And the 'aids' at 17:34 are called "kloten" (balls, as in cojones), which Aladino held in admiration... ;-) The lee-boards are called "zijzwaarden" (side-swords). Thanks for sharing this little Adventure! These Flat bottom sail boats are very good to explore the North Sea along the Netherlands and German Coast where vast areas of Sea falls dry. That's time to explore and when the tide brings you to float again and simply move on. 👍🇫🇯😄

A funny thing with these flatbottoms is that if you're in the tidal area of the Wadden Sea in one with very low draught and you sail while the other flatbottoms are already stranded by the low tide there's a little envy, and a lot of respect and interest in the boat. Of course it doesn't matter, it's only half an hour of sailing extra and beeing stranded on the Wad is no problem for a flatbottom at all. Nor is it a bad place to stay the night and step out to find some mussels and oysters. It's not a competition, but in low draught boats the draught can't be low enough.

This form of boat honestly seems like it'd be an ideal sailing houseboat. You've got plenty of space to live on, without the deep draft you'd expect from it's weight. I was just about to mention that I was curious how well Maud would do in blue water, but I see you've mentioned that. It surprises me that she'd not be good on the ocean because she looks the part, even if not being the fastest.
What a beautiful episode! You got a unique opportunity and made a nice documentation of it. Your engaging personalities are the key ingredient to get this chance. I enjoyed!!!
What a fantastic adventure! I have always loved the look of Lee Boards and wondered if they would work on a Blue-Water boat. Thank you for another wonderful film.
My understanding is that they're less well suited for blue water boats, but now that I think of it that may be just the overall design of these boats themselves rather than the leeboards in particular. Perhaps someone else can weigh in? -Maya
Yes they are more likely to sail in shallower waters and maybe some parts of the Northern sea. But an Ocean crossing I would not recommend in such a boat. Most or all Blue water boats have a very low point of balance (below the waterline) but boats like this are more stable due to the large area that's touching the Water (like a Catamaran)

Wonderful post! We had the special opportunity to cruise the canals/lakes of Friesland a few years back on 1908 steel barge. We just loved these sailing vessels - their beautiful lines, very utilitarian and capable. Your post brought back many memories! Thank you.
Absolutely loved this episode. It caused a little bit of homesickness. We are in our house in Madeira island (Portugal) as it is too complicated to travel back to the Netherlands to go sailing our yacht. The island you visited has a name: Nye Krúspôle (Frisian name) situated in the lake called Flueszen. Amazingly, we can actually take our 48-foot ketch into that little harbour drawing 1.7 metres. For the rest of the lake outside the buoyed channels you indeed need a flatbottem or 'platbodem' as we call them.
We were in Lemmer last summer, lovely place and great food sitting by the canal side and watching the boats go by, next summer we should be on the water there cruising on the canals lockdown permitting. Thank you for making these wonderful videos I am playing catch up following your trip from the Med northwards.
Just beautiful I had many sailing trips out of Muiden on the sailing barge Libert’e the skipper Wilhelm Griff an amazing man who played many instruments. The hospitality of the Dutch people the whole experience crewing Libert’e was like no other. I understand your joy sailing this boat.
I really enjoy learning about sailing through your videos. They are beautiful in all respects and educational too. I don't know much about the Netherlands and even less about their sailing culture.
Netherlands gang! best country for looking and enjoying boats, we also have more historic boats then anywhere in the world. the best part of OG dutch boats is you can beach em go to the store to buy food come back and sail away, great fun.
Great episode. Thanks so much. A few of the Dutch boats with lee boards have migrated to where we live, on the inland waterways of England, and I have to admit to lee board envy. English canals are too small to sail, so the boards have not real use anymore, but they look so cool. Keel cooling is good. Our narrowboat has it and we just forget about it, there are no problems.
I’ve got one of these coats. Bought it at a store that manufactures and sells uniforms to merchant Mariners in Hamburg, Germany. It’s indestructible and after 20 years still looks as good as the day I purchased it.

This channel is so underrated.
Wonderful post! We had the special opportunity to cruise the canals/lakes of Friesland a few years back on 1908 steel barge. We just loved these sailing vessels - their beautiful lines, very utilitarian and capable. Your post brought back many memories! Thank you.
Between your adventures, Uma, Ran, and MJ Sailing I have found that area of Europe to be amazing and very interesting!
@@charonstyxferryman I forgot to mention Nick & Theresa of Ruby Rose. I was fascinated by their canal trips and sailing on the coast of Brittany
Ah looking at my charts, I thought I recognised where you were, you passed by where we were based at De Kuilart in Koudum
Great choice of Music: reminds me of our sessions in non Covid times :-)
I really enjoy learning about sailing through your videos. They are beautiful in all respects and educational too. I don't know much about the Netherlands and even less about their sailing culture.
Netherlands gang! best country for looking and enjoying boats, we also have more historic boats then anywhere in the world. the best part of OG dutch boats is you can beach em go to the store to buy food come back and sail away, great fun.
Brilliant narration, as usual, your world is all pastels and allegory, so refreshing, I love it.
What a nice trip on the "platbodem" on the fluessen. Lovely to see you two enjoy the trip and huup also. We enjoyed it.
Just like Magic Carpet Maud is lovely, they don't make boats with character any more. Maud has character in bucket loads.
"Drunken Sailor" been making the rounds on some of the other Y.T. vids. as well! "KNOTT Finnished " to name one. Great Stuff!
A beautiful experience sailing through the Canals to open water.
What a lovely adventure. The narration remains mesmerizing. Well written script delivered in lyrical tones. Thank you for sharing
Some say you're turning fairy tales into reality, but I say your reality is how fairy tales are made.
He is a really good guy letting you play with his boat. Nice days sailing
What a very special experience that was. It is an incredible and diverse world of people and places that we live in; thank you for sharing.
Enjoyed the video very much, the Captain & his Boat are awesome
Thank you for sharing a small portion of your adventures. Enjoy them every so much.
Magnificent in all respects. I greatly enjoyed your glee in all the events of the day.
I’ve got one of these coats. Bought it at a store that manufactures and sells uniforms to merchant Mariners in Hamburg, Germany. It’s indestructible and after 20 years still looks as good as the day I purchased it.
