  • This faithful model is 1/8 scale: 5', 1524mm on deck, weighs 83lb, 38kG. Taken from the lines plans and other data published in Dick Scott's wonderful book "The Galway Hookers" The plans were taken from the "Morning Star", {still sailing}, by Joe Murphy.
    Spars: mast 60", boom 48", gaff 36", bowsprit 30".
Plank on frame, and the frames are 5 part sapele (mahogany), so built as the original. Seams are caulked, not glued, using linseed oil putty. Fastenings are tiny slot headed countersunk wood screws.
Planked mostly without steam bending in obeche.
The false keel is steel,14mm square section, below the real keel. Internal ballast is epoxy flooded lead shot, about 10lb, and the external ballast is 8lb or 16lb of lead on an externally bolted fin keel of laminated fibreglass.
The controls are 5 channel: 4 for sails, {the staysail uses 2, port and starboard}, 1 rudder, plus telemetry reporting radio signal strength, battery strength, and a voltage meter rigged to detect water ingress. There is an automatic bilge pump (aquarium pump), activated by a laboratory float switch. Control gear is mostly Multiplex, Hitec rudder winch and King Max metal geared 6 turn sail winches.
The filthy cargo tarpaulin amidships is a tight fit to the washboards to reduce water ingress. It covers a "load "of foam insulation "bricks" that give 35lb of positive buoyancy in the event of a swamping. Whether this is enough I daren't test! This open boat must be sailed with great care to avoid a swamping and possible sinking.
The main sail is enormous and can be reefed once, but to take the 2nd and third reefs a second sail is used. This starts with the 2nd {false} reef already in, but the 3rd reef can be taken without too much bunching. Each main has its own gaff, so it is quicker to swap than tying in a reef.
This heavy model is launched with the same trolley I built for the trow, also featured on this channel. The trolley is adapted with V blocks for this deep V hull shape.
I hope you enjoy the video. Tony Judd

Most impressive model. Having sailed alongside full sized “Hookers” this model is really true replica and sails so well.
    Excellent

Many thanks for your kind words. It was watching UA-cam video of them racing that I realised just how well they do sail. We plan to go to Galway this year to see them for real. I checked out your own channel:- sailors and modellers, looks interesting, I'll have to subscribe!
