Mood directions are pretty difficult for beginners, so if you're going to use them, see if you can find a sew-along for either the pattern or the specific technique/piece you're trying to sew. Tiana's Closet is a FABULOUS resource of advice and free sewing patterns from a professional pattern drafter. She's relatively size-inclusive too (though not as inclusive as Mood).
I agree.. They tend to be sparse. . And the same goes for many of these free patterns. There's nothing more discouraging than directions with no details.
As a follow up to the comment about mixing and matching sleeves, it's really important to keep the original sleeve cap from the original pattern to get a good shoulder fit. You could expand this for a puff sleeve, etc., but I would recommend keeping that sleeve cap from the original and merging it with any new sleeve type to make for the best fit.
Thank you the most useful part of this video is the names of the sources of free patterns ,because there are many more when you visit them. I declared 2024 a year of sewing.
Love the encouragement to try out more complicated patterns even as a beginner, this is how I was able to actually find the motivation to keep learning! It was so much more rewarding to figure out all of the details of a pattern that I would actually love and wear vs making something “simple” that I didn’t love as much
Yes!! I’m such a huge proponent of learning as you go even if it means making mistakes along the way! That’s how I learned how to sew and I believe everyone is capable of growing their skills with a challenge💕
Oh girl you're missing one of my favorite sites for free patterns -and I think it would become one of your favorites too. Tiana's Closet. Please take a look there are TONS of free cute patterns. Wow you just popped up on my UA-cam feed today. So much information and excellent content for anyone participating in the Sew Frugal 2024 Challenge. Good job🎉
I made the Wide Leg Pants by Peppermint Magazine in a few days as my first ever sewing project once I learned how to use the machine, I found the instructions very clear and thorough to make very nice finishing touches and I made another pair for my sister later. I still use the pattern and instructions for the pockets for most other pants I made since because I love them so much! 10/10 recommend 🥰
I would sew a muslin for any new pattern that is completely different from anything I have ever made before or the outfit is for an event that is important for me or whoever I am making it for. There is one other instance where I would make a muslin and that is if the pattern is from a company that is new to me. It is far less expensive to make a muslin along where you make all the adjustments required than to do those changes to your good fabric.
I’m always lazy and skip the muslin part but need to be better about it! I wholeheartedly agree though that with new unfamiliar patterns a mock-up is a good starting point
I do the same. I use old sheets for mock ups as I have lots of fabric for adjustments and lots of mock ups (sometimes it just takes 3 lol) I would recommended new sewists use sheets then they don't have to panic about running out of fabric when making mock ups.
Thanks for all these recommendations! I've used patterns from Mood and The-Thread. From The-Thread I've printed two dresses patterns and one pants pattern that I've used and modified to change the style and make a couple of dresses and pants. Actually, during my Christmas break I made 2 pairs of pants with the pattern from The-Thread. They also have very clear and detailed instructions and a glossary of sewing techniques that have helped me tons when doing other projects. Mood has a lot of good patterns also on a wide category of clothing, but sometimes their instructions aren't clear or complete.
I agree, mood instructions aren’t the best, and I’m glad to know you’ve had good experiences with The Thread patterns…their instructions looked detailed!
This is such a lovely video with so many useful patterns! Thank you so much for compiling this 🥰 I will say, the subscribe button was up for a very long time to the point that it started to overwhelm me (I know, very silly but it did). Again, the video is great and I love these patterns! Will definitely tackle some of these ❤️

Regarding the sleeve pack I'd recommend checking if the sleeve heads align with the ones in the sewing pattern, not ditching them directly. Usually the sleeve head corresponds to the drafted armhole andthere might be differences that give you trouble later on...
Such a good point! If the sleeve is a set in sleeve you definitely have to pay attention to the sleeve head size, but usually if the sleeve has gathers along the sleeve head it’s easier to set into any armhole for a pattern

Thank you so much for this very helpful round up of free patterns. There are definitely a few I would like to try. I had no idea about Mood, and I thought their patterns looked great!
As someone who likes front opening dresses and blouses you don't need to use button holes, I just sew hooks and eyes [or hooks and make my own loops as they blend in better] and then if you want to you can simply sew a button on the outside over the hook part. You can also leave it with nothing or you can put a placket over to make it appear as though the 'buttons' are hidden [hides any hint of where you sewed the hooks on that way as well so you can sew through all the layers except the placket for extra strength if needed]. Another solution are press studs [I think they have another name in the US but not sure what it is, metal or plastic and they press together to fasten the garment]. I find the most secure is a combination of both hooks and press studs, so much faster than sewing button holes and easier to adjust if you gain or lose weight at a later stage as well.

Yeah, the Mood patterns unfortunately don't have the best instructions for beginner or confident beginners. I am hoping to make that dress in the summer so stay tuned :)
I always just print them all and then assemble them on the floor! It’s definitely a lot of pages but I love the accessibility of digital patterns…I know some people project the patterns onto fabric if there’s a projector option
@18.04 you talk about English v French patterns and say that Mood are English patterns. Are these not American as they are in inches and English patterns are in cm?
What I meant was the language is in English, as some French patterns have to be translated (especially some free ones). However you are right, American patterns come in inches and “English” or French are done in Cm
Thanks for watching! I know I’m not everyone’s cup of tea nor are my videos and that’s okay. Some mood pattern are beginner friendly especially if you are learning as you go, but some are not
Thanks for all these introductions. I am a plus size, and I would clearly want to know the sizes available 😅 And you should rest a little. Not speak so fast.
Quick tip; if you are having problems keeping up with a video, you can adjust the playback speed in the UA-cam settings. I found this video slow paced for what it was so set it to play faster but will slow down tutorials or how to videos.
Sure... anyone could sew if they don't mind wasting fabric... but it's a lot easier to start with easier projects, and cheaper. It's also much better to start with an instructor.
Everyone has their own way of sewing! Some like to dive right in and learn as they sew and for some smaller projects are a great place to start…I also highly recommend using thrifted sheets as fabric because it’s so much more budget friendly for sewing💕
When I learned in high school, I didn’t know you were supposed to use a difficulty level that matched your skills. I just picked whatever I liked, and sewed. Before going to college I bought a bunch of 100% wool plaid in two patterns and colors. I made a lined blazer, skirt with 26 pattern pieces for all the boxed pleats, lined slacks, lined jumper, a couple hats, and a lined cape. I also made a puffer style coat. I did this while my mom was in the hospital and couldn’t help at all. If I’d only chosen patterns that matched my level I would have ended up with a couple hats.
Trust me, I’m the last person who would ever change names to be “woke”. I’m sorry you don’t like the work “sewist” the only reason I like using it is because it’s a fun word! Thanks for watching
"Sewist" is contemporary. It's totally acceptable now and has been for about ten years. I like it! "seamstress" implies that I can be hired to sew for you... And that's not me. I sew for the pure enjoyment of it .
Seamstress does not imply only that I would sew for another. It is the female version of a woman sewing. As seamster implies a man sewing. Sewist removes all gender as so many stupid things do now. Adding new terms to it doesn't make it real. There is nothing wrong with the terms, definitions from my childhood. Not once when I have said I'm a seamstress has anyone said..oh you see for people. Nope..they usually asked where did I learn..which I reply..home ec. Which I probably now have to make that a gender free title..God knows how.

I persevered because I was interested to see the patterns, but please can you tone down and slow down. Not meant as a rude jibe, bet a helpful crit. So sorry to hurt your feelings but I'm sure your program will be good, once I get to see it and more enjoyable for others too.😢

Ok. Hear me out tho: 23:56 the Veronica top as a mini dress 😍😍😍😍
And style it with a pair of boots! So cute
Thanks for the list of sites. I'm large busted, so your choices aren't really to my taste. And no thank you to ruffles or puff sleeves for adults, but you do you. Glad for the variety of patterns available to suit all our tastes.
Thanks for watching, all those sights have even more patterns than just the ones I shared so there might be a style that interests you more :)
Wisconsin? Im in wisconsin too!
Yay!!
SW Wisconsin for me
Thanks
I wanna make the milkmaid dress
Right!! It’s such a pretty pattern and I’ve always loved that style of dress!
Hi I need to know how to widen the skirt of shorts thank you
Try searching a how to video about that on UA-cam! Chances are someone has made something a similar 💕

Please please do a video on the mood Perth dress. I am confident beginner sewer but the instructions are so confusing!
Yeah, the Mood patterns unfortunately don't have the best instructions for beginner or confident beginners. I am hoping to make that dress in the summer so stay tuned :)
Wisconsin here too 👋🏻
Yay!
Wrap dress!!!!
Tent dress pattern
So cute right!
✨
thank you
Hope you find some you LOVE!
do you have a trick or hack for downloading the pages? Coz 66 pages for a pattern is a lot and wont fit in my sitting room LOL
I always just print them all and then assemble them on the floor! It’s definitely a lot of pages but I love the accessibility of digital patterns…I know some people project the patterns onto fabric if there’s a projector option
the link in your blog does not lead to the veronica mood blouse pattern..
Hmmm…weird! I’ll check that
@18.04 you talk about English v French patterns and say that Mood are English patterns. Are these not American as they are in inches and English patterns are in cm?
What I meant was the language is in English, as some French patterns have to be translated (especially some free ones). However you are right, American patterns come in inches and “English” or French are done in Cm
Merci ! La blouse Cardinal est superbe et je la tenterais bien 👍❤
💕💕
Wisconsin? 😻✌️
Yes I am!! Moved here from Texas
En Grasser (aun grass aye): to fatten up (in this case, I believe meaning pregnancy)
Question, re : the maya dress. Uh does she have a youtube channel? Is she Bianca, The Closet Historian???????
I’m not sure? I haven’t made all of these or looked into it
I’d have liked to see at least one item from this list that you actually made.
I have a tutorial coming in a month or so for one of the mood dresses, so stay tuned💕
I am having flashbacks to the 1970's looking at these patterns.
What goes around comes around and the great styles from the past are back!
Do you mean English or American?
Sorry…I mean American
I like Wide Leg culottes and Wide Leg Pants. Thank you
They are so cute!
Thank you for great info. Very chatty to much personal comments are not necessary. MOOD is not for beginner's.
Thanks for watching! I know I’m not everyone’s cup of tea nor are my videos and that’s okay. Some mood pattern are beginner friendly especially if you are learning as you go, but some are not
Thanks for all these introductions. I am a plus size, and I would clearly want to know the sizes available 😅
And you should rest a little. Not speak so fast.
A majority of these come in very inclusive size ranges
Quick tip; if you are having problems keeping up with a video, you can adjust the playback speed in the UA-cam settings. I found this video slow paced for what it was so set it to play faster but will slow down tutorials or how to videos.
jjj
Sure... anyone could sew if they don't mind wasting fabric... but it's a lot easier to start with easier projects, and cheaper.
The dress patterns are ridiculous and not feminine. They look so sloppy. The blouses and slacks outfits are very nice.
Everyone has their own perspective of what they like and that’s the beauty of sewing is you don’t have to make anything you don’t feel inspired by💕
Its seamstress for women and seamster for men. Stop changing the names to fit woke.
Thank you ! I can’t and won’t use the made up word “sewist”
@@kathyhernandez7121 You do realize that all words were "made up" at some point, right? Don't be a rude granny because you can't keep up when a language evolves. JFC
Could you take a breath or pause from time to time in the commentary?
My teacher days translate into my videos😂 gotta be efficient!
You can slow the speed down from your end if that’s helpful. I couldn’t keep up either. @dorothymccarthy4376
You do speak a little fast sometimes. It takes practice to slow down but it's worth it. But I do enjoy listening to you.
Talk, talk, talk. You must be interested in the sound of your own voice.
Thanks for watching, I’m sorry it wasn’t your cup of tea, this video being focused on taking about free sewing patterns…
I fully agree. The voice also comes over far too shrill. Eventually I turned off the sound, and there's too much talk.
I persevered because I was interested to see the patterns, but please can you tone down and slow down. Not meant as a rude jibe, bet a helpful crit. So sorry to hurt your feelings but I'm sure your program will be good, once I get to see it and more enjoyable for others too.😢
Calm down. If you don't like it just move on. It's not necessary to voice your criticism.
