It literally probably was a couple of extra bucks. In the early 1980s my late Mom once did what Mrs. J. was doing here and just got $20.00 for her efforts for a looong day: polls were open 7am to 8pm plus some totalling work.
@@alexisdiva9 Oh, I believe you. Back in those days, it didn't pay much. $20 in the early 80's would be around $65 today. I don't know about other states or counties, but I know in MY county in my state it pays $300. But it's a LONG day. 5 A.M. to 8 P.M.
What I can't figure out is why Mrs. J would want to work the polls for so little money when George owned the cleaning store? That was and still IS a good business.
@@retroguy9494 I think Mrs. J was working for so little money because like many poll workers she believed in the election process and wanted to help insure it continued. The election process, in spite of not being 100% perfect is still pretty good.

When my mother and I voted a while ago, even though we were sure we were voting for the same person, we didn't tell each other who we voted for. That was many years ago, when there was integrity in voting AND in voting MACHINES!!!!😂
There are still voting machines in my county. It's just that instead of mechanical, they are now computerized.
My first vote was in 1980, and I never discussed who I voted for. My folks taught me that, but how the times have changed.
My first vote was in 1972. I only guess that my parents both voted for Eisenhower. From what Dad yelled at the TV and the way Mom said nothing, I think Dad voted for Nixon in 1960 and Mom votes for Kennedy. I think they very seldom voted for the same presidential candidate after that.
And, none of us kids discussed politics or voting at home.
I always vote, it is a privilege and if you don't vote you need to keep your comments to yourself.
But this year the Democrats will find away to keep Trump off the ballot, So it will be a one way election.

And up until about 3 years ago, I voted in every single election. Even little local ones like school board where hardly anyone came out.

In Canada, if you are not on the voters list but want to vote, you can show them your drivers license with a current utility bill that has your address on.
Well, here in the United States, the rules for voter registration vary by state. There are SOME states which allow you to register the day of the election by providing proper ID and proof of residency like you guys in Canada. Now in New York where Archie lived, there is no such provision. You have to register at least 10 days prior to an election or you cannot vote.
In MY state, you have to register 21 days before or you cannot vote.
In California, every registered voter receives a mail in ballot that can also be dropped at ballot boxes in public buildings through the end of in person voting on election day. On election day, persons who are not registered can, with proper ID, fill out a provisional ballot that will then be vetted for eligibility and counted if found to be submitted by a qualified person.
When do you get unregistered to vote? If he voted from there before he should still be on the list. You don't have to reregister every time.
It varies by state.
Since people aren't required to deregister themselves when they move, the state needs some way to determine if a voter's registration is still valid. One way is to assume that if the voter hasn't voted in 10 years, they should be deregistered. This is not currently the process in NY (though it may have been during the filming of this episode).

Archie criticizes who Mike and Gloria are voting for, even though he’s not voting at all, and hasn’t since 1960. Claire packer calls him a meathead so he makes it his mission to make sure that she doesn’t get any votes at all. He thinks his vote cancels out Mike, Gloria, and Edith’s votes, when in reality, his vote doesn’t affect theirs at all. So from the bunker household, packer gets three, while Lundy only gets one. As it turns out, from the bunker household, Lundy is the one who gets zilch, since Archie hasn’t registered to vote in eleven years. Archie is such a hypocrite. All of this proves it.
Sometimes in the end, Archie gets his comeuppance. This is an example. I wonder how crazy it would’ve been if they could’ve done an episode about abortion.

As ridiculous as I find the American "must first register to vote" system, if Archie has indeed not taken the slightest interest in voting for 11 years (this episode is from 1971), he really doesn't get a say in how the country or city is run.... 😂😂

@@damon1957ful In Denmark, for example, they send out a voting card in the mail to everyone eligible to vote. You bring the card with you to the polling station and present it, cast your vote, and then sod off back home. Easy-peasy. Registering to vote is basically the hassle of making sure you appear on _one_ list so you're sure you appear on a _second_ list as well on voting day. But I guess it's _one_ way to keep the bureaucrats busy. 🙄😂
