If you're talking out of production boxes, the original Apocalypse release knocks everything since into a cocked hat! You could get the Linebreaker box, which was three plastic Vindicators for the price of two (or less, I got mine for £36!), or the Emperor's Fist box (I think it was called that) where you got ten Leman Russ for £150 when rrp was £25 each at the time. That was a great time for buying models. Shame they've never done anything like that since!
Both of those lasted about 7 seconds, as they were both so much better than the combat patrols in 9th edition rules. At least 10th edition made the Tau Combat patrol less of a disaster.
The Combat Patrol for Dark Eldar is an absolute godsend, but as a Dark Eldar player myself, I can't, in good conscience, actually recommend picking up the army to anyone who might be interested in them. 10ed effectively ignores 2/3 of the faction, so you're more or less pigeon holed into prioritizing kabal stuff, spamming dark lances, and playing cracked-out pseudo-Tau. What's more, about 1/3 of the faction's range is effectively not available for purchase, so you're either going to have to get lucky with local stores or scour secondhand markets if you want to pick up some pretty key models.
Keep in mind with the Drukhari CP no one plays the boats with the guys on them. Look up how to convert the boats guys to units it’s not to hard and you get even more value.
This trick actually gets less impressive in 10th, where wargear is free and squad sizes are fixed. Suddenly, what made for easy MSU squad filler is now leaving value on the table because none of the ones taken from the boats have special weapons. If you already had spare special weapons, that might work, but your Drukhari kits now let you use ALL the weapons in each kit. So if you're starting now, you'll have no special or heavy weapons to spare.

I second this, some arent as useful for 40K (cant really use autocannons on loyalists unless you kitbash some suppressors out of some different kits), but the melta, flamer, plasma box definitely has some value, especially when you pair the kits with the 20 marine kits from heresy or things like age of darkness or the MK III one coming soon

Don't forget that with the ultimate set, you get 2 combat patrols, plus all the stuff you need to start a game, like terrains, gamemats, dice, and rules.

Not really a kit, but the space marine board game comes with Captain Titus, and 20 termagaunts, and two ripper swarms for $40 USD. Though they are only at Target.
Glad I picked up some recruit/elite editions of the previous starter sets. Especially with how much GW is trying to sell off the single models from those sets.
The Chaos Knight Army box that came out I think in 9th was pretty good too. Can't remember the actual cost of it back then, but you got a Knight Abominant that could be turned into a Rampager or Desecrator, and 2 War Dogs with all of their options.
I play platoon level skirmish after years of 3-4,000 point games. Life is good giving my wallet a rest for a change. I finally got time to go back and put some of my older projects together and actually finish some blank spots in the armies' I already have.
Can I nominate the Target Exclusive Space Marine Board Game, 20 Gaunts, 2 Rippers, and a space marine Lieutenant for 40$ that is almost the cost of the character alone
The grey knights Combat Patrol is still a pretty good value, though it dropped after the point updates to 660 maximum points from the box but with pretty good variety only problem is characters because you only get the nemesis dreadknight and a librarian
It's humorous when you can watch a top 10, and none of them reflect a/the faction you would support. 😊 Fortunately, I'm not in a position where I need to buy, and assemble, an army, but I like Guard, for instance, and they have always been paradoxically expensive to collect, despite being the more mundane, fragile, human troops, and regardless of which aspect of them you'd choose to collect. It's also humorous that Eldar could hold such a sway over initial 10e, when they off and on again sucked so hard, for so many years, and still have several kits that have long been in desperate need of updating; you'd almost think not as many current players would HAVE a big Eldar force, or be able to make it to so many separate tournaments, to trounce everyone else under Space Elven foot. As an example, I still don't know how numerous people are fielding Shadow Spectres. They are, hands down, one of the best units available for Eldar, but I don't think FW has actually had them available, even at their price, for years, and Ebay can be both sparse wirh then, AND overcosted. Has someone figured out a good 3D print for these Forge World pieces? Are they just willing to spend whatever, to win games? Surprising. Still, glad some boxes, and factions, can have affordable options. 40k is a bit of a luxury purchase, as is, so saving some somewhere is great! An interesting additional video could be affordable characters? So, 10e has a number of units who need a character added in to be worth using, and a number of characters who need a whole squad, to hide in, supplied, just to field them, and GW is a bit famous for their character tax. There have also long been periods where named Special Characters were arguably not as good as their faction's build-your-own variants, and so didn't see play, but now, with free war gear, Special rules, etc, it might be neat to see a list of popular 40k character models who are easy to acquire, and maybe good for their $ cost? Points adjustments have been great fir several factions, but if the model is old, hard to find, or costs a second mortgage, you still might not want to buy it.

Armigers are definitely more of a value in theory than in practice in some areas of the world. They have not come back in stock in the USA since before the beginning of the ENTIRE YEAR and resellers on ebay are going for over 200% markup. Your army comp needing war dogs as a USA player is basically saying "You're not making this army this year".
Best thing I've ever done in 40k was deciding that Imperial Knights would be my 10e army before any rules for 10e came out. Got a lot of the kits before they sold and have spent most of early 10e modeling them.
If they'd make Incubi remotely useable, the Dark Eldar Combat Patrol might be one of the best boxes ever offered. Every new DE player should buy 2-3 Combat Patrols and the Kill Team (just to make their Kabalites look fancy).
at least in Spain you can get the Xenos half of the big release boxes at a ridiculous price if you pay attention to the 2nd hand market. I have 3k points of necrons that costed altogether less than 200€ and I've bought at least twice the Indomitus necrons at 45€ or so, last time was maybe 2 or 3 months ago, so new players can still tune in. Complemented with some tactical purchases from Imperium and you have an army. Also I'm tracking the price of Leviathan Nid halves and I have no doubt in my mind it will end up there as well, they seem to be selling even worse than the necrons, and have more supply. Started at 85€ being a nice price, now see some of them for days at 65€ without no one buying them, and there are at least 200 or 300 listed that no one cares to buy. I guess I'll collect bugs any day 😅
I actually got both the obliteraters and the venomcrawler in the war of the soulforge box I just started my first army m wanted dark angels saw the grandmaster and said 200 wasn't too much to start an army lmfao
Custodian guard box should be rated higher when you realize it also makes a complete Kill Team (Talons of The Emperor) with an extra unit for alternate kit. Fairly competitive team and quick to paint too.
What I hate about the Starter 10th Edition Set is the fact that the Captain is helmetless. And whenever I buy a starter set (I will, the Terminators look too good) I'll have to keep the Captain on standby till I buy a multipart Terminator box to take out one of their helmets
I got the tyranid half of Leviathan on wallapop for 75€ and the marine half of the ultimate set for 68… you can get more than 2 patrols for under 150, feels good! Now let’s paint that pile of plastic hahaha It’s a bit too bad that other armies like ad mec or sisters cost double than that to have 1000 points, let alone 2000
You just need to ask your opponent, as while it's bigger that isn't just a good thing, as it means they can see and target it easier. So works both ways
As a new player looking to build a second army (nids or space wolves) the starter and ultimatr starter really interest me but im not sure which is better.
Wouldn't the Custodian Wardens be better value? Same price for 5 (at least on secondary market) and more PPM, plus they look better with the robes imo.
How do you feel about the Eldritch Omens boxed set? I am getting into the Aeldari & as luck would have my son wants to start collecting Chaos Space Marines.
At a guess he's used the Poorhammer spreadsheets they released after their podcast this week, those exclude forgeworld and most single figure box sets.

There’s nothing wrong with engaging with the hobby another way (3d print proxies etc) or even just picking another game system (battletech, kings of war). Or just bypass wargames entirely if you prefer. Don’t be down on yourself for what you can or can’t afford to spend as “fun money”. Nobody will look down on you for not playing Warhammer if you can’t or don’t want to
addendum: Leviathan box is bullshit. Ultimate Starter Set box is better plus that one has the only pocketbook version of the rules other than the hardcover tome in the Leviathan box plus terrain plus 2 combat patrols plus index cards for both patrols. Neither Levisthan box nor Starter Sethas data sheets though.

Armigers would be great cost per point/plastic IF THEY HAD ANY. Been waiting months and still none available.
Been over a year for the war dogs (chaos armiger kit)
Yeah War Dogs and Armigers are just GONE. There's been no attempt by GW to restock any since the beginning of the entire year.
At the rate GW is going, they'll push people into 3d printing simply due to lack of stock.
@@Bluecho4 too late.
I got the HH boxset to start my blood angels originally
Custodian guard box should be rated higher when you realize it also makes a complete Kill Team (Talons of The Emperor) with an extra unit for alternate kit. Fairly competitive team and quick to paint too.
I got the 9th edition Recruit box for like $45 bucks, the same GW is gonna charge for a single LT moving forward.
I prefer 30 RTB01 marines for £10, 3 Rhinos for £10 or 2 Land Raiders for £10
That the original 87 prices? 😢
I just bought the Grey Knights Combat Patrol and Boarding Patrol boxes an the new Data Cards for them for about £130
What I hate about the Starter 10th Edition Set is the fact that the Captain is helmetless. And whenever I buy a starter set (I will, the Terminators look too good) I'll have to keep the Captain on standby till I buy a multipart Terminator box to take out one of their helmets
Poor Hammer did a great video on this as well
I'm guessing he's used their spreadsheets too as they're pretty complete
I got the tyranid half of Leviathan on wallapop for 75€ and the marine half of the ultimate set for 68… you can get more than 2 patrols for under 150, feels good! Now let’s paint that pile of plastic hahaha
It’s a bit too bad that other armies like ad mec or sisters cost double than that to have 1000 points, let alone 2000
Ive considered using my spartan as a land raider but when i looked it up most people said its too large to be a proper proxy
You just need to ask your opponent, as while it's bigger that isn't just a good thing, as it means they can see and target it easier. So works both ways
ua-cam.com/video/eJcjbW9uyOo/v-deo.html
that shows a great size comparison, its actually totally fine as its not that bigger
Ditto. Should be fine in a friendly game by agreement.
Auspex Tactics is the benchmark all college professors judge us by.
Can you not play all of the Chaos Demons combat patrol models in Age of Sigmar also? If so I would say that's real value for money
AZ someone that plays both games. It's a steal only if you plan to play both games. Otherwise not so much
As usual, highly useful. Thanks Auspex.
There’s still like 10 leviathans at my local gaming store
If you were starting out fresh, going to use both armies in the boxes, would you go ultimate starter or Leviathan? I’ve found one for sale.
I was wondering if hellblasters would make the list.
Conspiracy Theory; Auspex is secretly now an AI pumping out content like a forgeworld.
...Secretly?
Yay we have a chaos model set that I _actually bought_ 🎉🎉
Leviathan was great value for money
The starter boxes are better value. You miss out on some units but it’s cheaper in the long run
I would add Robute Guilliman and The Lion. Both 380 points for like 75 USD
At a guess he's used the Poorhammer spreadsheets they released after their podcast this week, those exclude forgeworld and most single figure box sets.
if only all products were available....
Auspex, GW isn't a million dollar company anymore. They are worth over 4 billion USD now.
This should help me to fill out some of my army
Tbh
i should buy 2 more genestealer combat patrols
Age of darkness box is slowly becoming obsolete. By the new codex, you cant use half or 70% of the box as legal minis
Isn’t the yncrane like 350 points right now?
This channel is amazing so much content.
Yep, Leviathan and the starter boxes are great value. If only I wanted Space Marines or Tyranids. Which I don’t 😉
I think is better to buy expensive stuff first before they get un-buyable except for the rich people.
If you compare to Admech, everything is cheap and valuable.
this video just shows how expensive warhammer's become. I remember when the Assault on Black Reach box set was only £40
1 Pound sterling equals = $1.22 United States Dollar
Nice travel expense
Its $125 australial for the venomcrawler/oblits 😂
Is it me or does the venom crawler look identical to a psychophage?
is GW only a multi million dollar company ??? oh jezz then i can understand the price hikes ! they need to hit that billion dollar company xD
They're a multi-billion dollar company that is worth over 4 billion US dollars.
@@raistlarn i know xD im just messing with Auspex
One that stand outs to me is the ork vanguard box. Allot of good kits in 1 box with a cool character hq choice included
Gsc becomes so much more affordable in patrol boxes and the like. Almost always rebuyable to 2k. Completely unaffordable 1 kit at a time
Yep, gsc have a fantastic patrol box.
Too many Aberrants I don't need more Aberrants lol
@@oblivionfan345Tony the combat patrol box is still 🔥even if you sell the abberants at discount to other gsc players who want them.
feels good since i managed to get the leviathan box, the starter box, and then the recruit and elite edition from 9th, and then i also snagged the pariha killteam box for super cheap :D and i dont play any of thsoe factiuons i just couldnt pass up the savings hahaha
The Word 'value' mentioned in the same sentence as the words 'Games Workshop'. Best joke of 2023!
Going to throw myself into an active volcano since I still can’t afford any of these
There’s nothing wrong with engaging with the hobby another way (3d print proxies etc) or even just picking another game system (battletech, kings of war). Or just bypass wargames entirely if you prefer.
Don’t be down on yourself for what you can or can’t afford to spend as “fun money”. Nobody will look down on you for not playing Warhammer if you can’t or don’t want to
If the prices would go down by about 35%-50% then they would be ok.
You cannot recommend the Age of Darkness box, the Spartan is way larger than a Land Raider and Contemptors are being removed entirely.
The best value is buying crdboard boxes and drawing marines on them
addendum: Leviathan box is bullshit. Ultimate Starter Set box is better plus that one has the only pocketbook version of the rules other than the hardcover tome in the Leviathan box plus terrain plus 2 combat patrols plus index cards for both patrols.
Neither Levisthan box nor Starter Sethas data sheets though.
The idea that $60 for five plastic toys is a value set is exactly why GW is as scummy as it is.
“Best value” and “GW” don’t belong in the same sentence. The only “value” GW cares about is keeping their shareholders happy at the expense of their staff and customers.
Me who is a Star Wars Legion player:*Laughs in $120 Separatist Invasion Force*
The model quality is pretty noticeable though. Sorry, it’s not the same.
@@timunderbakke8756 It’s a hoard army, quality isn’t really its thing.
@@randomidoit9605I meant literal quality, like the plastic itself. A 40K army can be horde army or elite or somewhere in between.
@@timunderbakke8756 I know, it has less quality for more models, good for a hoard army.
Financial literacy is only spending thousands on the CHEAP boxes like these. I will never own a house.
