Album: A momentary lapse of reason (1987)
Lyrics:
The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky:
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers,
But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking
He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough
His blood has frozen & curdled with fright
His knees have trembled & given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
His step has faltered
One world, one soul
Time pass, river roll
And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be
There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder than words,
Of promises broken

Without any exaggeration, they are the greatest musicians in the world....
sorrow is easily to me pink floyds most underrated song.
+Juda packer Martinez
couldn't agree more although Louder than Words is another really close contender.
+Juda packers 41287 Completely agree. The solo pieces goes right in the feels!
I would actually say in terms of underrated floyd, all three of their final albums are under rated.
Most of their modern work is fantastic.
The Final Cut can just piss off for me, but Momentary, Division and Endless were all brilliant albums.
+Juda packers 41287 cause it was too ahead of its time
As a kid, my father introduced me to Pink Floyd at a very young age. Among some of the songs I played at my fathers funeral, (all Pink Floyd btw), this one had the room sobbing. R.I.P. Pops.
This track is the reason I began investing in high quality audio equipment. Masterpiece that never gets old.
One of the best guitar intro ever...
I agree with you
I couldn't agree more
And outro... Ridiculous guitar solo!
Yes but not so difficult to play ... Try ;-)
@@lordofglencoe7084 Oh there's always one isn't there 😒
Gilmour is an absolute Musical Genius
SAM CASINO Roger Waters is the genius
Without Roger this band never goes anywhere
I beg to differ. They were both genii in their own rights. David Gilmour was the one who expanded your mind and sent you reeling into the world of psychedelia. Roger Waters took you down the path of politics, and reality.
Surreal versus the real. It depends on where you want to let your mind wander.
roger was also a genius, but don’t forget that he wasn’t in the division bell, one of the best floyd albums.
Roger Waters isn't on this song in any way shape or form and it's still superior to anything Floyd did with him. Waters can suck an egg.
THE BEST AND GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME
There's a silence that speaks so much louder than words!
Of promises broken...
Guts me Everytime 😶
Typical Finnish conversation 😅
This is not a song
This is emotion for me
Pink floyd makes life worth it
It's simple... A masterpiece.
I always get chills from the last couple lines.

Me too it might be my favorite part of the whole song. It’s pure art.
Pink Floyd. Favourite band ever.
I remember the first time I heard this song, when i just played it randomly from my dad's album collection. I was 11 at that time, i felt a strange bliss while hearing it and I somewhat got hooked to pink floyd. I coudn't understand what they actually meant by the lyrics of this song and asked my father what they actually meant. He said, "this music is for smart people son, when and if you're smart enough, you'll understand by yourself."Thanks dad.
Mieli wiele wspaniałych utworów, ale ten najbardziej mnie ściska i chętnie do niego wracam!
Gillmores guitar is hauntingly great, this is such a great tune..we are all lucky to have lived when pink Floyd was here cutting through the darkness with such great inspired music, that will last a eternity
Holy shit, this song is perfect
Yazan Shrouf imo the pulse edition is better
Yust look on the version from fender anniversary, blows your mind
Points for the Pulse avi!......
What did you eat so that the shit is holy??? Moron!
@@yyz0013 Why are u so mad?
I just discovered this soundtrack from Pink floyd yesterday , and its by now the best Music i have ever heard, as simple as that.
+karen williams I started with Pulse!
My favorite Pink Floyd song.
I'm 28 years old and I remember listening to Pink Floyd as well as so many others growing up. My favorite music is between late 70s to early 90s with 80s being my favorite but God I love Pink Floyd.. they re-invented themselves many times and changed and adjusted with the times.. Some might disagree but my favorite album is probably division bell omg it's beyond art work.. I sit here traveling on I-35 with my dad in our semi truck hauling fracking sand jamming out to this song Lol!!
NO ONE BETTER THAN LEGENDS FLOYD! STILL HERE WAS 15, NOW 46 YEARS OLD!
I was 7 when introduced and now 26 I was born in the wrong year.
Acid rock of the 70 " s is still alive today pink Floyd you all rock the world !!
this jam will always be the song that will pink Floyd's song VERY MUCH LOVED
38 people can not handle the greatness of Pink Floyd. Sucks for them!
Here, Here!
They must have liked it double.
yep
I love the delicate sound of thunder version of this song
lol
One world, one soul
Time pass, river roll
used to appreciate this song as a young guy for its music. now after living through heartache and sorrow I can appreciate this song for its meaning.
turbulus I’ve always thought this song to be about manic depression, such as that of Syd Barret. I think anyone can relate to this song. I’ve heard it a million times and it NEVER gets old.
best band of all time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! need I say more
Most poetic but quite an underrated Pink Floyd song. Lyrics and guitar solo are heart wrenching. Can you relate?
#PinkFloyd
My favorite pink floyd song. Never even heard this album for the longest time.
Nomad x mine as well. It relates.
+Abhishek Joshi I actually relate to this song emotionally. Like the lyrics fit my life. i own the album. i believe this whole album was mainly a david gilmour solo album. He wrote all if not most of the lyrics. It really shows his talent. Richard wright was mainly just a filler, along with nick mason. Not saying they are not talented themselves, but just didnt contribute nearly enough as david did.
deakon Dextre I know what you mean. We all have something in our bags. The lyrics fit my life, too.
+deakon Dextre While I don't necessarily disagree, varying circumstances for both of them meant that Rick and Nick could hardly contribute as much as they'd probably have liked.
You may have heard that somewhat recently (before The Endless River) a remixed/remastered version of AMLOR was in the works. It was planned to feature newly recorded drums from Nick, as well as, keyboard parts from Rick (sourced from live recordings of the period).
Would be/have been an interesting contrast as this version would have removed a lot of the 80s sound as well making it sound more Floydian.
David Gilmour's Guitar work is by far the best I've ever heard. I love when they perform this in Pulse, David's always one with all his guitars. Nobody shreds like that, stopping you to rethink your entire life and what the hell happened. Always pushing the boundaries of music, I will never stop loving Pink Floyd's music. Number one Pink Floyd fan here. Retired Psychedelic Astronaut from the land of Ebonia.
The last three days I have been in a terrible bipolar disorder, this is the first song that I listen to in this state and it helps to cope with my horror, it seems that you are burning on a slow fire 🙈
This is the best song I have listened to during my time on Earth.
You can't "remaster" a masterpiece.
Why can't "recent" generations produce contemplative, lyrical music such as this?! Enough with the manufactured assembly-line music already! THIS is what my soul thirsts for!
Sheryl Moore Indeed. Some day, I want to take a bunch of CDs of today's music and burn them while blasting great music like Pink Floyd and Rush.
because they do cocaine and amphetamines instead of doing LSD, heroin and other inspirational drugs. basically - modern day musicians are mostly p*ssies.
Because Lizo killed them off!
So let your soul drink then..
It sounds boomerish. I would say that nothing that had been made prior to creation creation of Pink Floyd nor exists after it can be compared to them.
sorrow One of the most beautiful songs of the giants Pink Floyd
If there was a heaven, It would sound something like this...
This is very sad D:
Since heaven implies death, this is pure sweet sorrow.
Happy Mask You are correct, thats why this song brings tears to my eyes even today.
The beginig sounds like the gates of hell, but then it reveals heven
The being destroyer of worlds The opening sounds like when Rome burned. Or as the Berlin Wall fell.
Con esta cansion siento que me traslado a otra dimensión grande Pink Floyd saludos desde Pucallpa Perú .
Saludos desde ica
never loose what drives you...or the lyrics will become your version of truth!!!
Absolutely epic. I always thought this song to be about manic depression (bipolar disorder), such as that of Syd Barret, and being trapped in one’s own dark world.
My sister liked the Floyd only so/so but she didn’t really know their sound. One morning she and I were on our way to our uncle’s funeral after he died quite young. As she sat in my car, and I proceeded to remove all the snow off of it for several minutes, my Audi randomly pulled this song off of my phone and played it for her. After I got into my car I found my sister in a complete transatonic state as Sorrow neared its end. She was absolutely mesmerized by this song. And she wouldn’t snap out of it for several minutes after Sorrow ended. We never said a word about it; we didn’t have to. I know just by her reaction that she thought this was the greatest piece of musical instrumentation her ears had ever heard. What a way to properly introduce someone to Pink Floyd! She’s been a huge fan ever since.
Long time fan of Floyd and this is one song I consistently come back to. Epic, masterpiece and more!
this is perfection
inna soo got that right
inna soo fax
It's perfect. Even without Waters it is still beautiful. A 10 out of 10.
Dave plays better solos while warming-up, than most guitar gods officially ever released :D:D that is a fact :D
Love it when David cuts loose at the end. Epic solo.
No matter where I go I wind up back at the best. Pink Floyd. Since I first heard them on a cassette player while on board the USS Kitty Hawk CV 63 headed for Hawaii in 73. Panasonic with one speaker. They reached out and touched my mind and soul.
👍🏼
So beautiful, one of the best songs by Floyd.
best intro of all time, fucking genius
papa giovanni And that layered guitar ending; fantastic!
Very otherworldly sounding...this is that rare kind of song that grabs hold, pulls you in&makes you feel like you're literally having an out of body experience while listening to it...damn,truly amazing
God *damn* those opening riffs
awesome opening riffs but do not damn it please.
EXACTLY! :-)
Holy fuck guys! How this song starts, aghhhwww! that guitar.... Might be the best intro of all time, and one of the absolutely greatest songs of all time too! Gilmour, what a mastermind. It was long time ago I had such goosebumps I have right now!. Brrr.. Too good.
your right
Ben Dover i love this song, i think is there most underrated song.
The only thing it needs is a little feedback from the amps and it's perfect.
He recorded the song on a Steinberger Strat into a Big Muff pedal played into a little 18w Fender Super Champ, they then played the guitar part through the quad PA at the LA Forum to get the huge reverb
8:04 - 8:27 the best part of the solo. This guitar cries
+Michał Adamowicz definitely the best part.
Да соло зачетное,
The intro too
GREAT Song, Rock on! David Gilmour took this Band to new heights. This song resonates with so many of us.
This opened my mind in ways only pink Floyd could!
Music is the only friend that will never turn its back on you. God bless sound.
best guitar solo ever period
yes very good solo on guitar I like it best ever no mike Campbell on running down the dream tom petty had the best out there for me
Comfortably Numb.
200% True
Probably the greatest album of all time.
Great songs like this don't grow on any old trees!
VIELEN LIEBEN DANK!!! Dieser Song ist ein läggar Schokibonbon...
El cerebro me agradece por reproducir este tema
Saw a hockey game on ESPN in the 90's that used the intro up to @1:35 as its mood setter. To this day it's the best broadcast setup for a sports telecast I've ever seen. Pink Floyd is just about as universally adored as any band ever. They're timeless.
semplicemente INARRIVABILI,COME LORO NESSUNO,NON CI SONO GRUPPI ESISTENTI E NON CHE SI AVVICINANO,E INTENDO NESSUNO,MANCO I QUEEN,I PINK FLOYD SONO E SARANNO IMMORTALI
The only two bands that can make me cry are the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Just because they are so good.
It just occurred to me how long I have listened to this band. They were ahead of their time. Here I sit 40+ years later unable to understand where all that time went and wondering still, if time has caught up to them.
Pink Floyd Relics was the first music album I ever bought. I bought it on cassette tape and nearly wore it out. It was decent, but this one is better.
...and then one day you'll find..ten years have got behind you..no one told you where to run..you missed the starting gun??
Perfect reply:)))) Loved it!
MissDistarr60 I loved this song so much I learnt the intro on guitar and practiced it to the point where my strings got a little blood on them from all the sliding
jaylex666 David Gilmour is a fantastic guitarist. He receives about half the props he deserves from the guitar world. The blues influence is undeniable, especially in the earlier stuff.
Perfect...
perfection!
lyrics are incredible so is the drums

Flora Vinitzky .. thanks for the lyrics .. sounds like the anthem for the times we are currently living in.
always will be...
Christine Lawrence, rightly so! I feel the same. Listen to High Hopes from Division Bell. Anthem of lost youth and ideals
About manic depression (bipolar disorder), no? Such as that of Syd Barret.
N1
I still think of this as late Floyd (i.e. after Waters) ..... shows how old I am -- this album will be 30 years old next year.
Roger WAS Pink Floyd.
Absolutely Epic. No other words required.
most underrated song AND SOLO, in my opinion the best pink floyd solo, sorry for fans of time and comfortably numb, but this one takes the cake for me
Stupid parrot,do you know what underrated means?
Fool! Mr Nobody is rating Pink Floyd..Shut up fool and don't post parroted phrases you have no idea what they mean..Pfew!
This song !!!! Feels like my brain melts and flows down slowly down my neck .. Then it echoes a million words in the hollow skull without an end ..
The bass line sounds like a robot repeating over and over again, is so awesome!!
The Genius of Pink Floyd, Rock on! Mesmerizing, Noting like this great Band Just listen to those chords ripping, Bravo David Gilmour!
This track and "One Slip" are all you need from A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
Andy Bechtel And On The Turning Away...ofcourse. :))
Jakub Wallflower Don't forget Yet Another Movie and Learning to Fly!

Anything by Pink Floyd I love, today this is how I feel, sorrow. For our sad little world looking into outer space for other intelligent life and when we finally make it as far as the dark side of the moon only to find.... we're the only dumbasses here!
Those drums are phenomenal!
What the hell is wrong with the goobers that disliked this song. All time favorite floyd song. Fucking legends! Guitar solos are epic. Glad I have all their albums, pisses me off when they play floyd on the radio they play the same 2 songs over and over and over when there's so many masterpiece ' s to be played.

The second greatest guitar solo ever, only after Comfortably Numb.
This song is epic today and will be epic 1k years from now.
This is easily my favorite Pink Floyd song. David Gilmour is the best.
Musica d'autore, che ancora mette i brividi dopo anni!
Davids playing goes right for the soul.
David Gilmour the best of Pink Floyd! Eu vi o show dele em SP com o meu Pai, simplesmente sensacional!!! Quando ele tocou Sorrow a galera enlouqueceu no Allianz Park!!!! Desde criança meu querido Pai me fazia ouvir o som do Pink Floyd! 😎
