Very heartbreaking to see a puppy so sad and afraid. He needed the loving and care you gave him. Love to see Kelly alongside of you when you sit with dogs, and love the name Moose that she gave him! It’s amazing to see how sitting with dogs you help them, but in return they have helped you heal too. ❤️🐶
He looks like my Great Dane when he was a puppy. It breaks my heart to see him in a shelter because I know how scary it is for Danes to be in unfamiliar surroundings. 😢
When you picked him up and put him on your lap, he was uneasy but when you started rubbing his ears and head, he looked so grateful as if he never expected to be touched lovingly again.
Sad to hear about the poor cat who died. I’m a cat lover but also love dogs. It’s sad this happened for this pup. I hope the shelter makes sure to interview any new pet parents for Moose that they don’t have cats. He needs a good home as do the many abandoned cats too.
They definitely will absolutely let any future potential rescuers of this dog no that he's killed a cat they have to I mean that's liability if they were to not disclose that information and send this dog home with somebody who has a cat knowing that they have that information.
I have a dog that was three months old when we got him. He's dangerous to my cats sort of, but mostly just the boy cat. I had to make a choice. He was so shut down when we got him. He did not do well in the shelter. If we returned him we were concerned what would happen if we returned him. For 15 years we have kept my cats and him separate. Everyone here is loved and safe. It's been a lot of work, but it's been worth it.

Poor angel, he’s definitely sorry he hurt the cat, his whole gentle demeanour screams he didn’t mean it! I feel like he’s a good dog and got caught up in a moment, as puppies often too. I don’t blame the family for returning him though. From their point of view, a loved pet was mauled to death… they have children to consider and protect. They can’t guarantee that he wont accidentally bite/take it too far with the kids too as he’s already showed them he’s capable. They obviously don’t want to take the risk and I completely understand that. Not to mention, im sure the incident/accident was traumatising for them and theres a lot of guilt there. Hard to move past. I hope he finds the best home with all the love, safety & undivided attention of his new owner/s. He’s absolutely gorgeous, his face melts me.
do you have the same view on elective abortion? just wondering because most people arent consistent in their views (not accusing u of that, literally, just asking)...
Sadly I am clear across the country and not quite ready for a new dog. There is a part of me that wants to adopt him. I am a dog trainer, so he would learn how to be a great citizen in this world. I am sure someone there will get him before I would be able to come out and pick him up in a few months. I will keep my eye on the listing though when I get ready to adopt a new dog.
Can a dog who killed a cat also do the same to a child? The family who took him in were traumatized. Is the dog neutered? Would neutering guarantee or be more likely than not he would not harm anymore animals or little children? Could you also put a dog on medication that would help with aggression?
@justice2255 Well, if he's a Giant Breed, which he surely appears to be, neutering is always helpful. But he's too young yet. Giant breed pups should be neutered @ 12 to 18 months due to the amount of growing they're doing. I have Great Danes, they grow until they're 2yrs & fill out until they're 3yrs. ❤
There is no evidence that he is an aggressive dog. Most likely he was trying to play with the cat and didn’t know his own strength. Or they could’ve gotten into a fight, and again, he’s just so big that he accidentally killed it. Or he could just not like cats. His owners failed him, and he never got the proper chance he deserves. It’s tragic what happened, but dogs don’t have malice or hatred. He might not be good with kids simply because of his size and because he’s a puppy. Older kids or kids that understand his boundaries would probably fine. Honestly, it’s like you didn’t even watch the video. Moose is NOT an aggressive dog.

If you think your God has that power, why did he not have the power to not traumatise the dog in the first place? Did he need to make you feel bad about the dog first? Your God is either powerless or sadistic.
@sylviawylie9218 If you would take the time to read and understand the Bible, then you may find the answer, but let me school you for now. It is the devil that did this trauma to the dog not God. I’m a cat person. Dogs scare me (70 year old, 2 years post stroke). Watching your show, ..while limping along on a walk, a neighbor’s dog came out running/barking, owner running behind. I thought of Rocky, remained calm, only slowly bringing my arms to my chest. All was well. Before I would have gone into panic mode. Thank you .. also, thank you for stroke story.
❤❤ hi I'm 73 in a few months I'm sorry you feel so weary of dogs I rescue them not for money or not for anything but love I cant help guess God put it my heart I see a need I'm there. However I see so many cats them around because we leave cat food out across the field.. If you ever feel the need for something on your walk mabey help one or two lost souls. They appreciate it some of them have none but hope you will see them. God bless our animals and you for your love of cats someone needs to remember. 😊😊😊
I used to have a neighbor who was scared to death of dogs, one day she knocked on my door and asked if she could try to pet my dog and I helped her very slowly get comfortable with her. It took her a month or two just coming by for a few minutes a day but she managed to conquer her fear and it really made my dog so happy to help her. Dogs can be scary but they are good creatures who are more then likely more scared of you then you of them.
Dogs scare me too. When I was a young child, my mother related a story about when she was bitten by a dog as a child, so I have always been wary and scared (especially large dogs). I do love watching Sitting With Dogs, though.
I see the trembling this dog is exhibiting. We rescue dogs each time we find one that needs rescuing. We have no outside funding. It all comes out of our own pockets. Thank God for you Rocky!
Of course, it’s also so sad that the cat lost its life. Moose and the kitty deserved better from their parents. My neighbor adopted a huge puppy and neglected him every day. No walks. Left alone outside. We called the humane society and tried hard to love Choco from next door, with hugs, pets and treats over the fence. We complained and wrote letters. Many neighbors did. He was just a giant puppy. He howled all night. Then one day he just wasn’t there anymore. I wish more people understood that it’s a huge responsibility. It hurts my heart. I tell myself that Choco is with a loving family now and has room to run. Thanks so much to people like Rocky and Kelly.
I used to know someone when I was a kid that got two Akita’s and built them a kennel and they basically never came out of that kennel and they wondered why the dogs weren’t friendly or anything.. They were left in the kennel and only got food and watered and I’m guessing kennel cleaning
I can’t believe the change in Moose’s eyes and face after such a short time with you! You have e real gift. I wish I could take Moose but cat. I just know the right person is going to come along and give him a family. You have given the first good time since his abandonment. He’s on his way.
always the fault of an A hole human that knows nothing about owning a dog...stupid people need to educate themselves before owning pets..how did humans get so stupid? some humans dont deserve the love of a pet...these animals are smarter then these humans....how pathetic is that ..
It's heartbreaking someone's hurt him 😢 probably for doing what a puppy does and that's play rough he didn't know it was a loved pet it was like once of his toys.
Somatic experiencing (SE) is a trauma release modality in which this shaking is recognized as a healthy way to release trauma so that it isn't stored into the body. (With due respect, Rocky is incorrect). This is the start of Mosse's physical body actually serving him in working through it himself in a way that his innate wisdom is guiding him to do. It has been observed with animals in the wild and that was the origin of SE therapy for humans.
He's a heart breaker alright. That face just melts my heart. There's someone out there who is going to be the perfect parent for him. Wish it could be me but I'm getting to old to handle such a big boy.
You are the kindest and sweetest man Rocky, shame on anyone who says negative stuff about you without spending time with you while you are loving and caring about all the sweet dogs you sit with, that makes me angry that they talk to you that way. You’re the BEST.
As a qualified dog trainer 30yrs, this is exactly how we help to rehabilitate a traumatised or fear aggression dog.. it's takes patience kindness, time. This helps the dog to move to the next phase of building trust, and get them a new family.. great work Rocky
I rescued a dog with fear aggression and 8 years later it is something we still work on every day. Some trauma just doesn't leave. He is better than he was, but I do have to keep him away from kids, large dogs and some strangers. No matter what we have gone through, I wouldn't trade him for the world. I just wish we could eliminate that last stubborn bit of fear.
I never really thought about it but I have cptsd and part of therapy has been understanding Dr Daniel Brown's work in attachments, which I would assume could be modified for animals.
@especiallyxemily. that shivering is your body trying to return to equilibrium... It's your body trying to heal itself... It's okay... It's normal.... It's not something to be afraid of.... Lean into it and let it help you
I’m not going to judge his owners for giving him up after what happened. It’d have been irresponsible to keep him if they still have other cats. Even if they didn’t, they’re probably pretty upset with him and he needs owners that don’t resent him.
You and your wife have turned a sad dog into a puppy. He is so happy with the two of your. You are putting out love and warmth and he is getting it. So wonderful.
Moose is so sweet with the right owners and a house free of small critters, I can see that he'd be an awesome dog. I hope he finds the right family soon!
That's a VERY small area for that poor baby! 😪 I didn't realize how small until I saw an overhead shot as you were going in with him. Poor little guy! He seems like a very scared puppy. Thank you for helping Moose!
Moose is definitely Cane Corso. The face, ears and “Italian racing stripe” are the keys. CC’s are also very sensitive and are very easily emotionally hurt. We have one who was traumatized by being dumped in a rural forest area and bounced among 4 foster homes who didn’t understand him. It took 6 months to get him out from under the kitchen table. They are also natural hunters so the incident with the cat could be accidental. Active children can be frightening resulting in a reactive response that could appear dangerous. He needs a quiet home with a dog friend and experienced dog people.
You are so right and amazing for bringing the truth out about the cane Corso, the are very beautiful dogs with sensitive humble compassion. Cat owners need to have the same rules as dog owners.
I have a lovely dog - who hunts small prey, like birds and mice and hares. She lived with cats but NO WAY will I ever leave her alone with one. The prey drive is just too strong
He takes treats very gently. That's a good thing. Hopefully he finds the perfect forever home with people who are familiar with his breed and are experienced giant breed owners.
I would take that dog in a heartbeat- sadly I live in another country and have three rescues already . Please please here a plea from across the globe- may a loving family find him
Rocky, you mentioned "stewardship" - that is a biblical instruction, God said that we should be good stewards of this world. Thank you for that. You certainly are a good steward. GOD BLESS
Sorry to hear about your stroke. Hopefully it was a one time thing. Love seeing you work your magic with this pup. Really amazing work you are doing with these dogs.
He's soo cute, it hurts my heart to see him so hurt. He has the saddest eyes and contemplating everything. Thank you for helping this pup. He just needs love time and patience. You're giving him a chance to have a good life again that is priceless
It's so sad that certain people want to have big, tough dogs but don't know what they're getting into. These giants breeds are a lot to handle, even as exuberant puppies. They take so much kindness and patience for them to grow into confident and calm adults. Makes me so sad that humans are so stupid and clueless and wounded themselves that they would treat a pup so cruely. Thank goodness for you Rocky!
I think also it depends on the breed because some dog’s instinctively have a high prey drive hence why I will never have a husky, terriers, hunting dogs, etc.
@@latinaalma1947 It is, but it's also nurtured by people who, knowingly or not, train for aggression. It's not always scary mean people causing this- teaching them to rough house too hard with toys can too.
@@Kaotiqua You're correct. When I got my name GSD, we never played tug games, where he could show his strength off. When we got a female, they would tug on a toy, and he was much stronger, but he would get bored before she would let go, and he never thought he was her boss.
💯! When my dog came home to me when he was a tiny puppy, I remember having him in my arms, and knowing that this tiny little being was 💯 reliant on me for everything. That thought melted me in every way 🥰. I’ll always remember that moment of that realization. Everyone needs to understand this huge responsibility. My boy is almost 12 now, he’s got mobility issues; I have to carry him up and down the stairs now, as he’s developed osteoarthritis. I think he absolutely knows I’m still there for him, and he completely trusts me to make sure he’s always OK. The love I have for him has increased and it does every day, even when things get tough. You’ll never have that loyalty back from anything or anyone ever. ❤

Is this a mastiff? My friend 4 foot 8, adopted a mastiff pup. He was a service dog, helped her get up, mobilized. Watching them walk down the street it was hysterical. Fully grown she was supposed to "protect" pat. Unfortunately, when a man attacked her for her purse, the pup retreated, and got badly kicked by the assailant. Pat was anguished, so gave up her late night walks. I LOVE THE BARK!
Mr.Kanaka, I woke up to your wonderful site this morning. Moose's middle name should be "Lovey❤". I agree that getting outside of our own world and looking into the lives of others truly is healing. Thank you for all that you do and it will come back to you 100,000 fold in blessings. Moose is truly a good boy. He was born that way. ❤
Sounds like the family that adopted him weren’t really ready to get him the training and discipline that he needs- I think their hearts were in the right place, but didn’t realize all the work it would take - I just pray he gets a family and someone who will be able to get him to be the best dog he can be- Love you Moose💕
I agree with you. They probably lacked the knowledge to understand what they were getting into. Some kind of discussion ahead of time on how they would handle him given the fact that they had a cat or cats might have been helpful, but this dog really requires an extremely aware family. He has so much love to give but is now terrified.
I was wondering if the screening could have been more rigorous. Pairing a mastiff puppy with a family that has cats and small children might have been scrutinized more closely?
@@science4-21 I agree. Yes the family should have studied about the breed before adopting him but they are amateurs. The shelter staff are professionals who could do screening more rigorously and warn the potential adoptive family about the breed’s behavior. I hope the shelter train him or require the adoptive family to attend the behavior classes with the dog. The local shelter in my town does that, especially after the incident like this case. Saying oh it’s not Moose’s fault is easy, but what he really needs is the training of him AND the owners so that he’ll have a permanent home in the future.
I would love to give Moose a home. I miss my dog. We shared 13 years together. Moose reminds me of how timid my dog was when I got him. It was very hard to lose him but it's time to smother this beautiful dog with love. I am struggling with my own new disabilities (strokes are scary & and shock you when you are fairly young). However, I am still sleeping on the 4 inches of mattress my dog's size allowed me to have! What a gentle giant.
Oh... this dog is exactly like my own Moose was. He had a similarly rough start to life, but spent his last 10 years with me and was the best companion I've ever had. When you gave him that name, my heart...

He will probably do just fine with other larger dogs. And he can still be taught to be gentle with smaller creatures, just takes time, wisdom and responsibility.
It takes a special person to rehab a "no other pets" dog. My former roommate rescued a double-surrender Husky because, according to the shelter, she didn't get along with other pets. My roommate worked intensely with that dog and in under a year she got along great with other dogs including mine. It also helped that my dog was already socialized with other dogs of any size and cats. They weren't cuddle buddies, but they got along like peas and carrots.
Shedding light and bringing us into the shelters to see these dogs you feature is priceless. You help show their potential. You show that they aren't irredeemable. You give them a lifeline. The trolls and haters just don't understand that. Thank you for all you do for all those beautiful dogs.
I am new to your channel, I am so relieved to see that there is someone in America that will go in and set with these poor pups. I would love to be able to do something like this, but we don’t have that here. So THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I don't give my dogs furry toys to shake or play with. It may seem poor parenting, but how are they to know the differences in triggered play response before it's too late? When I had a kitten join our family, it was crated for a while to assure its safety, especially to protect its food and water until training was completed. I introduced everyone carefully, plus made sure it had escapes and indoor tree area to climb. All went well, but I made sure everyone was ready. Don't set anyone up for failure, is how I try to live life by.
I don’t buy bird toys for my dogs for the same reason (or dog Squishmallows). 😂 They don’t know the difference and you can’t really get upset if you set them up for failure.
The first thing I thought when I saw that stuffed owl toy is how is he supposed to know the difference between it and a cat. There are a lot of mixed signals going on in this video.
@@sacrebleu1371 I haven't had a cat since I was very young I recently got one and have a dog I did the same thing for about a month until the two were very familiar by the end of it the dog would beg for the cat to be let out

Oh my gosh. This dog really touched my heart. I wish I could adopt him but I'm not in the place to do that right now. But, someone will be very lucky to have Moose as a family member. Gorgeous sweet puppy ! ❤
As a human, and strictly as a human keeping in mind that dogs live in the moment so this need not apply to them, I personally would rather be left alone than experience the comfort that could come with a relationship knowing you knew you weren't staying. I've had my own trauma though. I prefer to be by myself. I despise the risk of letting anybody close enough to do me any real harm. I suppose I could "retrain" my brain but I'm interested. The world is what it is and I'd rather know and be careful that be clueless and run over. Again. But again, I'm not a dog. I think past right now.
Great video and a great pup. Patience is an incredible tool many of us struggle using. My wife and I have done 3 successful fosters, 2 of them for almost a year. With the health and behavior of the pups it was patience that was most important. Thanks for helping Moose.😊
I can't believe anyone would criticize your work! I am a trauma survivor myself and what you do for these dogs is the best thing anyone could do for them. You show them they don't have to be afraid. You make them adoptable. Even if they are scared when you leave, they are not nearly as scared as they were before you worked with them. You lessen the toll on their bodies and help them find peace.❤
Makes me wonder how much time the criticizers spend actually donating their time (or open their pocketbooks) to help these poor souls vs. casting dispersions on those that do. Rocky Kanaka, his wife, Alexa and the staff of Friends of the Valley deserve metals, not criticism.

Moose is a great name for him. His size and color. Someone out there needs a Moose in their life. 🤗
I need a moose in my life.
@@LadyEnyalusME TOO!! HE'S ABSOLUTELY PRECIOUS WITH HIS BIG EARS AND BEAUTIFUL COLOR!! HE DESERVES A HOME THAT WILL GIVE HIM UNCONDITIONAL LOVE!! ❤😊

The cat ate his food that's a no no in his world
I’m a cat person.
One moose; many moose.
Hugs to you! ❤ Keep walking and loving! I glad your neighbor was around in that situation.
Yeah traumatic for the puppy but poor kitty the whole situation is heartbreaking.
I used to know someone when I was a kid that got two Akita’s and built them a kennel and they basically never came out of that kennel and they wondered why the dogs weren’t friendly or anything.. They were left in the kennel and only got food and watered and I’m guessing kennel cleaning

I rescued a dog with fear aggression and 8 years later it is something we still work on every day. Some trauma just doesn't leave. Moose takes those treats so gently!! What a good boy.
How can people be so cruel? It all makes sense! I hope a year from now he's in a happy home and just being a dog ❤
🥺♥️
You are so right and amazing for bringing the truth out about the cane Corso, the are very beautiful dogs with sensitive humble compassion. Cat owners need to have the same rules as dog owners.

That and squeaky toys
I don’t buy bird toys for my dogs for the same reason (or dog Squishmallows). 😂 They don’t know the difference and you can’t really get upset if you set them up for failure.

Bless him; I hope he finds the right home. He’s such a handsome boy!
I feel so much joy watching YOUR joy when there are small victories for pups like Moose. Your face lights up and you feel giddy but remain subdued. Thank you.
Moose is a great name!
He’s such a beautiful boy. Beyond beautiful.
This poor puppy. Whatever happened to him it was incredibly traumatic. Thank you for sticking with him. And showing him love.
Just brilliant to see him take a treat from your hand!
Poor baby. People
Forget dogs are animals first. They have innate instincts and have to be taught to overcome them.
Thank you for the work you do!
