I am not LDS, but I find the religion and all of your customs and ideas super fascinating so I’ve watched a bunch of your videos.
This is the most genuine and honest I’ve seen you be in any of your videos. I felt like we got to see the real you, which was so nice!

I think the concern is that missionaries, and members, get preoccupied with repentance because if you have unrepentant sin then you can't have the spirit. And if you don't have the spirit, it can't direct you to those who would be receptive to your message.
So then the concern becomes, how serious does a sin have to be to prevent a person from being worthy of the spirit? In which case the counsel, at least that I've heard, would be to stay as close to "the gospel tree trunk" as possible, rather than trying to see how thin of a branch you can sit on before it breaks, or before you are considered unworthy of the presence of the spirit.
And it's this kind of counsel that leads to a preoccupation with perfectionism, or scrupulosity. If you never loosen your grip on the iron rod, you'll never risk losing your direction in the mist of darkness, or get distracted or enticed by the people in the great and spacious building. So it's best to keep your grip firm.

For a long time I thought I was a "B-" missionary. I tried really hard but fell short in so many ways. Over 20 years later I finally asked the Lord to grade me instead of myself. His grade was much higher.

I’m actually a member of the church. And I love to be able to see such a different perspective than most people have. I can truly say that you know so much about the church and you seem to truly believe what you say. Also, what part of Utah do you live in. I live in Orem

Yes, 2 Nephi 2: 11 does talk about opposition in all things, in verse 27 it says that we are free to chose _"liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men"_ a.k.a. repent/live the gospel, or free to choose "captivity and death" _"for [the devil] seeketh that _*_all men might be miserable_*_ like unto himself."_
And Helaman 5: 12 says that we should build our foundation on "the rock of our redeemer, which is Christ" so when we come upon challenges or temptations in life, _"it shall have no power over you to drag you down to _*_the gulf of misery and endless wo,_*_ because of the rock upon which ye are built"._
In 2 Nephi 9: 39, _"O, my beloved brethren, _*_remember the awfulness in transgressing_*_ against that Holy God, and also _*_the awfulness of yielding_*_ to the enticings of that cunning one. Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal."_ And the last phrase, "spiritually minded is life eternal" even creates the acronym SMILE.
And of course Alma 41: 10 _"Do not suppose, because it has been spoken concerning restoration, that ye shall be restored from sin to happiness. Behold, I say unto you, _*_wickedness never was happiness."_*
So we see this association being made throughout the BoM with sin and sorrow, and worthiness/repentance with happiness.
So when we are taught to associate these feelings/emotions with states of worthiness or spiritual cleanliness, it is no surprise to me to see this association being played out in reverse, where "bad" feelings lead to questions of personal worthiness, especially when it's hard to know if or when you are forgiven of past sins.
