    Neville spent his entire career in an elite, trophy hoarding team, during which time many players who were world class in their own right were either sold on, or just didn't make the cut.

      I think Rashford as well. You don’t go from a 30 goal season to being a bad player next season. And you don’t do it on your own. Often players has fluctuations in their outputs: Giggs goes 13 goals to 1 early on. Scholes had a run 14, 9, 2 in the Premier League. And these guys were in a team overflowing in goal-scorers. They were a team, not just loading it all up on the shoulders of one bloke.

    Bloody good vid, needed to be said. Many of today's younger fans never saw him play, and many of the older ones can't see past their own bias and tribalism (ABU) to admit he was a great player. As a United fan of similar age to Gary, I followed his career closely for many years, and while I played right wing for much of my own playing career, it was when I finally got my chance at right back that I felt most comfortable on the field - and I think it had a lot to do with having watched Gary play. He was a bit of a Djokovic of Football, he didn't do anything flashy or remarkable, but he absolutely nailed all the basics and had no weaknesses, that is what made him a great player, and is also what makes him overlooked and forgotten vs his flashier contemporaries. He never scored an overhead, or from half way, the women gravitated to the supermodel he played next to etc, but Mr consistent he was, thorn in every team's side.

      I'm a huge Federer fan, but suggesting Djokovic has nailed the basics/consistency but doesn't do anything flashy or remarkable is the opinion of an utter casual imo

      @tomr200199 5 місяців тому

      @yesdcotchin utter casual... well that's a comment of an utter bell. If you had some nous, you'd see that it was a huge compliment I was paying, and it was in the context of other players that took the plaudits more often, yet you focused on one word I used while quickly typing out a post. That's just weird I'd say.

      @roronoalaw7772 well done for missing the point. You do know you can compare attributes of two humans without meaning all attributes are identical? I have legs and arms, and so does Messi, doesn't mean I'm saying I'm the best to ever play football.

    • @abhijiththampi
      @abhijiththampi 4 місяці тому

      I think a better comparison would have been David Coffin. No notable standout features yet a strong work ethic and never say die attitude going up against often stronger and more talented players. There is no Djokovic in football. Messi is Federer and Cristiano is Nadal.

    As a neutral fan of football for 30 odd years, I’m glad someone finally addressed this. But to get straight to it, I feel like the knocks Gary gets is because he was a one-club man. Never “challenged” himself to play abroad. Great Premier League RB of all time definitely but nowhere else.

    Gary Neville was an amazingly consistent professional. Much like Denis Irwin he did the basics to perfection 99 times out of 100. I am so blessed to have watched both play in their prime. I think many people tend to look for flashiness and value that far more than simplicity and performing the basics correctly. Gary Neville is a study in professionalism and a model to younger players.

    Am a Liverpool fan but i generally like to see things objectively cause i care about good football first , people tend to 1 - follow the narrative of a player more than what actually happens or happened when they play/played and 2 - people get stuck on the flashy things in the wrong way , take Suarez and Zlatan for example they were flashy but they were that all the time diffrence is most players that people think were better than someone like Neville had only a few glimpses of that flashyness and then an empty unimportant void of mediocre play where as Neville was by default a better than average player playing week in week out better than average without the doing or needing to do anything more cause what he already did by default worked like charm , even Suarez and Zlatan that i mentioned were for the most part of their careers in non-perfect teams and sometimes they had to pull out the extra flashy stuff to compansate for their teams overall lacking play as attackers , Neville didnt need to do that yes but also no one else that ever played football would also need to do that in that United team , now show me which players could do what was actually needed in that squad and that could do it just aswell as Neville , spoiler there arent a lot of names and arguably they could be more liabilities than assets in this case .

    Gary Neville is a legend. Pure and simple. Could David Beckham or Ronaldo in his first stint at United have been the creative forces they were, without the security they had behind them? It’s quite true that today, the position in front of the RB is a very different animal, but Gary Neville can’t be judged harshly based on an era of football he hasn’t taken part in. The class of the man was shown when he chose to retire when he knew he couldn’t perform any longer for United. No step down. Retired. You can call that no ego or all ego, but he knew that the team was more important than his cheque book or his feelings. He takes the banter from his fellow hosts on TV with more grace than they deserve, considering they have about a tenth of the winners medals he has. There’s a reason that he has a good reputation in analysing the matches now for Sky, and it’s not because he was fortunate to be in a good team, I’ll tell you that much. He watched, listened and learned. The only luck you can accuse Gary Neville of is that he got to do something he loved for a living. But he worked for that, never took it for granted.
    What’s funnier as a United fan is that it’s an argument if he is the best RB of the Ferguson era, and that’s only because Denis Irwin had a wand at the end of both legs.

    Well said. Gary Neville is a legend when United was a team of legends. I have supported the greatest football team for over fifty years and Gary is hands down the best right back we have had in that time. I`m used to as all United fans are, the unhinged hatred and pure jealousy towards our glorious club and their attempts to rewrite history and constantly put us down. An idiot in his twenties told me the other day that Roy Keane was over rated and only looked good because of his team mates ! I was going to kick off and go full Scottish on him but instead I shook my head and quietly told him if you believe that you are delusional and know nothing about the great game and should never speak again. I hated Stevie G. As all United fans do. That's our job but I respected him as a player because second to being a Red Devil I`m a football fan. People that don`t respect are not worth listening to or talking to.
