He's also one of the only commentators who's properly understood this trade from the Caps' perspective. It's smart for them. Dubois is the best player they could probably get this summer, and they needed someone good. After the Gretzky chase it over, the team will rebuild. There's honestly very little risk here. By the time the Caps are rebuilt, if Dubois is still in Washington, he'll be much easier to trade or buy out.
That LA was able to get rid of PLD is such a credit to them! Good luck Washington! You’ve got an albatross contract on your books for the next SEVEN years!!!
As a Kings fan, I don’t think I ever saw Dubois act as an impact player once last season. Even in games where he scored multiple points (rare as those were), he seemed peripheral and honestly just fairly lucky that his shots went in
The Caps were still able to get some production from Mantha, but he was playing for a new contract. PLD mostly played under old school hard nose coaches. Carbery has a knack of working with younger players. Even if PLD puts up 40 points a season, The Caps need bodies that can skate.
What a gift the Caps handed the Kings. I didn’t think anyone would be dumb enough to take that contract without the Kings having to throw in major draft compensation.
As a Caps fan, I don't have a problem with the trade. Darcy needs to be on a team that can score 4+ goal per game and be able to crawl out of the early deficits he puts his team into. The Caps are not that team, they could not recover from all of the early goals he gives up and the late period momentum killers. He was a bad fit from day 1, anytime the Caps had success, it was with Charlie in net. PLD may not be a 100+ points per season player, but even getting someone that can score 20+ goals per season would be huge for how offensively challenged they have been. In the time that Ovi has been with the Caps, they have had one other player reach 40 goals(Semin did 1 time) and only Backstrom, Semin, Green and Oshie have reached 30 goals.
PLD's problem is not that he can't score and accumulate points, he can and most likely will. His problem is he is lazy and will stop skating at the worst times when things get tough for him. I'm a Kings fan and I thought bringing him to LA was a mistake from the beginning. However, there were times when he looked great but most of the time he just skated around casually not skating hard with his line and just flat out refusing to back check when the team needed him. He'll be very good for the Caps in the first year then drop off drastically after that. That's been his M.O. everywhere he's played. Maybe he'll change now that he's closer to Montreal where he really wants to be. 😉
@@irafair3015 "He'll be very good for the Caps in the first year" I think that's all they want. The Caps are on a one track mission to get Ovi the record. If PLD can help get him there and fall off a cliff afterwards, job done. They're not playing for anything else for a long long time.
@@meowza I think it's more than that. Both teams are dumping a player they have regrets signing. There is more upside to PLD. The Caps don't want to pay Darcy's salary to a goalie that's not their #1. They have no confidence in him between the pipes. Darcy to me seems like the way Varly was with the Caps, he may give up 4 or 5 goals in a game, but wont give up goal #5 or #6 if he needs to shut the door. The problem is the Caps no longer have the firepower to comeback from all the early goals Darcy gave up.
As much as people on the outside want to point and laugh at the Caps, and talk about contracts and terms, it's incredibly obvious how little about the Capitals they know. Ovi has two years left. We need someone to help dish the puck to him to beat Gretzky. In that time, it really doesn't matter that much if we win or lose as long as the young guys are putting their best foot forward in depth roles and the vets ride out their contracts. This trade cost us nothing, and in return we get 7 years to see if we can pull another Strome and make him reach his potential. If it doesn't work out, we're not going to be good in that time, it's fine.
its fine. washington gets a center that will play ok for 2 season, then they go into rebuild mode, by the time they need the cap, his contract will be over. best case scenario is he revives his career in washington. worst case is they start the rebuild which they have to do regardless
I've never understood teams that will take on locker room cancer type players and say we can fix them.... dudes been a problem everywhere he's gone. If he doesn't wake up his next team will be in the KHL or just out in the street

He makes everyone around him worse. And he doesn't give a shit about it. His only redeeming quality is his ability to talk eloquently about his game with the media. We in LA feel lucky to not watch him for the next 7 years. My condolences to the Caps fans. You deserve better.
Caps are happy to make the investment to help grt OVI to the top and for that, I applaud them. But that franchise over the next ten years looks very grim. They are going to need to find some gems in the draft to avoid a dark future
They already have lmao? Like truly the only things the capitals lack in terms of future prospects is /a/ top pairing dman to replace Carlson long term, and a top line center. Now they're not easy to get, they'll have to be bad or lucky with the lotto on it, but the Caps depth prospects with 2nd line ceilings are all quite good. McMichael, Lapierre, Iorio, Miroshnichenko, Protas, Trineyev, all extremely solid players.
All the Dubois criticism is absolutely warranted! However he's that 1 Player that can look like Hot Garbage during a Shift... and yet still score with 1 shiny Play! The NHL isn't a Daycare... but it seems u gotta Baby this Dude into success! He's got about 5-6 Prime years left... and if he shows up & he's your 2nd line Center... he's that Game Breaker who could bring u a Cup!!
Both teams trading away players that did nothing for them but both players still have the capacity to make an impact in the NHL. Fun fact: Kuemper faced an average of 15-20% more shots than Lindgren, a fact that showed it's head in the playoffs where Washington allowed 5.5 shots per game fewer than it's season average and 4.5-6 fewer than Kuemper's average game. Which means their style of game changed with Lindgren in net. A better defensive team than Washington could do well with Kuemper. It worked in LA for a bit and it worked in Arizona. For Dubois, a team needs to realize where he fits in and how to motivate him. If he wants that spotlight, see how he does with it. Telling him he's not good enough to play on the top line clearly isn't it, at least not by default. At the same time, figure out WHERE he fits on that line. Edmonton has McDavid feeding Hyman and Bouchard, and if you asked anyone before that started producing if it was smart, they'd have said no pretty quickly. But it does work. Finding that pairing means McDavid and Draisatl don't have to play together, at least not all the time. And when they do, both players have clearly improved on their capacities. When it comes to Dubois, I personally DON'T think we know what kind of player he is in the league, and I personally don't know if even he knows. He's clearly waiting for someone to feed him the answer, and maybe that's why it never clicks.
Laine is one dimensional where he only Shoots the Puck and doesn’t play Center. PLD Can play Center and wing. He Can Bring physical presence to the game (if he wants too) since Backstrom is not returning next season, PLD is considered to be a top Center that why they probably traded for him to replace Backstrom.
PLD is a super young, big, complete centermen who has shown in the past he can put up points. The Capitals saw a chance to acquire him for free. The downside is that if he's unhappy, then he basically throws a p!ssy-fit and ends up playing on your fourth line...

He didn't have a total washout, but his ability to change games was drastically altered due to change in play and chemistry with his teammates.
