    Hi, I started my backyard hops from rhizomes last year (2020) and they grow up our pergola posts and across at the top. I was impressed with my first year as we got enough of a crop to dry hop two of our home brews. I took care of them in the Fall and covered with mulch to protect them from our Ottawa Ontario winter. FF to Spring 2021 and we got an early Spring where everything was about 3 weeks ahead of last years. The three bones I kept and really healthy and strong from both my plants. I cut about 20 shoots from each. They are already up and going across! I can’t wait to see our crop this year. Thank you for the video, very well explained and confirmed that I did things correctly.

    Thanks so much for the great information…I grew up in Bavaria Germany and hops in the landscape were incredibly common (beer country) as we traveled on the autobahn…never realized they needed to be live plants and that seeds were not as great a start for them…will be doing my best to locate some to plant when ready…thank you so much

    Thank you for the informative video, I got several rhizomes and only 3 are alive however I haven't been successfully growing well in the ground, 1) Probably, I have planted the wrong location although I planted those 3 rhizomes in good compost soil, 2) I feed liquid fertilizer every 6 weeks I am not sure if I feed something between, This is why I am planning to dig out during dormant to a larger container with better soil condition. I didn't know rhizomes grow roots deeper so this is probably one of the issues with my rhizomes the ground is too compact for them.

    There is actually one more method to grow hops. You can propagate the cuttings from the bine. You cut them to leave 3 bines on the plant. Don't throw those cuttings away. devide the bines so you have a stem and 1 pair of leaves. Plant them with some rooting compound and you will have new plants. So 1 bine can produce several plants.

    I hope your bines have grown bigger and better in subsequent years.
    I have grown hops in 2 different homes. the first year from the rhizome the harvest is small, as the plant is also growing roots. The next year I got over a pound of dried hops from a single plant. Right now I have Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Tetenang, Saaz, EKG, and Magnum all growing up the back of my garage. each plant gives me a pound or more hops for a large amount of my brewing. Once a year I also get to make a wet hops pale ale using the 3 C hops. 5:1 wet vs dry hops seems like a lot but is the same volume.

      It may work if you are able to successfully uproot a good portion of the root system. Although, if you are transplanting them into a raised bed with other crops, beware they could take over the bed.

    Just curious if I should prune the new shoots that are coming from the middle of the bine… my hops are about 10 feet tall already here in Ohio and about 5-6 feet up It has new leaders starting to branch off outwards. Should I snip that back??

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  Рік тому

      Great question! When it comes to pruning hops, it's generally recommended to remove any lateral shoots or side branches that emerge from the middle of the bine. These shoots can divert energy from the main leaders and affect the overall growth and health of the plant. Snipping them back can help redirect the plant's energy to the main vertical growth. However, if the lateral shoots are healthy and robust, you can also consider training them to grow along a trellis or support system to increase foliage density. Happy hop growing in Ohio! Hello. Very nice video. One thing I'm having a hard time finding is a video that includes pruning the bull shoots. And, telling the bull shoots apart from the "bines" you want to guide/grow. I don't see that in yours either. Do you happen to have any footage on pruning the bull shoots?

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  4 роки тому

      Each year in the spring I have several shoots come up - from each plant I only allow 2 or 3 shoots to run up the line. I typically will keep the 3 strongest shoots and clip the others. Right now, here in NH I have many that are popping up. I'll clip them soon. Will try to make a video on that so you can see. Cheers, Tim

      Alicia Clampet Hi Alicia! Thanks for watching. I’d recommend trying cascade hops to start, those seem easiest to grow. Given you have a dry climate with flooding I’d make sure you really try to keep them moist early on, especially if your growing in pots. Make sure you have drainage holes in the pots for the areas when you have flooding. Keep me posted how it goes!

    I am interested in raising hops using hydroponics (airponics) - did you consider that when you started your experiments? Also, what was your first year yield and how many plants or rhysomes did you pot?

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  5 років тому

      I did not consider hydroponics, I only did two pots with 1 rhizome in it each. I got about 4oz total of dry hops. A first year plant may produce no more than a few ounces of hops, but by the third year some varieties will yield 1 to 2 pounds per plant!

      The first year I think somewhere around 6 Oz wet. The second year (last year) I got way over a LB. Yields over tripled. I donated many of them to a herbalists and dried some for tea. This year I’m interested to see what they do. They are still in the pots and the roots have shot way down into the soil. The first year, yields will be small, don’t get discouraged, you will be happy the following years.

Some of the shoots are 3 feet tall in a raised bed facing south, but a few of tips are turning brown. I am in the Bay Area California, it can be over 80F at noon. I water them everyday. I put compost at the bottom of the raised bed at the beginning, I gave them some fish fertilizer when they germinated. What do I do wrong? So sad to look them dying, look forward to your reply.

      Great question! The vines and leaves are susceptible to frost. After your final harvest cut the vines back down to the crown. You can then cover them with mulch to help protect from the cold, the crown should be winter hardy up to -20F. I you have them in buckets you can cover them with straw.

      Good question, similar to apples, hops do not reproduce true to type, meaning that the vines from the seed will produce hops that are almost certain to be slightly different than the parent. You can have fun and experiment with seeds however taking a cutting of the rhizome almost guarantees the same genetics. Reading though one of the most reviewed hops seeds here, looks like most folks are disappointed with the seed approach - amzn.to/2FlQli3

      Hi Justin,
      Yes, they are correct. If you can plant them in the ground, do that, that is much better than pots because of their extensive root system. Knowing this, I decided to start in pots because I didn’t have a permanent place for them yet. This spring I will likely build a raised bed for them and transplant them in the ground.

      I would recommend searching online for a place that sells hop rhizomes not seeds.

    why only three shoots?

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening

      The overall plant will apply the most focus into those shoots with more vigorous production, this is important especially for the first year.

    Can you grow them horizontally instead of vertically?

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  5 років тому

      I bet you could!

    • @codeklopper6790
      @codeklopper6790 5 років тому +2

      You can. But it is really annoying. I grow 1 plant horizontal but I always need to guide the bine around the trellis. The bines follows the sun. So for a horizontal trellis it is perfect because the bine wraps itself around. But with a horizontal trellis the bine is always pointing upwards.
