Prison inmates form a football team to challenge the prison guards.
The old man on the team is Burt Reynolds. He played Paul Crewe in the original.

The guy at the golf course, whose wife Crewe slept with, is Ed Lauter. He played Capt Knaurer in the original.
And Burt Reynolds really took that hit during the game. They said they had a stunt double for him and he said he still had one good run left in him. Brian Bosworth that hit him was honored to hit him. He said “Who else can say they were ran over by Burt Reynolds”. Reynolds didn’t get hurt on the play but had to be helped off. They weren’t acting when they were carrying him to the sideline. He really needed the help.

Fun fact to allow nelly to run in those run down shoes and not have him possibly hurt himself is simple movie magic. They just cut out the top and slipped it over some kleets and bam.

This movie has a top tier soundtrack
To this day, I’m still impressed by Adam Sandler’s commitment to this role. At the beginning of the movie, he’s his usual pot-bellied, out-of-shape, self. By the time he starts getting the team together, he’s in shape and looking more like a football player. He also learned how to play football well enough to be convincing onscreen.

Example: The guard they give estrogen to, is Kevin Nash, an ex-wrestler AND football player. Nelly indeed played football in school, according to people from his hometown/highschool, he was talented in both football and baseball.

He played in detroit I believe. My dad played him in high school. I think he went on to play in college basketball..maybe?? Idk for sure about that last part without searching quickly

This movie is a remake of the original longest yard. Also the coach was the quarterback that adam sandler played in the original movie. In this movie, they brought him back to play the coach this time.
Funny you mention Jason Statham (the guy who plays Shaw) - he was in a remake of the original Longest Yard (a UK film called Mean Machine that came out 4 years before this one) that came out before this one. He even played the particularly violent maximum-security inmate.

A number of wrestlers were former football players at some point. Dwayne Johnson played at Miami in the late 80s. Goldberg was a LB at the University of Georgia.
There is a british version of this but with soccer. MEAN MACHINE. Shaw, (Statham) is actually the guy locked up in solitary for being the crazy one and ends up being the goalie against the guards. Great movie, same plot. Just big name british actors and soccer.
If you're onto sports movies with amazing stories, you're not going to regret reacting to "Warrior" (2011) with Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte. It's about MMA fighting with an incredible story and acton/fight scenes. Severely underrated, but one of my favorite films ever!
