Ah: Gradient CLASSIC. I make all my art (a lot) on photoshop for 20 years.. my computer went down (shocker) and had to reinstate my photoshop... among other many things. You helped me greatly see something that's an old comforting friend.
Some other tips: Try holding space while creating or resizing to move the gradient (similar to shape tool). right-click (windows) to bring up the HUD color picker right on the canvas or alt-click to color pick off the canvas without a dialog. You can access the transparency stops and all attributes of the gradient in the properties panel. Drag on the circle rim to rotate or size a gradient.
VERYVERY NICE TIP. THANK YOU SO MUCH. After Photoshop was updated and renewed, the gradient part changed like that of the illustration, so it was too hard to control, but after watching this video, I converted it to classic mode and found peace of mind again. Thanks a lot.
Many thanks Aaron! Just two mins in, you flagged “classic gradient” and you have answered my question...(I can see how some people may like to look at the effect without an arrow, but by seeing the gradient line I find it 20 times easier to fine tune my line with more accuracy) Thanks again.
The first video of yours I came across was "5 Beautiful Effects with Gradients," which changed my world. It was only maybe a month ago? Since then I've been hooked, going through your videos like a woman possessed. Now watching this video I feel like I've come full-circle! Thanks so much for what you do, from one Chicagoan to (I think?) another!
Awesome Aaron! I really enjoyed seeing how you seamlessly integrated the new feature into the artwork. Your tips are always incredibly helpful and practical, and I can't wait to try them out in my own designs. Keep up the fantastic work! 🔥🔥🙏🙏🙌🙌
Very nice information on the new gradients. The only thing you missed was showing how the Transparent part of the gradient works. You mentioned it but for some reason, you skipped over showing how it works. I have been told that it is supposed to be usable for adding portrait vignettes over a background, but have not been able to find out how to make it work; I guess the transparent portion of the new gradients must be very complex. Other than that your presentation was great I learned a lot. I love your method of presentations, very clear, crisp and easy to follow along. Thanks
Great tutorial thank you! there is a big issue regarding gradient that has been adressed to Adobe support service for years and never was solved : times to times when you export your work in JPG and if by any chance there are any gradients, the gradients are not exported. To do so, you have to flatten your work then export it. It's a massive pain in the neck. So instead of upgrading their tools, they should answer to this.
For some silly reason, I was a tad resistant to the new gradient tool. After watching this, I am 100% on board. And frankly, I feel a little silly for being curmudgeonly about it. Shame on me. Thanks, Aaron.
Congratulation Adobe, you almost made it. I can pick colors from the ,,Color'' panel, but can't pick from the swatches panel and neither of my Libary. Which is mean, I can't re-use my color history for gradients. Adobe still unable to make their features work fine. Why does it so hard to make these flow work just as in Figma? Why do I have to click so many times to do something simple?
Something they should mention is that the new gradients don't work well if you use the crop tool after establishing the gradients, either moving around or changing in apperance.
Hey there! check out our latest PRO tutorial phlearn.com/tutorial/photoshop-2023-the-ultimate-guide-to-the-latest-updates/ It provides a more detailed explanation of the gradient tool and all the other new tools in Photoshop. ☺
Click into the 'Adobe Photoshop' menu at the top left of your screen, then go to 'settings', then performance, and in the top right of the menu, make sure the box is clicked that reads, 'Use graphics processor'. If that doesn't work, re-start your computer. If it still isn't working, reset your VNRAM like this: Shut down your Mac. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, R. Release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart. For example, you might hear a startup sound more than once, or see the Apple logo more than once.
How do you use the gradient tool on a 360 photo along the stitch line or seams line, which are verticle line, so it can blend to both side? I need help. Thank you.
Is it just me, but in 2024, is everybody else having Lightroom and Photoshop crashes constantly. I built a brand new custom PC last year. Every software works without crashing except Lightroom and Photoshop. Show of hands, please 😅
so i used to use the gradient on my curves layer, where i do my dodge & burning. However, been having issues since the update. Any thoughts on that ? or will I just have to make it as a seperate layer from the dodge & burn curves?

@phlearn Hello, Aaron, Do you know "FIX" for Layer Mask in CC 2023. When I am using the Layer mask, the base layer's shadow still appears, a layer mask is not 100%
Trying to follow your tutorial but get stuck when I double-click on my gradient fill... instead of opening up the editor, it opens a popup labeled Gradient Fill.
Hey Eric! If you're double-clicking the gradient thumbnail in the Layers panel and it's opening a popup labeled "Gradient Fill," there's a chance you're not actually double-clicking on the gradient thumbnail. Instead, you're probably double-clicking on the gradient fill layer itself. To open the Gradient Editor, you need to double-click on the gradient thumbnail, which is the small, rectangular icon that appears next to the gradient fill layer in the Layers panel. Let us know how it goes and if you need any further help!
Hey Chris! To give you a more accurate answer we would need to see a screenshot of your PSD file, layers and tool box. However, here are a few reasons why you might not see the handles: 1. You have not selected the Gradient tool. To see the gradient handles, you need to have the Gradient tool selected. You can find the Gradient tool in the toolbar on the left side of the Photoshop window. 2. You are not editing a gradient layer. The gradient handles will only appear if you are editing a gradient layer. To create a gradient layer, click the New Fill or Adjustment Layer button at the bottom of the Layers panel and select Gradient. 3. The gradient handles are hidden. To unhide the gradient handles, click the Show Gradient Handles button in the Options bar. The Show Gradient Handles button looks like two small squares with a line connecting them. We hope this helps!
@PHLEARN how do you remove someone's mustache in photoshop? I have an old black and white family portrait of my great-Nana Ola's family and one of her family members looks awfully similar to Nikola Tesla, except the guy in the portrait isn't sporting a mustache. I wanted to edit an old photo of Nikola Tesla to see if my assumptions are correct by removing his mustache in Nikola Tesla's portrait and comparing it with the guy in the family portrait
Oh thank you@@phlearn . I figured this out. For some reason by default it was on screen mode.God know why. I hate when they change interface and copy evrything from MAC.
Hey there! If Photoshop keeps crashing it might have to do with space availability inside your computer/laptop. . Try freeing up some disk space by deleting old files or transferring them to an external hard drive. This should give Photoshop more room to run smoothly.
Why do they keep changing things only to make them worse? There is nothing I can't do in photoshop and now I'm sitting here wasting my companies time trying to learn how to use a tool that I have been using for 25 years. Why?
When I let go of the mouse button to place the distance of the gradient, the handles go away. It doesn't behave anything like this tutorial, thumbs down.
LOL, Macromedia Flash (yes before Adobe acquired them a decade and a half ago) had a better gradient editing tool almost 20 years ago. this is pathetic.
You're starting to talk too fast and going over the steps way too quickly. I'm sorry! It's a thumbs down for me. If you continue to rush through the tutorials, I will continue to cast my thumbs-down vote.

Not sure why it wasn't like this earlier, honestly. It's essentially what they had in Illustrator for years.

So when do we get to the gradient tool? I've got work to do here. Please prep your images before you start and stick to the topic
Your teaching style is so easy to follow, Thanks
Aaron, you talked so fast that you soundwd like a buzzing bee
I'm finding the way it reacts with a layer mask to be very hard to work with so the "classic" option solves that issue.
So they took heed from their other tool called Ilustrator finally. Do we have freeform in PS?
I wish you had explained the gradient control bar in more detail. In particular, how to add & control multiple points.

That middle gradient slider hasn’t been working for me in Beta. I slide it but it doesn’t do anything. Weird.
how come the handles for modifying the gradient disappear for mine but not yours?
Hey Chris! To give you a more accurate answer we would need to see a screenshot of your PSD file, layers and tool box. However, here are a few reasons why you might not see the handles:
@@phlearn yeah that's a good start. Thanks for the info! I am probably not doing the second two. Thanks!
