Thank you so much. I never thought I would figure this out! The WD site was no help at all. My husband usually does this type of thing, I just want to turn it on and go to work. But he had a stroke and I have to figure this stuff out myself. You are a lifesaver!
Thank you, such a good easy to follow tutorial. Wish I had come across it before I tried to use my old WD Passport drive and was prompted to down load the WD software etc which as totally shagged that drive. This time I ignored the WD downloads as you said and all was well. Thank you again. You have put the minds of two old dinosaurs at rest!!
Thanks! This is super helpful. My only comment would be for dummies like me who are trying to do what you’re showing without watching the entire video first, perhaps have a disclaimer at the start so that they don’t format to APFS when wanting to format their new EHD for Time Machine. lol
So...I just got off a Customer Service chat with Western Digital. Like everyone else, my intention of having an external hard drive is to backup my Mac hard drive AND keep my family photos there as well to save space on my Mac. After an aggravating two days of trying to figure out this problem, I was skimming this video while on the chat with the WD guy and learned that formatting as MAC OS Extended (journaled) is the solution. I was laughing to myself that I solved it watching youtube while on a chat with the WD guy. HOWEVER...the customer service guy then stated that partitioning on My Passport is not a good idea as it increases the chances of losing my data. I can vouch for this as my new My Passport is actually a replacement for my previous one that stopped mounting all of a sudden two weeks ago...I thought it was a one off problem but now I know that it's a fundamental problem with My Passport (and prob all the external HDs). I have always hated the thought of backing up to the Cloud due to privacy and cost concerns, but it looks like it may be the only practical solution...
This is really great! I didn’t realize I could do all of this. I’m not sure I did an erase years ago on my passport for Mac. Do you have any videos or suggestions on the case where you want to reset your my passport for Mac. My MacBook Pro still has everything on it since I bought it so I wouldn’t lose anything by wiping the my passport for Mac and reuploading it after following your set up. For now I’d just dedicate the whole 4 TB to Time Machine I think. Can’t think of a reason to split it up.
Thanks so much, this was really helpful! My external hard drive is only 2TB, so maybe not a good idea to partition it 3 ways, as each section won't have much space?
