My husband and I have really cut back, - we’ll be retiring in three years. We too don’t spend money on high priced events, movie theaters, or restaurants that are not a good value. I’ve been donating self help books since the Bible has it all. It’s very freeing to simplify our lives. Thank you for your advice!

Clothes except when necessary. Our closet is more than half empty. Entertainment. There is plenty that’s free. My nails. Gave that up in 2020 and never went back.

I cut my own hair, do my own nails, don't buy any clothes that need dry cleaning, no movies at theaters, no TV service, rarily eat out, no magazine or newspaper subscriptions and shop for needed items used.

No more hair highlights, I've gone natural. I do my own manicures/pedicures now. No more books or magazines, we go to the library. Craft items. Plants, the desert just keeps getting hotter killing the plants. We still go to a movie once in a while but we switched to the $5 theater. It's just as nice as the one that charges $12 for a matinee.

I have switched to frozen berries rather than fresh ones. The fresh are going out of season plus they have gotten so expensive. It's easier to keep a large bag of mixed berries in the freezer and add to smoothies or yogurt. No more protein powders either--I've tried several and they don't digest well and end up sitting in the pantry. Lastly, I'm really good about not giving in to buying items because they sponsor someone's UA-cam video--I'll watch an ad but I don't need to order electrolyte packets, a mattress, or meal kits :)

My daughters and I love to have tea in the afternoon with a little shortbread cookie or other little treat. It's a nice pick me up and something to look forward to. Especially in the fall and winter. I like to hold the warm cup in my hands! But even in the spring and summer, we like teatime!

We very rarely go out to a restaurant anymore. My husband and I went out to get burgers at our favorite restaurant a while ago, and it was $54 with tip. That was it. We have it budgeted for, but we hardly ever do it anymore. I absolutely love a cafe or a family restaurant, I just can't stomach the price anymore. Great video

@3TXSisters To me, it's so sad that people are priced out of a good experience. It's not the restaurant's fault, they already have a small profit margin. My family has had restaurants my whole life. Many customers have stopped coming because of the prices of everything, not just food

    • @3TXSisters
      @3TXSisters Місяць тому +1

@BackroadMoney I know. During Covid, we'd order food from some of our favorite restaurants just to help out. One in particular is chef owned, and we enjoy going there so much. It's always been a little more expensive, but the food is well worth it. We're eating out less just to help our budget; however, we're allowing my sister-in-law to buy us lunch every week or so. We're not charging her for anything, and it makes her feel good to buy us a meal.

Yes, I got over the Beaver Cleaver perfect life, too. Now that is just my husband and me, I buy what works for two. I don't care if is Dollar Tree. In fact, I have squarish sturdy plates from DT that we use a lot! Some kitchen items we don't use a lot, anymore. I got rid of all of the bakery items, as I can't eat sweets (recovered diabetic), and my husband no longer enjoys making desserts.

I live in a university town and work at the university. For years I'd go through empty lecture halls and classrooms on weekends or after regular class hours and I'd pick up pens right and left. I now have jars and glasses of full of pens and rotate through them (so they don't dry out) and will probably never need to buy another pen unless it has green ink which I sometimes use. Also I've donated hundred of pens that have gone to school teachers and a local organization for people with developmental disabilities. I used to take scrap paper at work, folding and tearing it into fourths so I could jot notes down for my supervisor and such. My stack of paper got so tall it became a feature in our office and one of my co-workers asked if she could take some of that note paper to the women's shelter where she worked as a volunteer. Absolutely! Take all you want!
I LOVE books, but have too many. Lately I've donated over 100 unread books and am focusing on reading what I already have though I'll allow myself a new book here and there. Emptying out even a little space is so rewarding. I have a plastic storage container that until recently held books and is now completely empty. And I still have plenty of good books to read!

I am not sending out as many cards and no birthday gifts except for immediate family.
Other than when we went on vacation, we are not going out to eat or get takeouts as often. Prices are too high, and many times, I don't think food is that good.

I make a ground turkey meatloaf for church. It's inexpensive and delicious. The easiest potluck meal I've found to make and the church members devour it. I add bread crumbs + one egg to 3 lbs of ground turkey and mix 50/50 with Kraft Smoky BBQ Sauce & Ketchup. Leaving some to spread on top. Cost- 3 lbs of Ground Turkey- $9 (3 rolls) Egg- .50, breadcrumbs, $1, onion, $.50, ketchup/bbq sauce, $1. For about $12, It makes a HUGE batch which can be split up into portions for those who choose. For our family of 3, it is dinner for 3-4 nights. However, I admit, I use organic where applicable with the ketchup/bbq sauce and our eggs are free range so our meal is much healthier yet costs $2 more.

I tried a new way of making a stew this week. I'm on vacation and didn't want to spend tons of time cooking.
I made a beef stew using hamburger, frozen diced potatoes, a bag of mixed vegetables, and a box of broth. Thickened it with instant mashed potato from a little Styrofoam cup. Took 20 min and maybe $12 and got about 20 bowls.

My husband doesn't drink coffee. He does drink hot chocolate on the weekends, but I make my own instant blend using cocoa powder powdered sugar, vanilla powder, dried milk and a touch of salt. No idea if its less expensive than the packets but it sure does taste better.
Daughter and I enjoy tea in the evenings, but I started growing and drying my own herbal blends. I even dry orange peels from a bag or oranges to add. The cost for us on this is negligible.
No soda. Yes to carbonated water from our aarke, modified to use a large co2 canister.
No to amusement parks and/or water parks. Just not fun anymore.
No more Christmas ornaments. No more magnets. I've collected these for 30 years. There is no more room.
No more books. I write this as my husband chokes on laughter. He said I need to apologize to all of you for lying. He is most likely correct.

I don't buy clothes for a one-time event. I have formal wear for my grandchildren's weddings that I wore to their parents' weddings, lol. Fortunately, I can mix and match the jackets so the outfit is completely different. I'm not buying purses or totes. I invested in some quality accessories that can be inherited by my granddaughters. I don't buy shoes unless a pair is absolutely beyond repair. I haven't bought seasonal decor for years. I still have enough ribbon, wrapping paper, and bags to last for 10 years if I live that long. I'm in a period of life where I'm trying to lessen my possessions. I don't want my children to go through what we've had to do with my sister-in-law's belongings. So don't buy the packets. I don't buy paper napkins and very seldom.paper towels. I seldom buy any pens, writing paper, greeting cards etc. And i have bought very few clothing items for several years. I'm retired and only need a few outfits to wear when i go out. I had a lot of casual clothing for house wear and will eventually need to replace them. But it is a thrill to find big empty gaps in my drawers and closets!. 100%Dawn! I can relate to many of those things! I also will not waste money on fairs/plays etc, ground turkey and chicken with the skin, or books. There are exceptions of course. I just bought your friend Kate’s book that she allowed us free access to on Kindle. I love the book, and I get a lot of value from her UA-cam channel. Since I enjoy reading hard copies of books, I find value in the book, and supporting her and her channel, I purchased her book. I have to really be certain that I’m going to read the book many times (this almost always applies to nonfiction) before I will purchase it. I don’t like to waste money on books, and almost more importantly, I don’t like the clutter of a bunch of books.

Toilet paper. Sure we buy a big thing of TP from Target but we use 2 to 3 squares minimum since we have a hand held bidet squeeze bottle (a separate one for each of us) in like to add a bit of hand soap to mine and instead of using TP occasionally I’ll use a clean towel and a towel (spare towels I cut into rags) specifically just for that! Helps save me a lot and we don’t go through much toilet paper now. We bought one big pack of toilet paper for $20 and it’s lasted us over 2 months. We buy TP every 2-3 months now. Helps a lot! I use laundry sanitizer on our towels also FYI

Dawn, I know what you mean about the ground turkey? You can buy it, but if no one eats it, it's just a wasted bland bird! 😞🤣
A trick that I use; when prepping it for chili, is a beef bouillon cube or the seasoning, along with the chili powder, chopped glazed onions, onion powder, red pepper, chopped garlic slices, and garlic powder.
Adding black powder, green bell peppers-sliced thin, red bell peppers- sliced thin; mixing in ritz wheat crackers, with a small can of steward tomatoes!
Now, if you don't like onions or garlic, you can leave them out! Taste the meat as you go along for flavor! Then add to your cooked chili beans and stir until done... Enjoy! 😋

Yep. I hear ya on the substitutions. I use whatever I have. Sometimes add different seasonings and omit others.
I don’t buy as much single serve coffee pods. I used to buy more but I finally got my family drinking from the big pot. SOOO much cheaper. 😊
I don’t buy table cloths anymore. I used to buy 2-4 a year. I’ve actually scaled them back and I have 3 for Christmas and 2 for thanksgiving. That’s it. Saves me space too.
I don’t buy face lotion anymore. I’m using up what I have but also started using coconut oil. My skin feels so good the next morning. And it’s so cheap and natural to use. That’s a win win for me

Tea is the best drink. It's good for you. Sun Tea is great! It's pennies on the dollar versus any pre-packaged drink full of corn syrup, dyes, etc.. we use a huge glass jar so it's better for the environment than to toss out the outer containers into the dump. I add local honey, mint, anything at the Farmers Market or the spices we grow.. to add flavor and anti-oxidants. For those who are frugal and want to be healthy or loose weight, it's something you should incorporate into your diet and stop being store drinks. We do this about 4.5 months year when the sun is strong making sun tea.

I broke my Sun Tea jar with the nice spout which I bought at a Thrift Store for $4 a year ago. $4 seemed high but we don't spend $ on packaged drinks anymore so it really saved us money. That along with a $1.25 package of 2 dryer balls from the dollar store has really saved us money on power too, dries the clothes faster.

I agree Dawn about spending the money and then feeling you really didn't get the value. I am not buying books anymore. I have been listening to audio books on you tube and that fills my need for books. I do miss one thing about it though and it may just be me and my age, but I don't remember the stories as well as I did with a physical book. Maybe that is a 50/50 about that. They are spending at Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Walmart, thrift stores, Little Caesars... And they're out there every couple of days. They could easily be spending $75 a month on cute little decorative items for their home. The only thing someone should be spending money on is necessities and investments. Tea - No! I don't care for tea. The few times I get a taste for tea, I will buy a gallon of ready-made or get some from a restaurant. I know, neither of those ways are frugal. But neither is buying tea bags to make one gallon of tea, and the remaining bags stay there for years to come.
Events - I do plan to go to the fair this year.
Cookbooks - I have all the cookbooks I need/want. No new cookbooks for my future that I can currently see, but things can always change.
Single ingredients for recipes that I'll never use again - I have bought these in the past, but I don't think I will ever buy them again, because I don't really try new recipes anymore; I stick with the old ones.
Books - I do plan to continue buying books. I have a fear that books will become extinct, and we will only be able to read on electronic devices. That'd be like making chocolate & mashed potatoes & comfortable joggers & oak trees extinct.
Meat - Back when I still ate meat, I didn't like it very well. I hated ground turkey & ground venison. I hated chicken & pork. I hated sea food. I hated bologna & lunch meats. I never really liked meat.
Going out to eat - I'm still going out to eat, but will try to order the cheaper things & probably water.
Protein powder - I've never tried this, and have no interest in doing so.
Gifts - I think I'm ready to quit giving gifts except for the kids. Adult kids are so hard to buy for, plus they have so much more money than I do, so it's hard to buy something they'd even want. Gift cards used to be my safe haven, so that's what I usually gave for gifts. But now I've found out that they aren't a good choice for them, either.
    Decorations - Bare minimum.
    Kitchen Gadgets - No.

I prefer thighs with skin but buy without if that is all they have. I don't like the more popular breasts because it is too dry unless I cook it in something. Don't really care for ground turkey but got that on my last trip because I balked at the price of burger meat. Low-carb burrito with it isn't too bad, probably spaghetti would be ok if I had it. For unknown reasons, I slowed down on eggs. No point buying more for a while. Last bag salad I bought went bad before I could finish it so doing ok with roma and/or cucumber. Have maybe bought only 2 - 3 loaves of bread because I switched to low carb tortilla. Don't buy milk because I don't use it but I have powdered just in case. No mani, pedi, haircuts but may treat myself to a cut. Haven't bought clothes. Still have my heart set on finding the right sized inexpensive handbag and going to buy a game by year end if it goes on a good sale. Have to do car inspect and tags, some maint this month so I doubt I'll be in the mood to spend on myself unless something falls into my path. Haven't bought anything for the house. Keeping watch for free kindle books. Haven't been to a movie, don't have cable, haven't gone out to any kind of entertainment. Want to go to the zoo next year if my health and energy can handle it.
