  • Video recording of a presentation on growing hops given on April 27, 2014 at Richters Herbs by Nicholas Schaut, Nicholas is owner and operator of Bighead Hops, a certified organic farm that grows hops commercially for Ontario craft breweries such as Muskoka Brewery, Great Lakes Brewery, Trois Brassuers, MacLean Ales, and Northwinds Brewing. As a founding member and President of the Ontario Hop Growers' Association, he works with the community of hops growers to develop, support, and research, technical innovations for small scale growing, and helps to market locally grown hops. Nicholas also brews and enjoys the odd beer. This presentation is primarily directed to those who are thinking about growing hops commercially. But there is some much information here, even a home gardener interested in growing a few hops for home brewing will find this video very useful.

Thank you! Despite living in the States (Kansas, specifically) where the weather conditions are quite different than Ontario (I assume) the information was very helpful for my homebrew hobby plants. Cheers!

A very informative presentation. Good job, Nicholas! Thank you very much! I have a line of 10 hops plants of two varieties - Sterling and Mt Hood. This year temperatures were very high, so I paid a special attention to watering. However, I did not have any other resource than drinking water known for having chlorine. I didn't use that water right away, letting it say in a big canister for a couple of days hoping that chlorine would be gone. It worked well, and this year I've harvested a huge amount of hops, so now I have to master beer brewing, and I will.

Nicholas: excellent presentation! Now I can really understand the Hop growing industry. As an agricultural consultant, this information was extremely valuable and thorough. Very much appreciated.

2 minutes in and I've heard all I need, not planting hops in my yard. I'll stick with hops direct by the pound...
