Surprisingly this is my adhd ass' most satisfying job. It's like 10. Buttons and plays like whack a mole or ddr. Leylines is a buff for you, yutb you are pretty much just trying to cast a much fire 4 as possible. Triple cast and swift just make them instant so you don't forget them. Meanwhile I space out when playing tank, forget what every chole does on my sage and forget all my mudra combos on ninja
This guy just sucks at explaining so pretty much just use fire spells until you have like 1000mp then use ice spells to get the ice phase so you'll regenerate mp. The other abilities mostly recover mp or help with it and lower and raise your defense. The fire phase buffs damage.
For fuck's sake, stop labeling your basic lack of attention skills as a serious disorder.

The rotation is mind-numbingly simple. The problem is when mechanics force you to move you. Triple-Cast mitigates most of the pain, but you have to know the fight pretty well in order to understand when to use it, and when you can afford to just slide cast instead.
Paying attention to the mechanics while doing the rotation and using Triple-Cast at the right times is a LOT harder than it sounds.
Exactly, that is one huge drawback. If you too many things happening + the needed experience for the encounter. So black mage are supposed to be used after you know the boss mechanics makimg black mage bad for starting
This is why I love the "which class is the hardest" arguments. It should be more specific to which class has the hardest rotation and which class is the hardest to play well in end game content.
Want an easy way to keep the rotation in your head? Spend an hour hitting a dummy, trying to keep your rotation going while randomly dodging AoEs. A friend can help with markers to simulate telegraphs.
Things become a lot easier when you no longer have to think about your rotation.
This is why I use Blackmage as parse/speed run job, while using range DPS or Redmage for progressing.
So first I familiarize the fight, progressing and clearing it. After I feel comfortable, I would just use BLM for faster clear since I already know the safe spot.
It's a bad class for progressing content, but it is really good for farming.

Step 1: tell the boss to not attack.
Ignore everything this dude said and start with Ice. Make sure to only use ice the entire fight. You are no longer a black mage but now a ice mage. Congrats.
Better idea. Keep switching constantly so you get those paradox casts. BECOME PARADOX MAGE

Even samurai would qualify to this stance. It’s arguably one of the easiest melees. However their remark isn’t without merit. A lot of people are under the illusion that black mage is super complex, while it is not.

@@livingreverie5951 but you can move and eat a small dps loss, in the next pull you can adjust the timing of things and be fine. BLM really isnt that difficult, even with the casting part. Its not immobile anymore and it can just plant the leylines during a moment when theres less movement or where they dont have to move out of it to dodge a mechanic.

Yes, 23+ button combos while dodging boss mechanics, hoping you don't miss the paradox proc while hoping you don't miss that thunder proc or miss count a spell, and hope your healer is good cause you ain't moving. I mean, I started black mage cause it's a challenge but damn "it's easy" is a kick in the teeth.
Well if I knew it was that simple I would have played it years ago.
BLM is very much the easy to learn hard to master. The difficulty of the job tends to mirror the content you are playing often. So easier content often makes the job feel like a breeze while moving into Savage content requires alot of understanding of your tools to maintain your uptime.
For anyone trying the job out though: (Unpopular opinion) You can very much figure out if you like the job or not by level 35. If casting is your thing; this is your job.
I am currently lvl 33 giving BLM another go because it looks cool and fun at higher lvls... But my experience so far has felt so clunky due to these long casting times 😭 like I have no problem being basically a turret but I always debate between moving from mechanics immediately or finish casting and pray it doesn't go off before I can get away...
the rotation isnt the hard part its keeping uptime and having to deal with effect that force you to move. as moving loses dps if you don't time your cast correctly. but sometimes that doesn't even help if its a long going attack.
ah yes, the perfect scenario when your enemy is a target dummy. Not all dreams are real. Don't stare into the abyss too hard.

The rotation is really simple, the hard part is keeping uptime on mechanics and planning your abilities around PF dubious strats
Hes also talking abou the most basic bare bones version of playing called the standard rotation, there may only be a few abilitys used buy tying to keep uptime and not let dots drop will be the hard part, not to mention learning the non standard gameplay which is what most black mages will aim for. You should also learn when to use transpose correctly. Blackmage is the most complicated class to play depending on how much you wana get into it
Nonstandard is not required to be good at black mage. You dont need to do it even for savage/ultimate, and if you want to do it half of the optomization comes from transposomg i to astral fire out of umbral ice if you have a firestarter proc whoch is like half of the damage optimization of nonstandard. All of the hard stuff put together is like 1% of your dps, and you're probably going to curbstomp every other job dps-wise not doing it provided you do your standard rotation correctly and dont drop casts all the time

This is the standard rotation from the balance & icy veins. It works best with a spellspeed build so sps>det>=dh>crit
I think the big thing about BLM that makes it so hard to pull off is that it actually calls for clipping in some cases. It is true that the clipping is paid back in three swiftcasts, it still tickles that part of the brain that sees this as a bad thing in literally every other circumstance, and thus you hesitate or think you've done something wrong.
Like, seriously, the NIN and SMN rotation memes during Shadowbringers are preferable to "intentional clipping," and I say that AS one of those Summoners XD
Is it worth it to burn both triplecasts on opener usually? I know that using the 2nd one means you cover both despairs which have longer cast times normally but ive felt like endwalker fights always have some kind of movement early on where you probably want to save a triplecast for a mechanic a minute into the fight.
I guess the answer to this would be to tailor my opener depending on the fight but i cant help but feel naked not following the guideline of burn 1 triplecast for dps save 1 cast for mechanics lol
Its fine to save the second one for mechanics yea! It’s not a big deal dps wise. Gained uptime is worth more than bursting slightly harder.
@@Juliacare Alright cool. Im at the point where I feel comfortable with standard rota and im just trying to make sure I'm not missing anything important before I start trying to learn nonstandard.
Mostly concerned because I've seen how even minor differences can really screw things up. For example, in thordan unreal if someone pulls even a second too early it can screw up like half of my opener because the bait puddles that drop are too large to slidecast out of and if I spend a second hardcasting in it I'm garunteed to get hit by it which will also interrupt any hardcast I may be doing at that time. It also means it misaligns my gcd's and where I'd usually triple cast fire 4's in time for dragon's eye and not lose any uptime I'll likely lose uptime in that part. In that sense I was wondering if there was any specific importance to the 2nd triplecast because by doing that you're pushing your rotation ahead by about a second, which may be an important consideration for things like aligning your UI phase with a mechanic that requires a few gcd's worth of movement you could simply paradox + proc cast for rather than have to use a triplecast.
@TheArnoldification if youre thinking that far then you shouldnt have issues determining this on a fight by fight basis. See if it works for you on a specific fight and adjust until it does.

It is easy with openers and such but u have to stand still a lot and u have basically no shielding or healing. U can jump to a friend and then back to ur circle. So unless u know ur boss fights in and out something like a summoner would prob be easier since u don’t have to worry about interruption and u have healing with phoenix and most classes are kinda easy to get down btw (lv 90 majority of all classes in game missing paladin and white mage working on it). But bm is the one I have the hardest time playing since ur constantly casting interruptible spells and ur confined to a circle on ur 2 minutes burst. I find samurai lot easier since u basically learn ur opener, positionals and then u just ur kenki when u can, keep up ur dot iaijutsu and use minds eye on repeat for shield and kenki and u can also help ur healer by using ur class sustain to heal yourself.
This clip was made to dispell the idea that black mage is too hard to play. Its not, its a very archaic concept to think that.
To counter argue, blm has one of the biggest barriers any dps has access to, you have more on demand instant casts than a red mage making you more mobile in key situations, summoner is indeed easier to play but thats not what this video is about, summoners phoenix heals are set in stone and cannot be controlled meaning theyre borderline useless as it rarely aligns with actual damage, even if youre out of instant casts you can use the transpose rotation and run circles around healers and red mages at a minimal dps loss. True you have to stand in a circle to burst but this can just be delayed if it aligns with mechanics, usually without costing a usage, and burst windows almost never align with mechanics.
And then I do roulettes with friends and get a lvl 70 dungeon and its a whole ass different rotation

This isn’t the transpose rotation so it technically is easy. With transpose windows you can take a full college course in black mage. ❤
Exactly. Non standard rotations can infinitely get difficult. The standard rotation shown here is fairly easy
can someone explain, how to use Paradox after 2 Ice Spells or same after 4 Fire spells? I thought i get Paradox only, after i changed from full Ice to Fire.

The rotation isn’t what makes it hard. Positioning and learning to stutter step and save cast time is what makes it hard. But you’re right it’s not as hard as people make it out to be.

Thats indeed the only difficult part. It ensures all your cooldowns are rolling and you have a sharpcast thunder ready.

@@NordicCarved You can definitely forgo one of the triple casts and simply use it on movement. Its technically even possible to hold both but then you might have issues using all your ogcds

Why use ley lines and triple/ swift cast at the same time?
Leylines reduces recast time as well as cast time. You use triplecast and swift to weave in all of your ogcds and because of the recast reduction it’s still beneficial to have leylines up while doing this.
Wait wait wait!! And the brutal cost of each magic?? The fire magic depletes quickly your magic points! When BLM has the opportunity o use the transpose? 🤯🤯(Sorry, i'm still an old BLM)
Rotation wise it's actually easy, yes.. The hard part about black mage is optimizing and planning ahead during the raid so you can ABC
If you mess up even one time, you end up with zero mana, unable to do anything, so you have to use Lucid Dreaming, which feels real bad considering you can recover all your mp without it you didn't mess up. I think black mage is the most punishing yet rewarding class if you play it right.
If you mess up you can just start your ice phase again, no problem whatsoever
@@Juliacare That's only IF you have MP. If you don't, you around doing nothing for a few seconds looking silly and dropping valuable DPS. Then after you get your Umbral Ice, you still don't have enough for Blizzard III, so you have to wait until your MP gets higher, or spam Umbral Soul which is an inherent DPS loss. That seems like a pretty big punishment just for messing up your rotation. In other classes, you mess up your rotation, you just start over like nothing happened, but with Black Mage, you literally have to think on the fly, and are handicapped until you get your MP back. It's definitely not as simple as just going into your ice phase like nothing ever happened. You're missing out on a ton of damage all because you messed up your rotation once. That seems pretty punishing to me, which also means it's super high reward for not messing up.
@@Kenshin6321just don't mess up the rotation. Its not too difficult to count to 3. As for the MP dropping thing, the only moment where that really happens is if you die and then youre already dropping huge amounts of dps so it doesnt matter too much if you wait for a gcd or two longer. So long as you dont die you can fire spam till you have no mana left, going into ice phase is mp free.
@@Juliacare People make mistakes, especially in the heat of the moment. It's even more true for people who are just now trying to learn BLM. Saying "Just don't mess up the rotation" is like telling someone to just get a 100 on every test in school and you'll never have problems. That's not realistic, especially for newcomers. One of the mistakes I commonly made when I was learning BLM was accidentally casting Blizzard 1 instead of Blizzard 3, which completely deactivates your stance. That's a pretty big deal because you screwed yourself by messing up. Compare that Summoner, and say messed up by not using all your charges before switching summons, you miss out on DPS, but it's not like you're completely out of options. That's why I say the class is punishing, but rewards you with very high DPS for not making a mistake.
Remeber though that the only resource that really requires you to deal your most effective dps (fire 4) is mana.
BLM is punishing in general it is true but recovering your rotation even if its not a death isnt that punishing compared to pratically all DPS jobs. You dont massive resources built like MCH, RDM, or RPR or completely misalign your rotation like MNK, SAM or DRG.
You are definetly not wrong that people will make mistakes, but even if you do BLM very easily can just pick back up from where they left off with just 800 mana.

As a trailed just getting out of ARR, getting my jobs to 50 to see what I want to play as I took sum to 50 first, black mage was honestly the most punishing being a new player, often going into trials and raids and even dungeons blind not knowing what to do in the fight made it feel really punishing, however going back to it now knowing what bosses and the general tactics of players often just dragging half the dungeon, it feels much better.
Level 50 is a tough level too, because most classes don't get their good abilities until later. Whenever I play a 50 dungeon, I can't believe it used to be Endgame content. As you get closer to max level, every class just feels better and has more QoL changes.

But isnt that the wrong opener? Normaly u start under LL go into Astral into double tranpose and after that u go Umbra :o thats just the simple basic opener for blm who are just playing blm from time to time :O

Black Mage may be easy, but it is a slog to level it up to 90.
All I hear is, "Start with fire 3....blah blah....play a class that doesn't require so much work that you are usually out dps's by bards. I mean yeah technically you can do top dps....like once in your life. But all this work isn't worth it. Play something enjoyable to play.

It's a lot easier than it sounds, since you have 2 seconds between each fire cast to remember what the next ogcd will be. Casting the same spell 4 times in a row really frees up the headspace to focus on the additional spice
And now sharp cast doesn't exist anymore 🥲

Slidecasting is the garbage that made me stop playing casters. Using server ticks/lag to cast when you shouldn't be able to.
