  • Short timelapse video of the new Elbe River ferry GREENFERRY 1 unloading and loading again at Brunsbüttel, Germany. The roro and passenger ferry route was only launched three weeks ago on 1 March 2021. The new line connects Cuxhaven on the southern bank of the Elbe with Brunsbüttel on the northern bank. Ferries such as this are essential since there is no fixed Elbe River crossing west of Hamburg, which lies some 100 km from the North Sea.
Since the Elbe is already quite wide in its lower estuary, and since the ferry travels along the river for some 15 nautical miles, the whole journey takes about one hour.
For anyone who likes to see the world's largest container ships up-close, or who enjoys a trip at sea, a crossing is highly recommended. Passenger round trips start from as little as EUR 15 and there is a cafeteria / snack bar / coffee shop on board. See www.elbferry.com for more info and schedules.
GREENFERRY 1 used to be in service on the Norwegian West Coast as the FANAFJORD. The ship is powered by liquified natural gas (LNG).

Yes. One ferry on a three-hour cycle: 60 minute crossings and 30 minutes at each port.
