Absolutely, i hear Meshugga allways in the gym. It relaxes me and also pushs me if i want to run fast, i smash "Demiurge". Allways makes me chuckle from time to time people ask me what im hearing, because i allways wiggle with my head on the running mashine and look like one of the gummi bears, i look so happy.
You should check out Gojira. The drummer is amazing. Greath rhythms. A harsh vocalist who has more pitch centered growls and some great atmosphere/melodies on top.
Just remember, its all in 4/4. Just listen for the snare. But great to see Meshuggah here. I would also definitely recommend Dancers to a Discordant System and check out their live 2023 Bloodstock show. It provides so much more experience than simply the audio alone. Hopefully they tour in Aus soon, as its been 7 years...

Other songs that I would recommend are “Dancers to a Discordant System,” “Rational Gaze,” “Straws Pulled at Random,” and “I” (it’s 21 minutes long).
Haha "I became obsessed with this track" is how it starts. Back in '08 I was into heavy stuff, but needed clean vox and melody as an anchor. "Bleed" was my gateway drug and what hooked me on Messhuggah. Keep listening, and you'll find that Meshuggah isn't just heavy for the sake of it, but about cultivating an atmosphere that is paradoxically peaceful and hypnotic. When you dive deeper and read the lyrics you'll find they're bursting with passion and the music is almost spiritual and tribal. TL;DR: I now put on Meshuggah to help me sleep because it lulls me into such a special place. I have been listening to Bleed for 16 years and it hasn't gotten stale, and no other track takes that cake. They also put on the best live show I've ever seen in my life. They're old dudes now and, at least for now, still capable of playing this material live, with the most intense and massive light show I've ever seen in heavy music. Saw them late last year for the first time, worth the wait. After long hiatus, they played "Bleed" for the first time in ages, and it was a religious experience.

True Facts and Story and origin about Djent: In a 2018 interview by Rauta, Meshuggah guitarist Mårten Hagström explains: "our lead guitar player, Fredrik Thordendal, being drunk back in the day, talking to one of our old-school fans, trying to explain what type of guitar tone we were always trying to get, and he was desperately trying to say, 'We want that 'dj_,' 'dj_,' 'dj_,' 'dj_.' And that guy was, like, 'What's he saying? Is that a Swedish word? Must be. Sounds like dj_, maybe 'djent'? Maybe something like that.' And that's where it comes from. A drunk misunderstanding, as always with MESHUGGAH." Fredrik Thordendal is considered the originator of the djent technique, However, the band did not coin the term itself, It is generally accepted that the word 'djent' was coined by Misha Mansoor of Periphery as an onomatopoeic reference to the Fredrik Thordendal distinctive palm-muted staccato riffing style from the "drunk misunderstanding" event. Meshuggah "invented djent" INDIRECTLY and they not consider themselves as a Djent band or invented the style.

So the Opeth harsh vocal gateway drug struck again, huh? That's the story for me, too, and I lot of others from what I've read in comments over the years. It really does open you up to so much more great metal music! There have been studies about how there may be mental health benefits to listening to metal music. They can't find any links to the aggressive, anti-social behaviour that the old censors of the 80s were so afraid of, but quite a bit of evidence to the contrary. It's my experience. Music generally is good for us, but I think metal is particularly cathartic, giving us a safe way to both explore the darker parts of our natures and to release those pent up emotions. A bit like Jung's "Shadow Work", perhaps?
Destroy Erase Improve (DEI) is a great starting point for the earlier "pre success" stage of Meshuggah's evolution - they've got older albums - just as good, but this one is a gem you don't hear about much these days.
Everyone in Meshuggah is playing drums, but on different instruments. The rhythm is the main thing in the vocals, guitars and bass too. But no one is playing more drums than the drummer, he's the drummiest!
Jent and me-shu-guh. Bleed is an astonishing song. It took Tomas Haake more than 6 months to learn, has more changes than are apparent and requires superhuman dexterity. He is playing hertas with his feet, triplets with his left hand and ghost notes with his right. And it is all in 4/4, while what is going on around him is ever changing- polymeters, not polyrhthyms!
@@vorpalblades I think too many people consider Meshuggah to be a band that only works in polyrhythms. But bleed is actually just in 4/4, so what is happening is that while the other musicians are rotating their rhythms, every now and again they all come together. That builds the tension and release in the song. It’s such an amazing composition.
This may be my favourite reaction to three of my all time favourite songs I've ever seen. I first heard meshuggah just after Destroy, Erase, Improve was released and Future Breed Machine was my first track. I can honestly say that at that time it was utterly unique. No one sounded quite like meshuggah, something that's carried on to this day. So glad you vibe with them, and especially those really heavy bits. Hope they stay with you as long as they have me! 🤘

Meshuggah is extreme music that you can space out to, I love it. I'd absolutely recommend 'Born in Dissonance' and 'The Broken Cog', they're walls of sound I'll never grow bored of.
Omg, you just happen to explore my two favorite bands for the past 20 years :D When you covered Blackwater Park I thought about recommending Meshuggah, but I dont think I did lol ...glad someone else did ❤ New Millenium is also my favourite track along with the Chaossphere album. Because it's more lyric-based. But thats just personal taste. Meshuggah has done alot. Their latest album is also superb with some ridiculously good riffs. When you get lost in the rytm, a tip is to listen for the hi-hat - it's there most of the time in the background somewhere, nailing it down for you. ❤

This is just so pure and wonderful ❤️ Meshuggah are one of the most crushing bands out there but refreshingly original too, and there is definitely melody to be found in their discography (the second half of Straws Pulled at Random is gorgeous; definitely check that out at some point)! I just wanted to say thank you; I found this really engaging and genuine compared to other reaction channels. Opeth are my favourite band by the way and I love that Blackwater Park connected with you! Their albums Still Life and Ghost Reveries are also masterpieces 🙂
"The Mouth Licking What You've Bled" is an excellent "introductory" cut. Chaosphere and Catch Thirty-Three are (quite confidently) this band's high water marks! Destroy. Erase. Improve. is an unmitigated classic [I, STILL, get stopped on the street when I wear my tour shirt from that tour!! - Not OFTEN, but: with great joy and respect whenever it occurs!! 🤘🤘] ...This band, definitely, have "s new breed" and "an old breed" of fans ...and (as, sadly, often seems to be an OVERALL attitude with younger listeners, period (🤷) ...It has been my experience that: newer, more contemporary fans, ignorantly & short-sightedly, often tend to "ignore" (or diminish) a fair amount of the earlier (and most vibrantly influential & effective!) of their music. Yes. ...Maybe that's "just me" (which would, STILL, be disappointing, but: less sad and disconcerting, overall. 🤷🤷). The lead Guitarist of Meshuggah released a Solo/Side Project-Album called: "Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects: Sol Niger Within" which basically took the Meshuggah-Atmosphere, but from a Jazz-Fusion-angle. The Drummer on that Album is the incredible Morgan Ågren. It's one 45-minute-track split in 29 sections. Very otherworldly. Love seeing you get into Meshuggah, Kira. Obzen was the album that cemented me as a fan. If you want to understand more about some of the concepts going on behind the music, Ben Eller has an excellent video called "Stuff Meshuggah Does". Its goofy but explains the ideas (and beat counts) behind some of the songs better than anyone else I've ever come across.
New Millennium Cyanide Christ is one of my favorite songs ever. You should check out the music video for that one on your own time, it's freaking awesome.

Well earned sub from me, that was so amazing to watch! Welcome to the chaos! Some other band recommendations I’d love to make that take influence from Messhugah… Periphery and Tesseract, they have that chaos to calming and end with a bang all over their discography. Periphery II is a solid album to start from and War of Being from Tesseract. These bands are ahead of their time for sure and I think you will love them!
A huge part of the Meshuggah sound is tied to downtuned and alternate tuned guitars (especially since 2002). To help get to these extra-heavy frequencies, the band has pioneered the use of extended range guitars - starting off with 7-string instruments before moving on to 8-strings (and even 9-strings more recently!).
That's SO interesting that you said Bleed helps calm you. Meshuggah and Neurosis' epic "Through Silver in Blood" record calm me, even at their most intense moments. Even more interesting is that Through Silver in Blood is just as heavy as Meshuggah, but in about the most opposite way that you could imagine. Slow, brooding, drum circles, endless spins around the most violent whirlpool in the entire ocean, yet centering and calming. The sad thing about that record is that it will never be played live again 😞 Tied for the most intense thing I've witnessed musically.
I think that bottom line, music like this and tool makes your brain work in different areas, and helps give a release you didn't have before. And i love hearing the squeal over the riffs😅 its awesome
A Meshuggah song that has a pretty obvious groove to it would be "Rational Gaze" off their "Nothing" record. It's one of my favs up there with Bleed and New Milennium Cyanide Christ. Give it a listen some time...love to hear of another person who is relaxed by the heavier side of music, keep exploring!
Future Breed Machine is on another level. I swear I had heard that song a million times before the rhythm finally clicked, but once it did, the song was completely easy to follow. Overthinking it as being some crazy time signature, when it's just double time. The snare hits are on the upbeat
In case you haven't yet, try listening to Periphery. They're mixing Djent with amazing melodies and even clean vocals. "Reptile" is a master piece. Worth every of it's 17 minutes. Shorter options: "The Scourge", "Wildfire" or "Zagreus".
I still remeber watching your first reaction to rock music. You were so young, so new to distortion... 😂 I also knew right away you'll end up with Meshuggah eventually.
I'd recommend checking out their song "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave it Motion" the guitar work and the rhythm are amazing, its seriously one of those truly hypnotic tracks they do.
Extreme music always makes me want to get up and move and it's really nice to see you having the same reaction 😊 if you wanted a bit more djent, Sikth are masters of the genre. Behind The Door might be a good song to start, but they have some absolutely crazy songs if you dive down the rabbit hole.
nailed it... that's exactly what draws me (and I assume other people) to meshuggah ... the hook, and what seems like un manageable complexity, which resolves into a pretty simple 4-4 groove, with lots of cool bits-to-remember instead over time. I think Mesuggah taps into that satisfaction that people naturally feel when something resolves nicely, but instead of resolving nicely it just has a cool like symbol accent that lets you then pick out / memorize the pattern of the time offset in the guitar part.....resolving groovily instead of nicely maybe?
Knew you'd get around to this eventually! First time I heard Bleed back in 2009 it blew the top of my head clean off - I could not believe my ears. At the time I'd been taking a break from extreme metal for a while [except for doom, which is in my blood], but hearing this very track reignited so much for me - old and new.
I loved seeing how much you enjoyed this. New Millennium Cyanide Christ was also my favorite Meshuggah track for over 20 years, until it was finally dethroned by, "They Move Below."

Amazing reactions, really fun to see someone geek out to meshuggah! Polyrhythmics require active listening. There's multiple choices on "where you find yourself on the beat". Meshuggah is king on this stuff, and tool does quite well with it too. If in doubt, with meshuggah you can usually find a snare to headbang too. :)
You described the perfect way to enjoy meshuggah, listening to it repeatedly, and getting to know the rythm. And once you get it locked in it energizes you like nothing else!
Hell yeah. Meshuggah is probably the most influential metal band of the last 30 years. My personal favorites are Rational Gaze and Combustion. Both are different to the ones you have reacted too. Rational Gaze is more groovy, and combustion is more upbeat and has much more melody.
@daviddorantes4292 slipknot did not exist. Pantera maybe, At the gates was influential for years, but melodeath isn't really as big as it used to be. I'd argue that more bands sound like they are trying to be meshuggah, with a touch of Pantera.
Meshuggah is awesome, really heavy and cerebral stuff every single time, super groovy riffs, and Thomas Haake is an absolute beast of a drummer it's really easy to get lost in their grooves, especially because often each instrument does its own thing rhythmically you might've seen some by now, but there's really good videos explaining the insane rhythm fuckery in some of their tracks once you learn how it ticks, you only gain more appreciation for the band and the music :) nice reactions!
Great reaction, this is a good showing of Meshuggah's older style. I was hoping Demiurge made the cut but maybe in the future! Some other cool bands that would be great for this channel could be Converge (anything off All we Love or Axe to Fall) or Igorrr (Savage Sinusoid or Spirituality and Distortion) would be incredible, both of these bands are garanteed to get you hyped up. At 46 years old, my musical taste gets more and more heavy while many of my friends are going the other direction. 15 years ago, the heaviest band I listened to consistently was Fear Factory and would never have considered listening to harsher vocals. Now, over the past year, I have gotten into bands like Cattle Decapitation, Fit for an Autopsy, and Lorna Shore. You should definitely check out A Photic Doom or Scourge of the Offspring by Cattle Decapitation. Also, check out a more prog metal band called Between the Buried and Me. Extremophile Elite and Ants of the Sky are some good tracks.
Remember when Meshuggah released their album as this style of this music back in the 90's. It was a revolution in the metal world. Before all this chaos Meshuggah was more of a thrash band.
awesome, these guys are amazing live too. At least, in the couple of times I saw them, each time they played a note you could kind of feel it resonating throughout your whole body. massive, but fantastic sound. and everyone was just having a blast trying to headbang in time

Fredrik Thordendal is considered the originator of the djent technique, However, the band did not coin the term itself, It is generally accepted that the word 'djent' was coined by Misha Mansoor of Periphery as an onomatopoeic reference to the Fredrik Thordendal distinctive palm-muted staccato riffing style from the "drunk misunderstanding" event.
Meshuggah "invented djent" INDIRECTLY and they not consider themselves as a Djent band or invented the style.

There have been studies about how there may be mental health benefits to listening to metal music. They can't find any links to the aggressive, anti-social behaviour that the old censors of the 80s were so afraid of, but quite a bit of evidence to the contrary. It's my experience. Music generally is good for us, but I think metal is particularly cathartic, giving us a safe way to both explore the darker parts of our natures and to release those pent up emotions. A bit like Jung's "Shadow Work", perhaps?

Destroy Erase Improve (DEI) is a great starting point for the earlier "pre success" stage of Meshuggah's evolution - they've got older albums - just as good, but this one is a gem you don't hear about much these days.

Everyone in Meshuggah is playing drums, but on different instruments. The rhythm is the main thing in the vocals, guitars and bass too. But no one is playing more drums than the drummer, he's the drummiest!
Jent and me-shu-guh. Bleed is an astonishing song. It took Tomas Haake more than 6 months to learn, has more changes than are apparent and requires superhuman dexterity. He is playing hertas with his feet, triplets with his left hand and ghost notes with his right. And it is all in 4/4, while what is going on around him is ever changing- polymeters, not polyrhthyms!

@@vorpalblades I think too many people consider Meshuggah to be a band that only works in polyrhythms. But bleed is actually just in 4/4, so what is happening is that while the other musicians are rotating their rhythms, every now and again they all come together. That builds the tension and release in the song. It’s such an amazing composition.
This may be my favourite reaction to three of my all time favourite songs I've ever seen.
I first heard meshuggah just after Destroy, Erase, Improve was released and Future Breed Machine was my first track. I can honestly say that at that time it was utterly unique. No one sounded quite like meshuggah, something that's carried on to this day. So glad you vibe with them, and especially those really heavy bits. Hope they stay with you as long as they have me! 🤘

Meshuggah is extreme music that you can space out to, I love it. I'd absolutely recommend 'Born in Dissonance' and 'The Broken Cog', they're walls of sound I'll never grow bored of.

New Millenium is also my favourite track along with the Chaossphere album. Because it's more lyric-based. But thats just personal taste. Meshuggah has done alot. Their latest album is also superb with some ridiculously good riffs.
When you get lost in the rytm, a tip is to listen for the hi-hat - it's there most of the time in the background somewhere, nailing it down for you. ❤

This is just so pure and wonderful ❤️ Meshuggah are one of the most crushing bands out there but refreshingly original too, and there is definitely melody to be found in their discography (the second half of Straws Pulled at Random is gorgeous; definitely check that out at some point)!

...and (as, sadly, often seems to be an OVERALL attitude with younger listeners, period (🤷) ...It has been my experience that: newer, more contemporary fans, ignorantly & short-sightedly, often tend to "ignore" (or diminish) a fair amount of the earlier (and most vibrantly influential & effective!) of their music.

The lead Guitarist of Meshuggah released a Solo/Side Project-Album called: "Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects: Sol Niger Within" which basically took the Meshuggah-Atmosphere, but from a Jazz-Fusion-angle. The Drummer on that Album is the incredible Morgan Ågren. It's one 45-minute-track split in 29 sections. Very otherworldly.

Love seeing you get into Meshuggah, Kira. Obzen was the album that cemented me as a fan.
If you want to understand more about some of the concepts going on behind the music, Ben Eller has an excellent video called "Stuff Meshuggah Does". Its goofy but explains the ideas (and beat counts) behind some of the songs better than anyone else I've ever come across.
New Millennium Cyanide Christ is one of my favorite songs ever. You should check out the music video for that one on your own time, it's freaking awesome.

The first time I ever saw Meshuggah live they opened with Future Breed Machine and it was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had.

Well earned sub from me, that was so amazing to watch! Welcome to the chaos! Some other band recommendations I’d love to make that take influence from Messhugah… Periphery and Tesseract, they have that chaos to calming and end with a bang all over their discography. Periphery II is a solid album to start from and War of Being from Tesseract. These bands are ahead of their time for sure and I think you will love them!
A huge part of the Meshuggah sound is tied to downtuned and alternate tuned guitars (especially since 2002). To help get to these extra-heavy frequencies, the band has pioneered the use of extended range guitars - starting off with 7-string instruments before moving on to 8-strings (and even 9-strings more recently!).
I would love to see reaction to Gojira ( the french Band, not the King of the monsters, although...) and Wolves in a throne room.

That's SO interesting that you said Bleed helps calm you. Meshuggah and Neurosis' epic "Through Silver in Blood" record calm me, even at their most intense moments. Even more interesting is that Through Silver in Blood is just as heavy as Meshuggah, but in about the most opposite way that you could imagine. Slow, brooding, drum circles, endless spins around the most violent whirlpool in the entire ocean, yet centering and calming. The sad thing about that record is that it will never be played live again 😞 Tied for the most intense thing I've witnessed musically.
I think that bottom line, music like this and tool makes your brain work in different areas, and helps give a release you didn't have before. And i love hearing the squeal over the riffs😅 its awesome
A Meshuggah song that has a pretty obvious groove to it would be "Rational Gaze" off their "Nothing" record. It's one of my favs up there with Bleed and New Milennium Cyanide Christ. Give it a listen some time...love to hear of another person who is relaxed by the heavier side of music, keep exploring!

Future Breed Machine is on another level. I swear I had heard that song a million times before the rhythm finally clicked, but once it did, the song was completely easy to follow. Overthinking it as being some crazy time signature, when it's just double time. The snare hits are on the upbeat

In case you haven't yet, try listening to Periphery. They're mixing Djent with amazing melodies and even clean vocals. "Reptile" is a master piece. Worth every of it's 17 minutes. Shorter options: "The Scourge", "Wildfire" or "Zagreus".
”Rational gaze” and ”light the shortening fuse”… and Meshuggah means CRAZY in jiddisch 😉
The rhythmical play on "Bleed" is just hypnotizing. I'm not that big fan of Meshuggah though but th is song, OMG, I mean, OMFG!
I still remeber watching your first reaction to rock music. You were so young, so new to distortion... 😂 I also knew right away you'll end up with Meshuggah eventually.
I'd recommend checking out their song "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave it Motion" the guitar work and the rhythm are amazing, its seriously one of those truly hypnotic tracks they do.
Extreme music always makes me want to get up and move and it's really nice to see you having the same reaction 😊 if you wanted a bit more djent, Sikth are masters of the genre. Behind The Door might be a good song to start, but they have some absolutely crazy songs if you dive down the rabbit hole.
nailed it... that's exactly what draws me (and I assume other people) to meshuggah ... the hook, and what seems like un manageable complexity, which resolves into a pretty simple 4-4 groove, with lots of cool bits-to-remember instead over time. I think Mesuggah taps into that satisfaction that people naturally feel when something resolves nicely, but instead of resolving nicely it just has a cool like symbol accent that lets you then pick out / memorize the pattern of the time offset in the guitar part.....resolving groovily instead of nicely maybe?
Been a Meshuggah fan for almost 30 years now... Love your reactions, always want to reccomend songs but, hey just discover them yourself.
Knew you'd get around to this eventually! First time I heard Bleed back in 2009 it blew the top of my head clean off - I could not believe my ears. At the time I'd been taking a break from extreme metal for a while [except for doom, which is in my blood], but hearing this very track reignited so much for me - old and new.

Meshuggah has atmospheric melodies
Amazing reactions, really fun to see someone geek out to meshuggah! Polyrhythmics require active listening. There's multiple choices on "where you find yourself on the beat". Meshuggah is king on this stuff, and tool does quite well with it too. If in doubt, with meshuggah you can usually find a snare to headbang too. :)
You described the perfect way to enjoy meshuggah, listening to it repeatedly, and getting to know the rythm. And once you get it locked in it energizes you like nothing else!
"Wall of Noise" is like a high compliment to a metal band lol, love this track and your reaction!
Hell yeah. Meshuggah is probably the most influential metal band of the last 30 years. My personal favorites are Rational Gaze and Combustion. Both are different to the ones you have reacted too. Rational Gaze is more groovy, and combustion is more upbeat and has much more melody.
Pantera, At the Gates, Death, Slipknot all way more influential in that period of time
@daviddorantes4292 slipknot did not exist. Pantera maybe, At the gates was influential for years, but melodeath isn't really as big as it used to be. I'd argue that more bands sound like they are trying to be meshuggah, with a touch of Pantera.
Meshuggah is awesome, really heavy and cerebral stuff every single time, super groovy riffs, and Thomas Haake is an absolute beast of a drummer
it's really easy to get lost in their grooves, especially because often each instrument does its own thing rhythmically
you might've seen some by now, but there's really good videos explaining the insane rhythm fuckery in some of their tracks
once you learn how it ticks, you only gain more appreciation for the band and the music :)

Great reaction, this is a good showing of Meshuggah's older style. I was hoping Demiurge made the cut but maybe in the future!
Some other cool bands that would be great for this channel could be Converge (anything off All we Love or Axe to Fall) or Igorrr (Savage Sinusoid or Spirituality and Distortion) would be incredible, both of these bands are garanteed to get you hyped up.

this was so awesome and new for the year that it came out
At 46 years old, my musical taste gets more and more heavy while many of my friends are going the other direction. 15 years ago, the heaviest band I listened to consistently was Fear Factory and would never have considered listening to harsher vocals. Now, over the past year, I have gotten into bands like Cattle Decapitation, Fit for an Autopsy, and Lorna Shore. You should definitely check out A Photic Doom or Scourge of the Offspring by Cattle Decapitation.
Also, check out a more prog metal band called Between the Buried and Me. Extremophile Elite and Ants of the Sky are some good tracks.
Check out Allegaeon and Abigail Williams.
Remember when Meshuggah released their album as this style of this music back in the 90's. It was a revolution in the metal world.
Before all this chaos Meshuggah was more of a thrash band.
Once they hit that groove, there's nothing else like it!
