My guess is Kerry was unhappy somehow, perhaps Tom a bit but less so. But between them for reason of lack of sufficient maturity/respect etc. not raising whatever the issue was. Withholding pay becomes a way to create a situation, as soon as that situation comes to a head he's gone. That way he's pushed out without Kerry ever having to actually have a conversation about whatever it was that was bothering him in the first place. DC
