There are a few factors in speeding up Macs. One resource I discovered that successfully combines these is the Mels Speed Method (google it if you're interested) definately the no.1 treatment i've seen.look at the interesting info .
Western Digital finally released an external SSD with USB C, but it's expensive ($400 for 1TB). www.wdc.com/products/portable-storage/my-passport-ssd.html Hopefully, the price starts dropping and they also release some standard external hard drives with USB C ports as you say.
I got this device, transferred files from my Mac, then deleted them of my Mac (because I thought they would now be stored on my external hard drive) but once I deleted them from my trash , they are no longer on my hard drive :( does anyone know why this could be ?
Does an external hard drive like this help with computer speed and/or system performance etc.? Or is it pretty much just helpful in the sense you can store data on it?
external drives do not improve pc performance, things that improve pc performance would be cpu, gpu, and ram upgrades as well as any cooling for those wether fan or liquid.
I just bought a WD 1T for my 21.5 iMac to put all new data for 2018. (I have a Omega for all data prior to 2018). My question is do I leave the WD plugged in all the time and on? TM will backup as stated. Or should I eject and backup myself once a week? (Opening up TM and WD hard drive) All videos I have watching nerve says about leaving all on all the time. Thanks. Linda
+birdie2107 You can do either. A lot of people like the convenience of always keeping the drive plugged into their computer so that they don't have to remember to manually start the Time Machine backup process. Other people like to store the drive that has the Time Machine backup in a different location like at a friend's house in case something happens to the computer at home. This means that every week (or however often one does a TM backup) they go to their friend's house, pick up the drive, go home, do the TM backup, then return the drive to their friend's house. An external hard drive will generally go into "sleep" mode until it is being used, so the power draw on the computer or from the electricity socket is very small. So do whichever you feel most comfortable doing, but be sure to make regular Time Machine backups.
Can you rename this drive without having to reformat it? I know that if I go to disk utility I can select erase, then rename it there, but I don't want to erase all my files. When in finder, I can control click my drive and it gives me an option to rename it. Does this work? I was gonna try it but I didn't know if it would mess up my drive.

+Jabelemaximus no, you don't have to buy a WD "My Passport for Mac" hard drive. Any Western Digital drive can be reformatted to work with a Macintosh computer. The only difference between a "My Passport for Mac" hard drive and a "My Passport for PC" hard drive is that they have software utilities on it that only work on a Macintosh computer. But when you reformat a hard drive on a Mac it will wipe that information off the drive anyway. Save a few dollars and get a "My Passport for PC" hard dive, and then just reformat it. *Important* Reformatting a drive will wipe away all data on it, so be sure you are selecting the correct drive before you reformat it.
