  • Join Jason for Part 2 as he embarks on a mission to Mauritania, West Africa, to introduce mercury-free mineral processing.
This video provides an insider view at MBMM’s recent support for to a development project by the non-profit Pact, working together to demonstrate mercury-free mineral processing solutions for the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. Did you know the ASGM sector directly employs an estimated 20 million people around the world? The ‘informal’ gold sector employs more individuals than the industrial mining sector, and by a huge margin.
In this video series, Jason is providing consulting services for Pact’s development project, which is financed by the European Partnership for Responsible Minerals. Jason’s state-of-the-art mineral processing equipment is installed in Mauritania and is tested head-to-head against local methods which rely heavily on the use of toxic mercury. This unique development project approach was conceived by Pact, and through private sector partnership with Pact’s local partner Magma, and their gold focused entity named Sahel Clean Gold. Check out the weblinks below to learn more.
This video showcases the unique setup enabling mineral test-work in the ASGM context. The approach employed by the project partners enabled controlled testing and sampling methods, to directly compare the efficiency of different methods, and to design a locally adapted solution, for the Mauritanian context.

I feel for the guys whose job is open-air mercury incineration .
Don't quote me on this, its what ive been told by a dozen or so scientists,Doctors, experts etc.they say the general handling of liquid room temperature mercury is relatively safe .
What's deadly AF is exposure to mercury vapors . Smoke and atomized mercury is easily absorbed/inhaled and it will eventually unalive a person .
Wash your hands after handling it because eating it Deadly as well.

Elemental mercury is not bioavailable and is therefore not toxic. ...keeping it that way is a whole different story, though.
The miners don't have issues from mining. It's the runoff (which Jason demonstrated is significant) that's the real problem. Burning it off for refining is horrible, too.

    • @ska042
      @ska042 4 місяці тому +5

@@nolanwhite1971 Yeah handling the mercury isn't much of a health issue unless they have open wounds or something, but the process of burning it off from the amalgam definitely is. Maybe not enough for acute toxic effects since they're doing it outside, but that'll definitely give you chronic issues over time...

Great work Jason! That mercury filtration through cloth with bare hands followed by burning off the Hg in the alcove with a Mapp gas is terrifying! I had a read of the report, looks like it's a no brainer apart from the upfront cost to the operator? I imagine many of these companies are running on minimal initial capital and on going costs are more acceptable than initial costs? It would be very interesting to do a follow up report in 18 months and see if anything has changed. Excellent work on your part! If these methods are adopted, it will make significant improvements for the local operators across the board.

It would be interesting to build a Shaker Table with a Recirculation Loop on a 20:1 Turndown Ratio.
This allows Material to pass through the System multiple times. This is a Continual Process Loop.
The way it's being done now (and for the last lotsa thousand years) is a Batch Process Method.
The process might be more efficient and faster to run a Coarser Grind and then send the Material not in the #1's back through the Hammer Mill.

The report is inconclusive but was written by locals so as good as you can expect. Contamination of the roller mills is the problem. You need to convince the miners to do a scientific test not a "good enough" test. If the shaker table was missing 25% of the gold it would be visible in the tailings, the 25% never made it to the table.

Definitely more environmentally friendly! I would recommend customizing some crucible tongs, some that conform to the crucible providing better support. That one used came with the smelting kit, it has a major design flaw. The crucible deteriorates after some use, having to pour with those tongs will eventually break the edge causing a spill!

That is some very interesting results at the end, Jason. Anytime you can do recoveries without mercury, is a plus in my book. The nursing part of me was screaming at my phone, when the man squeezed out the mercury without gloves on. That is extremely dangerous. At a hospital where I worked, a patient became unstable and almost died from mercury poisoning. Apparently the blood pressure gauge, mounted on the wall at the head of the bed, had lost its 'cap' over the mercury containment portion. A small amount had gone into the patient's bed. About 6 hours later, she was deathly ill and covered in a red, raised rash. The problem was that no one could figure out what was going on and thought it was a medication reaction. Nope. Mercury poisoning.
I appreciate that you shared this video and are helping these miners to get the most gold out of their ore without mercury. It's like saving a life to me. Blessings from Alabama ❤️

The improvement in recovery using GRG vs CMA does mean that they will make more money once the initial investment is paid off.

Ultra fine panning and it will be 120 minus " scrubbins" your table if there is zinc in the amalgam , it will literally act as a sail on the table.

If that is steel from the cone mill, would a magnet easily keep it out of the shaker table? Anddddd... You said that later.

It would be more than heroic iv you find a method that helps them reduce the mercury usage...

If only they received more more for the 99% of the work they do to get the gold instead of pennies while the gold hoarding merchants who literally do nothing get it all .

Just curious if you have run the mercury rich tailings over your shaker table? Would the mercury behave in a reliable manner for recovery. And would gold saturated mercury behave the same as raw gold?
