the comments and most people have no clue how to use an overdrive for this purpose. Gain set to minimum and volume at max is how it's done. It tightens up the low and mid frequencies and boosts treble.

    Great pedal. Also for me the YJM Overdrive -pedal an important part of my sound. Tough; i use the pedal in a slightly different way. The pedal is also absolutely FANTASTIC -4 tightening high gain amps too. (Thoose travel gigs where You don't have Your own backline; but get a head and 4x12 cab of some sort.) The pedal is so easy to have in the guitar case. Just open the lid: And You're there! I accually have the knobs on the YJM-pedal dialed 12 O'clock with singlecoil guitars. For humbucker guitars i just back down the gain to about 10 O'clock. Have several different rigs: Mainly Marshalls and Boogie Dual Recs. Use the YJM Overdrive with all of them.

      I hear ya. Many players do not like locking trems. Like You; i also play scalloped Strats. And this off course can sometimes cause some tuning issues. That is: If You really want to go downtown on the tremarm. I recently needed a Strat; that could do that. So one was built for me. This guitar totally blew me away! It felt -and sounded like the real deal. The trick was to have the resessed Floyd mounted with woodscrew posts directly into the body wood. Also have a fatter trem/sustain block made out of cold rolled steel. (same material as in orginal Fender tremblocks.) This combination gave basicly the same metallic tone in the guitar -as the standard Fender trem. The YJM has a brass nut. A steel locking nut mounted really snug onto the neck wood -sounds the same. A real 'Hale Mary'. I really didn't think this could be done.

    I never played overdrives as I use the Triaxis or the ADA MP-1 for Thrash/Heavy stuff. But for the "Yngwie sound", you need a "cranked Marshall" baseline" and one of these. You just can get that "Not so much gain, but still great pick attack and..gain" sound elsewhere. I actually like the DOD 250 yellow more (yeah, I know..), but I also like the Fender as well, its a bit more harsh on the tremble BUT has a bit more clarity as well. I think I might get the 308YJM as well for a spin...just because I can, and just because I have to...lol!

    Get your own sound I agree! ☝️Well done I have a Fender Yngwie red pedal I love it for a subtle boost or softer intro. However it really does rip into a slightly dirty 50 watt JCM 900.

    I'm after & have pretty much got my sound down its taken decades to do it but I've got it down always room for improvement though . I don't think any guitarist should be completely happy with their sound & technique , it's a life time process so is getting your own distinct technique that can take up to a decade you have to stop listening to guitarists though, or you'll just become another clone shredder, I mean you as in everybody .Allan Holdsworth said he wanted his sound & to get it he used various effects when I first saw Holdsworth in the early 90's he had to 3 ft racks one clean one for lead, he's the greatest guitarist I & many other have seen, try and copy his solos if you get one down then you are Amazing Eddie Vanhalen said Allan did things with one hand that he couldn't do with two. So back to the point at hand, I remember him saying he wanted to use distortion but didn't want it to sound crunchy & distorted he wanted to " the sustain without that crunchy sound he was totally right he's the greatest guitarist ever in my book. So I tried the same thing, it took so long & so many overdrive pedals, I use the original standard boss overdrive the old ones only had level & gain knobs I'm sure you know the one I mean. The new one I don't like but the old one gives me a silky smooth distortion. It took years though tweaking my marshal I have a greenback celistion quad box with a JCM 800 ,100 watt box. So it's a different sound & im happy with it, it really sounds smooth but you can turn it up to death level & it sounds like a monster, unbelievable pedal & amp combo, but no longer made the same though. If you can get the origanal two knob Japanese boss overdrive get one. Your playing today even though it was a demonstration was awesome man, your my favourite channel you have a good mind & your never boring, remember MORE IS MORE ! PLAY LOUD Ha. PS I've seen yngwie j Malmsteen 4 times, I've heard that he's sound has changed if so its sad his sound was something you have to hear live to understand how good Yngwie is. People who trash him you'll notice they can't do what he does , they can't play fast as Fluck so they pick on him its just jealousy . MORE IS MORE Take care Elmo.

    How does this compare to a 70s grey DOD 250 or the 2013 reissue?

    • @z1g
      @z1g 5 років тому +1

      I have the original DOD 250, the Reissue, and also a DOD YJM modded by analogman to be more like the DOD 250 and a chicago stompworks greyspeck which is a DOD 250(grey box) clone. The Fender I would say is brighter, but I think that is because the 250 and clones darkens the tone a bit. The Fender seems tighter and also seems like it is hotter. The best thing about it is that it does not really alter the original tone it boosts and overdrives it. So if you get a nice slightly dirty tone the Fender will keep those characteristics but put it on steroids.

    • @adrianb23
      @adrianb23 5 років тому +1

      By the way you described the Fender i would think it sounds close(r) to the stock DOD YJM308.

      I would recommend the 2013 reissue sparkly gold DOD 250 as it sounds just like the 70s grey. I have the reissue, a stock DOD 308, and a 308 that i modded with a 1458 IC. They each have their own character and i love all of them.

I don't understand why these people put themselves out there on the Internet. Bear in mind that Yngwie still thinks that his own playing is very good and that his tone has never been better. As anyone with functional ears knows, Yngwie's playing is pretty embarrassing these days.
