Very interesting doco. Its good to see some thing so 'mass' produced that still had so much of the personal skills used. and the gentleman who is 88! he looks much younger. It shows what having a good purpose in your day does for you. To all the workers there my very bestwishes.
Had my first pair for 16 years. On one trip I wore them every day for 5 months Funnily though they eventually died while walking around Italy. My current pair are are about ten years old now. From desert to snow they hold my old ankles and keep my false knees going.

Scarpa boots are bad ass
The construction of the boot is glossed over. There are actually three types of construction used: board lasting, slip lasting, and direct attach. Since the method shown involves glue it's probably either board or slip lasting. The latter is used for highly flexible trail runners and climbing shoes, and they probably won't be resoled, at least not without highly specialized equipment. It looks like board lasting could be converted to a goodyear welt but building the midsole would be very complicated, and the sole is probably too thick to be stitched. So the crux of the Scarpa manufacturing is glue and automation. They used the term "hand stitching, but it's clear that the host is not very familiar with actual hand stitching, which doesn't use machines at all. So this was basically "hand stitching with a machine" haha.
After converting to a goodyear welt, probably using a gemel, the midsole would be stitched directly to the welt and then the outsole, heel stack, and heel lift would be glued to the leather midsole. It would be quite a job but might be worth it if the uppers are durable. The other option would be to "shave" the lugs off of the vibram outsole and then just glue on a new halfsole/heel combo. The boot would be about the same weight as before the resole, which the conversion to a goodyear welt would make it quite a bit heavier.

+Jay Cupples They're well worth it. That focus on control of the manufacturing process is half of the reason we chose to work with SCARPA on our boot program. The other half, of course, is that the feature sets of the Grand DRU GTX and the Charmoz Pro GTX are perfect for mountain hunters!

I did think tho, that these high quality boots' soles would not be "glued" .... but rather stitched AND glued ... etc
Lost my Scarpa Manta boots at Queenswood Park near Leominster three weeks ago. Boo hoo. I love them, they've been all around the world and over twenty years of memories.
So would it be safe to say that since the glue is applied via heat that these shoes would not be good for the blistering temps of the southwestern united states, or other desert country's? Ive owned a few pair of scarpas and always love the attention to detail, I never really noticed the bottoms separate during long hike in the grand canyon or in southern california, guess its just something I now thought about since I never dry my boots super close to a fire. Wonder what scarpa would say to this?
SCARPA will tell you NOT to dry your boots too close to the fire--it is entirely possible to get sole separation if you do. You will probably be okay in most environmental conditions--as hot as it gets in the southwest, I don't think it reaches the threshold for delaminating the glue.
I'm having trouble choosing between the Zen and the Mojito (and not the Hydrogen GTX). I'm going to be doing long-term (think several years+) round the world travel and will only have 1 pair of shoes + flip flops. Most of the time I'll be walking cities and easy trails but will also be doing some multiple day backpacking. Also may do some yard work etc. Although the Hydrogen GTX feel amazing on my foot I fear the mesh upper is just not durable enough for everyday (all weather/season) environment. The Zen feels nice but I worry it's just too stiff for walking hours and hours each and every day. Any suggestions? I only weight 130 lbs so I won't completely destroy the lighter Mojitos. Thoughts?

zen is better ,with GTX, more suitable for both city and backpacking

Scarpa or zamberlan?
We currently work with SCARPA for our boots. The Zamberlan that we carried was good, but it was so mountaineering-oriented that for anything but the hardest sheep country, it wasn't practical. Our SCARPA boots cover a range of terrain types.
Are all Scarpa boots made in Italy?
Are any made in China?
None are made in China, as far as we know. Some of the lower-priced boots are made in a SCARPA-owned-and-operated factory in Romania; these ones still have excellent quality.
@@kuiuultralight Thanks much. The reason I asked is a lot of Chinese leather products are from cats and dogs. I would rather not own a pair of boots made from the hide of "man's best friend".

Most of SCARPA's highest-level technical products are made with synthetic fabrics, so no need to worry about it at all.

Can't speak to their entire product line--the co-branded boots we designed and build with SCARPA are all made in Europe.

Lies lies lies! Scarpa shoes are outsourced. They are MADE IN CHINA. I have just ordered a pair of Scarpa Mavericks and it says "Made in China", that means very very poor quality! What a ripp off! I want my money back.
Curtis, it probably depends on the style. Their highest-quality technical boots are made in Italy, in the factory shown. We don't have the CGI skills to fake up an entire factory tour!
The Mavericks are made of synthetic tech fabric, not leather, I expect that is the difference between where they are made.
