Using Brighter And Bigger Front Sights and Red Dots?

  • Опубліковано 5 сер 2022
  • If you're in a fast, up-close situation where you have to use your firearm, it's unlikely that you will see a crystal clear front sight or your red dot as one does during traditional firearms training. In fact, there is a good chance you don't see anything and rely on instinctive shooting/point shooting/natural point of aim.
Knowing this, to increase your chances of getting any/some kind of visual cue that you are on target before you take a shot is preferable.
Using brighter and bigger front sights and red dots can potentially help provide you with more visual information before taking a shot in a life and death situation.

Agree 100%. As for someone who needs reading glasses my front sights a getting harder to see. My rifles have red dots or a scope so it's not a problem just my hand guns. Need to start getting my slides cut for dots. The joys of getting old lol.

Agreed 👍. Getting old really sucks. Lately I'm needing reading glasses as well, forcing me to outfit all my sidearms with red-dots.

I recently dug out my old IDPA/Pin Gun Heinie 1911 in 10mm from 20 years ago. Couldn't even see the tiny front sight through the tiny slit in the Bomar rear sight.

    As always great info! 👍
On both my Glock 43x and/or my Glock 19 (EDC) I go with large orange front sight and Holosun RDS with green circle-dot system. Outside force-on-force orange is quickly seen while indoors (church security) bright green stand out well.
Also … seldom mentioned: Guys with multiple guns, who may carry different guns at different times, each EDC gun should have the SAME sight type. Less confusion = greater survivability!

The Holosun ACSS reticle helps pick up the red dot a lot quicker.

I commonly and usually see green better than red or orange for competition but also see it great in low light. Usually because the berm is brown sand and soil which often masks the red or orange dots. But if it’s in a place with a lot of green and flora, I’d want a red one.

Shield plus. Trijicon tridium orange. And in daylight, that orange glows!. Good points cause now it makes sense of why the orange ring is so big. I dont stack dimes. But it definately swiss cheeses anything your point shooting at, without focusing on trying to get a perfect alingment. At night its not so bad but the only thing you see is the green glow center and its not that bright at times.

Don't laugh, but the best factory sights I have are on a Heritage Rough Rider 22 LR/22 Magnum single action revolver with a 6.5" barrel and adjustable rear sights. The sights are fiber optic (yellow-orange front and two-dot green rear). They really pop.

Single action is great for accurate target. True self defense shooting most likely won't involve real aiming. It's point and shoot and hope you end up not dead

I don’t understand why some sight manufacturers make sights with big neon dots on the front sight only to have to use the top edge of the sights for poa/poi. Meaning if you aimed by putting the dot where you want the round to go, your shots would be high.

Iron sights on hand guns are kinda following the concept of the shotgun bead, for combat distance & application as far as what I'm seeing. I've been running XS sights for decades now but this time I want to go w/orange front & no stripe on the rear sight. I just don't know if I want to go w/large dot or standard & I would consider a fiber optic it's their durability for concealed carry that worries me a little.

I do appreciate all that you share her knowledge and experience. The other day I was watching something that GBRS was talking about and it is the the technique they have used for years. It’s using instinctual shooting just using that back plate of the pistol. As long as you have a sound pistol grip and stance your shot placement should be consistent. What are your thoughts on that because it minimizes the time finding and lining up the sights?

Excellent observation! Great tutorial for real life as we get older and more decrepit.
I’ve been shooting pistols and rifles for decades and dead-on accurate with anything I shot as a kid. I’m 59 years old now and my mind and focus is still sharp as a tack, but my vision sucks. Getting older and wiser doesn’t fix your vision unfortunately, that’s only going to get worse.
I recently bought a Ruger LCP2 in .380 and I’ll be honest, I can’t see the f*cking sights. Welcome to aging eyes. If I had this mouse-gun in my 20’s, I’d have no problem seeing them.
So I picked up some fluorescent sight paint from the gun shop and painted the front sight. Much better now. I can totally see it. The rear sight is a problem now. I painted it fluorescent green. Bingo. I have a sight picture that looks like something from a 70’s black light poster but that’s what I need unfortunately.
The LCP2 isn’t for marksmanship but I was a marksman and missing the bullseye at 7 yards makes me sad. With the painted sights, I can get tighter groups than anyone with this mouse-gun half my age. I’m in great health. Always have been. A mystery since I’ve abused my body with glee all these years. My eyes and hearing suck. I can still climb a shear rock face. Go figure.
My job on tugboats and barges keeps me in top-notch shape. My body is fine for now but my eyes aren’t so good anymore.
So, I painted my sights on the mouse-gun. Got a red dot on the Max-9 just for fun. It’s great. I’m shooting like I did as a kid. Just a few adaptations for aging eyes.
Thanks for thinking about and addressing us older folks. You’re a great person.
Peace and aloha to you and yours always. 🤙🏼

A bright front sight is critical. That's why I upgraded the sights on my 43X to a set of yellow Trijicon HD XRs. The difference, for me, is night and day. With the brighter front sight, I'm able to pick up the dot quicker, making for faster shots on target. I love Trijicon's line of pistol sights; you can't go wrong with them!
