Cyclades - Mykonos and Delos - Sailing Greatcircle (ep.62)

Easy cruising from Syros to the famous island Mykonos where we anchor all alone again in Ormos Kolpos just south of Mykonos town. Good protection for the strong south winds and an interesting dinghy ride to the harbour. After Mykonos we head for Naxos, passing the ancient town of Delos.

I noticed that this year you have added a "sock" to cover your Code 0, the front most and the lightest sail. I wonder what is your experience with this type of sail socks. I always found those difficult to raise and lower, and after a strong wind day at mooring or anchor the covered sail would be sometimes exposed and tangled. I also thought that your code 0 had a strip of UV covering at the leach and foot. Did the sail maker talked you into it?

Narūnas Bukauskas our code 0 had a ‘sprayed’ uv strip that wasn’t protecting the D4 material well enough and came partially off. We asked the sailmaker for a cover to extend the life span of the sail. It works quite well, only problem is that the halyard we use for the cover originates half a meter higher in the mast than the top of the sail. The halyard pulls de top of the cover a bit open which gives the wind the chance to damage it. Haven’t found a solution yet, and had damage when we had suddenly 50 knots when 20 was forecasted. Our plan is to remove the cover on days with to much wind. If we would leave the boat for a week or longer we would remove the sail. Have asked technique-voile whether they know a solution for the top of the cover.

But in general the system with the elastic bands and 2 straps works fine to tighten it over the full 30+m

Thanks for sharing - and all the best on your sailing adventures, will follow closely! I think the best that we could do is to pack the sail away, especially if it is expected to be windy. In the end it was better for the sail and for the rig. Solid UV strips would probably make most sense if the sail remains on the stay.
